So much of this is body language and good camera editing. An audio podcast really is a loss. Screw the algorithm. You can have one fifth of your show be very popular, or you can air the whole of your show to your actual audience
Not to mention, as a non-native English speaker, I very often have to rely on the subtitles and lip movement to understand everything.
@@thinkEdem even as a native English speaker, i often need subtitles
You can't say "Screw the algorithm" to someone who's livelihood is effected by that algorithm. The only way to get away from it is to direct people to other places where algorithms play less part... which is the point of having clips that direct people offsite. Then, to suggest that Tom wont have made the x% of "his audience" calculations, but with a decade of experience and statistics that aren't pulled out of his arse, is just stupid 0-o
@@Elendrial the point that op is trying to make is that they think the format does not do as well in audio as it does in video
@@k0pstl939 And sure that's a perfectly reasonable stance to have - I enjoy it more like this too - but the way they've expressed that stance is awful and self-entitled.
So when will the full VIDEO episodes appear?
@@lateralcast what is there to gain from not doing it. Your full episode produced far more views than the highlights. Also why did you have that full epesode if you were going to arbitrarily change policy.
@@torinstorkey Because they wanted to discover what the "audience" wanted.
@@lateralcast So, should I stop re-watching episode 1 (at full length) which I've done a couple of times, just to prove that people will watch the full length???
5:08 I love how full circle this went. I learned about Steven Bridges from a previous newsletter (Nearly 2 years ago!). Been following him ever since, and now hearing you mention him again after watching his journey feels like a line from a movie at the end that a character says to cheekily reference back to the beginning.
If full episodes are bad for the algorithm, why not divide an episode into 7 videos (maybe 5 or 6 depending on how many questions there are in each episode) and post them everyday for a week? That should make the algorithm take notice.
I know mr. producer david that you are probably reading about 100 of these messages already, but please upload full videos here too🥺🥺. We need them.
I believe craps dice at casinos intentionally use dot inlays that are the same density as the "main body" and also they're cut like a very sharp cube instead of the more haphazard rounded edges on your typical dice
Potentially, you can still try to drill out the spot and inlay it with a much denser material. There are some chemicals that can help you make loaded dice that can't be detected visually.
@@lateralcast Oh absolutely, I should have specified that I was replying to the part about normal dice having "negligible imperfections" as part of looking cool, but that (un-tampered with) casino dice wouldn't even have that
@@lateralcast Also: cant you just spin the dice on an angle? it's like with eggs. If the dice is fine, it can spin freely if not, it is tilted or it wobbles around (to determine if an egg has already been cooked, spin it. if it behaves like a bayblade it has been cooked. if it wobbles it's raw)
Would love to watch the whole thing as a video!
Minecraft villagers, when I offer emeralds: 0:45
table-top RPG players use this trick to see if their dice are 'good' and random. If you flick the dice while they float it should come up with different faces.
FULL EPISODES ON RUclips PLEASE
Wish I could watch the whole eps. This isn’t as good without the video
I agree with others, and really wish the whole episodes were on youtube, but I have to say this... While planes may look like arrows, "Arrow Park" is definitely a kid's understanding of the word Airport, too.
Hahaha, i've never thought of it like that
Full episodes please tom!!
Nice to see Chekov's Gin make an appearance.
Tommy full episode 😩 please
I've seen lots of posts with reasons for why you should post the full video, including accessibility with lack of subtitles on podcasts, but one I haven't seen posted yet is the difficulty I have in discerning between some of the guest voices. It causes a lot of confusion when I can't determine if the person talking is the same person that asked the question.
How is that different to any other radio show or podcast with four participants? Think it's fair to say that the contributors on this episode sound rather different! -- David (Producer)
@@lateralcast you can only really know that if you know the voices of the people involved, by which I mean you need to have listened to those voices for hours already. Surely it's known that not all faces here are going to be known by most viewers, and listening to voices of a different accent to your own is inherently going to be a lot harder already as well. Saying it's easy is not a fair assumption to make. The point is that you aren't restricted like those radio shows, so why not take advantage of that?
