Hi Nick. I am the guilty party! This request was mine. I left a comment on another video that was also attributed to "someone" claiming the Brian Auger request but I didn't stop to think that the artist name alone may not trigger recognition for you. Sorry about that. I will make sure to place my name with the request in the future as I cannot sign in to the buy me a cup of coffee site. Do you have to be a creator to have an account on that site? You picked up on the groove and melody pretty quickly on guitar and that fun to watch. As I watched you play I was reminded of a previous O.E. band guitarist named Jim Mullen. I could not help thinking this is how Jim would have approached it. As others have stated Brian is just a monster on the keys and rest of the O.E. have the chops to keep up and then some. Also mentioned previously this is a cover of Wes Montgomery who was quite an innovative jazz guitarist and his original his well worth seeking out. I could hear the crackle right away but being a vinyl collector it did not bother me. I don't use Spotify but I do use Plex. If you also use Plex let me know. I may be able to help you with lossless quality songs you cannot find otherwise. Thanks for giving this song a reaction. Great job Nick!

Great pick, Cary. And appreciate the Wes Montgomery shoutout also. I think I heard it first on his Tequila LP. Fun watching Nick jam. Thanks and cheers ✨😉

Brian Auger is one of the most underrated British prog/jazz/fusion artists ever. Thank you for reacting to this.

Second Wind is fusion bliss. Saw him several years ago. Right in front of Brian's Hammond. LOUD! We loved it.

Happiness is Just Around the Bend is a great song from Brian Auger and his Oblivion Express and probably his best known tune. A 70s classic. He still performs live at small clubs with his daughter on vocals and his son on drums. He’s known as a keyboardist extraordinaire and was close to many of the British rockers from the 60s including Jimi Hendrix when he first transplanted to London.

Wow....never expected to see Brian Auger on a reaction channel! Awesome! If you want to sample his live work, try "Happiness is Just Around the Bend" from the "Live in Los Angeles" album. It's from 2015 and features vocalist Alex Ligertwood. He has played with tons of other artists in addition to his work with The Oblivion Express. Brian's son is a fantastic drummer and his daughter is a singer and both have worked with him in the latest iteration of the Oblivion Express. Glad to see you are willing to try new directions in your music journey...there are so many treasures waiting for you.

I’ve seen Brian perform at a small club here in Maryland several times, and he’s always fantastic. He stood near the exit and shook everyone’s hand as they left, thanking them for coming. Pure class

Had my first GF's father not owned the record distributorship and store, I probably would not have known about this album. This was on the rare side of records. I am reminded of Don Sebesky and Deotado. Thanks for the memories! It's been decades! Great guitar playing by you too, I must say!

I've seen Brian Auger several times on german TV, he appeared also on concerts of Doldinger's Passport as special guest. I know this song from differen other artists as Larry Coryell and Wes Montgomery, which of course have the guitar as lead instrument. This keyboard version has to me a down slowed Black Magic Woman vibe 😄 really love it, great choice 👍

Love Auger . He was asked to join Hendrix before the experience was put together ,he said no😮. He is very right hand heavy on the keys. I think second wind is one of his best albums. Great to hear him on your channel.

    Hi Nick,
Another Jam worth ocnsidering is "Don't Let It Pass By", followed by "Nobody's Fool / El Tonto De Nadie, Regresa" by Poco, or side two from their debut 1970 album Poco. I really like Poco, especially the early lineup with Jim Messina.

At last! I was going to mention Brian Auger some months ago when you commented on how much you love the Hammond sound. I too love this instrument, especially as I grew up in the 60s UK when the Hammond was king (Graham Bond, Georgie Fame, Alan Price, Steve Winwood, Gary Brooker to name a few).
You've just got to check out Brian Auger's albums, especially those with singer Julie Driscoll . As a taster, listen to Indian Rope Man with Julie. Brian kills it on the Hammond.....but then he always does! Also, check out his live performance with Julie in Munich, Germany 1969. 🎶🎶
Bumpin´ on Sunset has an almost Santana groove. Gregg Rolie of Santana, another great Hammond player.

Hi Nick, you mentioned "a longer song, wouldn't have been played on the radio back in the day", actually it was played frequently in the 80s here in Columbus Ohio on the local jazz FM station WBBY (which sadly shut down in the early 90s). I recorded it (and many other songs) off the air to create my own collection of jazz mix cassettes.

    Hi Nick,
I should like to add nice little trivia to this, (the inexhaustible vault and stuff, remember?),
I recall Brian Auger having gone under the moniker of Brian Orgler here in Germany way back then, you'll get it, but I' m going to help your English speaking viewers out:
organ reads Orgel in German, and even though the organ player translates to Organist,
Orgler can be taken as such.
The pronunciation is by adding the l very close to his actual name.
No big deal though, but anyway.
    Hi from Berlin, Germany

Fun trivia, although I'm living in Germany and know Brian Auger, I didn't know this special version of his name. In another reaction video we exchanged some names for Barbara Streisand, someone called her Streusalz, we used to say Streusand or even Streuselkuchen 😂

Love it. Sounds like a Vinyl upload. Grew up on vinyl. Some songs from the 60's and 70's, I still expect to hear a pop or tick as well as the music at certain parts from some albums that were abused.

Good passable vinyl transfer - I've gotten better at removing record noises from my vinyl recordings. Brian Auger's customized B4 Hammond has an irresistible sound. I also really like his cover of "Maiden Voyage", and there are some good covers on the Closer To It album, along with a really good vocal song, "Happiness Is Just Around The Bend".

Due to some willing promoters, aka fans, in local radio (Toronto), likely CHUM-FM, Brian Auger's Oblivion Express caught some of my attention in the early to mid-70s - no small feat at that stage of my life for a non-guitar band. Great player, still love the moniker for the ostensible coat-tailers. Love the musicality thru and thru.
Almost grabbed an acoustic too. Next time, lol.

Top Shelf at the Keys .
In the conversation for over 5 decades - from the Yardbirds to straight Jazz Fusion collaboration with the likes of Billy Cobham , Frank Gambale & Novacento .
Certainly in the conversation with such Hammond B-3/Keyboard afficianados as Keith Emerson , Jimmy Smith , Jan Hammer , George Duke , Barbara Dennerlein , Cory Henry , Rick Wakeman , Lonnie Smith , Jimmy McGriff - and perhaps the most technically brilliant Joey DeFrancesco .

Check out Brian Auger's Trinity with Julie Driscoll on vocals. He was a great rock organ player. His work with Trinity and Driscoll preceded this group and was more rock oriented (think Blood Sweat and Tears). It's worth trying to dig up the early stuff. This instrumental is good but his earlier stuff with Driscoll on vocals is superior IMHO. The problem with vinyl is that as you play it the groves wear down and the first thing you lose is the high frequency parts of the music.

  • @robertsoden5068

This is a great song but you are missing a channel on this recording. It's as if the hammond B3 is echoing off another channel instead of being out front. Do yourself and your listeners a favor and play the version from live oblivion with Alex Ligertwood on vocals. It's a much, much better experience.
