Snowstorm slows drivers on I-10 in West Texas

- A large winter weather system was making roadways treacherous in West Texas on New Year's Eve. These scenes were captured in Pecos County near Iraan, Texas, on Thursday morning, Dec. 31, 2020.
Some of my family was in that stuck on I-10 over 8hrs.Leaving Arizona. Most parts of Texas do not get that amount of snow. Most times no GPS. Thank God we were able to get them a room in Fort Stockton, once they started moving. I'm grateful they made it back to Killeen. Thank you God for watching over my family.
2020 was like, "ill just leave them a "nice parting gift".... lol
Man I'm not a real religious man but I have read the bible and the shit they said at the end of times I see happening

This is west Texas about half way between San Antonio and El Paso. The elevation is around 3000 ft. above sea level and a desert climate. This area of Texas sees very cold air during the Winter but it doesn't last long. It usually warm back up in a few days. But it is not unusual to see snow and ice in this area, but heavy snow is pretty uncommon because it is a desert climate (very little precipitation). Texas is a huge state and east Texas is nothing like west Texas and south Texas is nothing like the Texas Panhandle. The Texas Panhandle is famous for white out Blizzards in the Winter, but this snow is further south (south of the Midland Odessa area).
Live northwest of Fort Davis, far west Texas north of Alpine...in 2011 La Nina super cold early February single-digits three straight days and many lost their water, pipes, plumbing, etc. 2021 could be another year like that. Looks like between Ozona and Ft. Stockton, and more videos on this: ruclips.net/video/mdEpQtQ6OZ0/видео.html
Probably like 3 people actually live there it’s more of a truck route
Yeah but it’s cool 😎
Unusual for 1-10 getting that much snow.
Tailgating in snow, brilliant
They are probably going 5 MPH... Texas does not lay salt, and as you noted, don't have a fleet of snow plows either in almost all of their highway districts...
I have driven in 40 states and that route the last 4 winters, tailgating is bad driving at any speed, especially in snow
My thoughts exactly I got stuck in the storm driving from Chicago to Des Moines iowa a couple days ago on i80 we kept following distance almost 50 yards apart it's just common sense
Even more brilliant at 45 mph🙄
@Ron Clark Texas does use salt as a pre treatment in the form of brine and a granular during the even. There are several districts that do have snow plows.
they had 2 days warning of this storm. I would have done my best to stay home because of that storm.
I would have stayed home and kept cozy by the fireplace and played board games with the kids.
This is why snow is so terrifying down south: lack of proper equipment to deal with it.
Nor will the states fund the proper equipment. Out of 15 Texas highway districts only one has a fleet of snow plows in the panhandle around Amarillo to keep I-40 open... Been that way for decades and will be that way forever...
Not really needed. See Ron's explanation above.
True and 3 vehicles at once and one doing d work.
terrifying? someone's got a case of the 2020's, drama much?
@Ron Clark so there are 25 TxDOT districts not 15. There are snow plows in more than one district. So not sure where you get your information but it certainly isn't from this decade nor century. I am willing to bet that if the state did fund more snow fighting equipment you would be the first to complain that it was a waste of money........
I don't need 4WD.....I got Fred.......Push Fred, push!!!!!!
I was laughing at this comment when it came on!!! 🤣🤣🤣
I’m still lmaooooo!!
😂😂😂
I feel sorry for the dude in the grader he is probably like why don’t we have a damn plow I hate my job
yep they are not warm ether
Out of 15 Texas highway districts, only one has a fleet of snow plows. In the panhandle near Amarillo to keep I-40 clear... This ice and snow will melt away in a day or two... Best to hold up in a roadside motel or hotel... Even for a truck driver, you will drive all day to maybe go 50 miles. Something you can do easily in less than a hour after the road clears... While Texas does get winter weather, in most of Texas it is for a few days, not a few weeks or like in Canada a few months...
@@ronclark9724 yeah it’s dumb better to have it and need it then to need it and not have it. As much as taxes are
@@everythangtexas They did pretreat the roads and thru the storm
@ Ron Clark Wrong again there are 25 TxDOT districts in Texas. And more than one has snow plows.
Wow! They brought out "THE" snow plow..
Yes, I understand there is only ONE snowplow to cover all of South Texas. So, the slightest accumulation of snow = SNOW DAY!
This is a grader acting as a snow plow. Out of 15 Texas highway districts, only one has a fleet of snow plows prepared for ice and snow. The panhandle area around Amarillo along I-40. While Texas does get snow and ice, usually it melts away in a day or two. Nor does Texas lay salt on their highways, just sand. I have seen RUclips videos of Canada laying so much salt on their highways, their gray asphalt is white. And most auto parts stores in Texas believe it or not do NOT sell chains. It is simply wiser and cheaper just to spend a day or two at a roadside motel or hotel in Texas and wait for the roads to clear. Why spend all day driving at 5 MPH, if that, to go 50 miles when you can do that easily in less than a hour after the road clears.
There needs to be like at least 4 of those bad boys. 2 on each roadside
@@pcharm3711 they probably would if they could but having only one makeshift plow makes it hard to put four on the road.
Lmao
I lived in that area years ago, always dry a a bone.
Unbelievable!!!!
It has been snowing out in far west Texas for the past 11 years now!! While the globe supposedly warms up Texas is cooling down!! Until summer anyway!! Still hot af most of the time. I’m not complaining about the beautiful 2-4 ft of snow I have right now.
The same south west needs it
Meanwhile,....in Southern Ontario the rain has melted our snow for the third time. It’s all green again.
Must be nice, here in Illinois we still have 7in easily on the ground
Crazy weather.
the thick sticky stuff. not even 4x4 gets along very well. Stay heavy in the truck bed.I live in maine. I have been in singular snowfalls that make the truck look like a matchbox playing around the large snow piles.
Are there snow like this every year too or just one for couple year in the state of texas
Slowing people DOWN is a GOOD THING! Why so many die. People in too big of a hurry!

They might want to go snow boatin.
There's a huge difference between riding on Ice vs snow
There is no such thing as bad roads or bad driving conditions. But there is no shortage of Bad Drivers who drive too fast or who follow too closely.
The Nut behind the wheel causes accident, not the roads.
STAY SAFE DOWN THERE. FROM CANADA.
Lol
I live in Houston but Thanks
Why do they plow at 2 mph?
I live in the northeastern part of the country all my life and I'm no stranger to snow and lots of it and it's very apparent that these people have no idea how to drive in it. Got a chuckle of the guy pushing the truck and the driver keeps spinning his wheels forward and I would bet 20 minutes later they are still doing that same thing.
The moral of the story is.... I need to move to west Texas.
Good winter camping weather wish I still lived there!!
Other states would have plows doing 50 mph and have snow flying 20 feet
Is it normal to have snow in Texas.
Thay don't have snow plows
@Rocket Man This is west Texas and a completely different climate than Houston. There is nothing "tropical" about west Texas in the Winter. It gets extremely cold many times during the Winter and they almost always see some snow each Winter (but freezing rain is more common). It's unusual to see heavy snow, because its the desert and they see very little precipitation. Houston on the other hand gets a lot of rain and is nothing like a desert climate. It also gets pretty cold at least several times each Winter in Houston (by cold I mean lows in the 20s with highs in the 40s or so). It even snows in Houston occasionally.
Only in certain parts. I grew up in Central Texas, but have lived in West Texas. We rarely got snow in Central Texas, but it was pretty much an annual occurrence out west. The summer months out west are hot as hell, but the winter almost always brings a ton of snow.
No.
Where is this at on I-10 what town is close? When I was driving truck I got shut down a few times between Ft. Stockton and Junction, Tx. from snow storms.
I cannot believe how close people are to each other on those bad roads.
They don’t sell chains or cables down here
I remember maybe 18-20 years ago a Dallas area plow driver enviously eying my chains as I took them off on a ramp.
Wow1!! we are just getting cold rain all day in Dallas
I'm glad to see Dallas Ft.Worth areas had purchased snow plows for the first time a few years ago.You never know when you're going to need them.
Wow, add more wind and it would look a lot like Wyoming! Great filming makes you feel the scene.
They need snow plow training from the East Coast 👍🏿😁
You are not kidding there. I don't know what that big yellow piece of equipment was supposed to be doing. And then you had what appeared to be a salt truck with a plow attachment on the front but no plow. Someone needs to come to the East coast and learn how to handle snow.
Even a real snowplow would help
Got to love the pontoon boat must be going to the lake for NewYears
Grader is needed to apply downforce on blade to cut thick built up ice. Normal snowplow has floating blade.
They need an actual snow plow, instead of a road grader. :-/
I bet Ranger mountain was closed!! No way could anyone get through there!
Snow is bad, but I'd rather deal with snow than black ice.
That's racist!!!😋
Texas, oh my word. Yikes 😱
We will survive a few days for this to melt... At least our governor has kept businesses OPEN...
Drove from San Diego to San Antonio and just waited it out in El Paso on 12/31...it was still messy today 1/1 but at least it was sunny and clear skies.
I live in iowa we just had a really bad storm I drove my semi in it from Chicago to des moines your asking for a pile up if you dont decrease your following distance in this video I seen several cars following way to close on interstate also stay In the fresh snow and out of other tracks less likely to freeze watch for spray from the other cars tires if you do not see spray from other cars tires its freezing at the point its probably common sense to get off the interstate and give it time to pass and plows to hit the road
They don't know how to drive in snow here.
When it comes to snow, the TxDot motto is “GOD put it there, GOD will take it away”.
Georgia is about the same. Our snow removal plan is "Wait until the sun comes out."
In Texas we use a lot of hiway buttons. They make it easy to see the road in a rain storm, but they make plowing almost impossible.
so guy in the blue pick up...next time stick the floor mat under the tire for traction.
Keeping on the accelerator with no result was the silliest thing I've ever seen and I live in Texas.
The snow & ice isn't all that bad as long as you respect it & act like you have a little common sense. But there is always at least 1 person out there that thinks they can drive better than everybody else.
I stayed local today. I'm glad I didn't have to make any deliveries to Odessa today. I would've been right where that Toyota pickup was.
Is this earth?
Don't those pickup trucks have 4x4? They shouldn't get stuck in that tiny amount of snow.
Cement blocks put them in back of your pick up trucks will have better Traction.
or, put that guy doing the pushing in the back. He weighs more than a bunch of cement blocks.
Lol I live in Wisconsin and we don't have it this bad yet...
...it's coming!
Texas? No way unbalievable!
glad somebody is crazy enough to drive in that
Geez I got bigger equipment in my driveway....I feel sorry for the snow removal crew.
Hey, I think I'll go out for a nice long drive in this blizzard/ice storm. SMH!
🤣😂🤣♥️😂💯💯
Some have to work and don't get snow days off... In the South it is best to hold up for a few days and wait for the snow and ice to melt...
IRAAN TEXAS AT THE PECOS RIVER.....VERY SPECIAL PLACE.....BLESS MY FAIMLY!
I always thought it was IRAN like the Persian country, I only recently found out that it is a combination of the names IRA and ANN.
Nice! Wish we could get snow like that in Austin.
Haha...odd thing is, I’m in Northern Ontario Canada, our little bit of snow has been melting for a week, give it another day or two we won’t have any left...poor Mother Nature is so messed up...BUT, weather like this...we Canadians STAY HOME where it’s safe and warm, but even so, our Canadian roads are equipped with ploughs, salt and sand trucks. I used to live in Texas, one New Year’s Eve we had an ice storm and wanted to go spend New Years in Mesquite with friends (had I known there were no salt, sand or plough trucks in Texas, I would have stayed home) we ended up driving 30 minutes and only made it 2 miles out of Fort Worth, I was shocked to see how many cars drove like any normal day, cars flying everywhere off the interstates into the ditches, we hadn’t even made it to the mix masters yet when I told Steve (RIP) to turn around, as we were pulling off ramp, we saw one young girl hit the guard rails, spun around and then continued to drive, she sped up and went on her way, it was mayhem..lol...so we get home, turn on the news...the broadcaster was downtown filming the snow on the streets (oh yeah it made big news) they filmed one hotel where someone who yelled out the window, “we are from Canada touring Texas, but watching the news and all the accidents is more entertaining”, the news room cracked up laughing at that one. Common sense ppl, STAY HOME...the state of Texas or the southern states are not equipped to handle that much snow, your government needs to pull up their big boy shorts and invest in these equipments because our temps will continue to change, summers are getting hotter and places are getting tons of snow that has NEVER had snow
If they gave out small flimsy plows for free to every semi truck and every pickup owner, there would be so many people plowing 2 inches of snow in front of them as they traveled the roads would always stay clear.
Is this supposed to be bad? Live in Utah
It is bad when the highway department doesn’t own a single plow.
@@JoePJack1 Or drop a grain of salt...
That guy in the blue truck just needs to stay home!
They all need to stay home regardless of covid or not. I'm so glad I don't have to worry about work, now that I'm retired I no longer have to get out in this crap.
Washington. canada. Alaska heads up Bomb cyclone to hit very high waves of water 110 mile an hour winds and heavy heavy snow. Be ready all.
Too bad it wasn't Portland
what I think is interesting is that the photojournalist sits there and records, rather than help? That is the dilemma for a photojournalist.
A photojournalist's job is to film. Can't film and help at the same time. But all those other people just sitting there in their vehicles could have helped.
@@TheKuptis Yes that has been the ethcial dilemma for professional photojournalist for a long time. put it down and help, or get that shot.

MAYBE...JUST MAYBE.. you should check the weather reports in the winter...Just saying..:)
Man the south’s infrastructure to deal with snow is so subpar
It's not worth the money to have expensive snow plows sitting in storage and having to keep them maintained from anywhere from a year to 5 years and when we do get snow it's usually an inch or two. This snowfall and the one after it were flukes. My city saw about 18 inches which is practically unheard of. The most we ever see is usually 6 inches.
WOW !!!
Where's the "I won't need 4x4" crowd?
You wont. You will need winter tires.
It snows in texas and everyone drives in one lanes closely behind each other
It snows in Minnesota and everyone is like yay and drives in all the lanes..
Plus Minnesota lays salt on the roads, has a large fleet of snow plows, and their auto stores sell snow tires and chains... None of which happens in Texas where winter lasts a few days, not a few months... Up until today most Texans are still wearing shorts. While you will still have freezing days and nights in May, in Texas we will be sweating beads in 90 degrees heat...
Yeah, I was told that we have oil-based roads to prevent cracking from the summer heat, so yeah, the roads can be extremely slippery when they get wet, alot of hydro-planing and such too, if you are not careful.

Texas don't have snow plows
Because snow plows can plow more than snow, for instance trees that have fallen due to s storm, or brush blocking a roadway, there are more uses and being dump truck mounted they can get to more areas quicker than a trailered piece of equipment.
There are lots of things to be learned from the folks up here where it REALLY snows.

The one highway district in the panhandle has a fleet of snow plows. Not West Texas though.
@FRUYAKI Texas has fewer days of snow and ice than many northern states have months of snow and ice. This will most likely melt in a day or two...