@@lateralcast most other shows I listen to either have a single guest, or I am familiar with all the voices (e.g. The Technical Difficulties). Also the audio quality is not as high here which I think plays a role too
@@lateralcast The episodes are not designed for the audio audience. Unlike Technical Difficulties, the visual gags are important for the podcast as a whole.
I think loaded dice would slide instead of rolling sometimes
Can you please post the full videos
If you put your dice in a drink in Vegas, chances are security is escorting you out relatively quickly.
Instantly thought "float the dice in your drink"
Aaaay. The Practical Engineering guy. I see the colab-with-every-youtuber project is doing great!
The way you could tell is by the security people taking away the player and the croupier (person runing the game)
I just started watching but hearing the "sit back take a drink" preface the question I would instantly assume you can check dice weight by putting them in a liquid, like checking if an egg is expired. But also why are these clips being uploaded and not full episodes? Why would I watch a full episode? Either change the format to just these short videos, as in, intended to be just 5 minute chunks, or only do the episodes, it's weird getting them when they're already half way in or have some in-jokes that you need a previous clip to understand.
The videos are to give people a taste of the full show to see if they'd like to start listening to the podcast.
Bring back full episodes, these clips are clearly doing terrible.
Actually, their retention is three times better than the full episode, which (for better or worse) makes RUclips's algorithm happier.
I can't remember what movie/TV show it was, but I recall a scene where someone suspects the dice are loaded and drops them into a drink to prove it.
Pretty sure it's not necessary for the dice to float. Most plastics are a density higher than, but close to 1.
Floating down slowly in the drink is enough to make them orient heavy side down.
of note, D&D isn't a competitive game, nor is money usually at stake. casinos don't use molded dice, they use precision machined dice that tested and replaced regularly.
You can buy casino dice but they’re super expensive.
That works with weighted dice. But you can also have dice where opposite faces aren't quite parallel so one face is slightly smaller than others. That is more likely to end up on top when rolling but, to unless the dice float very high in the liquid, the smaller face is no more likely to be on top there.
I thought at one time "What if these short videos are one when the game finishes real fast" and apparently this is what happened, nice tangent there.
I have been watching most of these lately, and I have to say, it’s becoming increasingly frustrating how easy most of these are. The answers of over 90 percent are obvious and the remaining length of the videos are just frustrating. Please continue, but with actually challenging questions, and/or hire me to test out the questions ;)
I'm a little surprised that no one discussed what kind of drinks you'd need to order for the density of the drink to be high enough that the dice float.
Grady said, "very salty water."
@@kentslocum oh really? I must've missed it, what was the timestamp?
@@WryAun 03:26 Can't believe you made me rewatch the video. :) Oh, the things we do for random strangers on the internet!
The dice don't need to float -- they just need to sink slowly enough that the weighted side will rotate to the top. John Scarne covers this in his book "Scarne on Dice."
@@scottdebrestian9875 However, retrieving the dice afterward is easier if they float.
The music so *uncannily* reminds me of the 1981 BBC Hitchhiker Guide to the Galaxy theme.
Got it! Yup, weird wording with the drink was a give away.
If your drink is alcoholic, you'll have a problem because it's significantly less dense than water, so most dice will sink.
Also I don't know how the casino is going to feel about you treating their dice that way, they might think YOU'RE trying to cheat and throw you out.
The salt version also is not guarantied to work. I have a few sets of cheap resin dice that will not float no matter how much salt I put in. And that's not getting started on metal dice. And unless you are looking for air pockets, it's not very reliable either, since rolling behavior is different from floating behavior
Without watching the video I'm sure that the drink plays a part - would you drop them in your drink to see what side orientates towards the bottom?
Is that episode of that game that Rowan Ellis is talking about ever coming out on Tom Scott Plus. It Appeared In the trailer, and I am waiting for it ever since. Or was it removed from the schedule because it didn't make a good video since Rowan just won randomly. I'd love to see that video.
What bluff game was this that Tom is playing with a card counting magician?
Salt water is the best for this
But aren't casino dice translucent, so it is easy to see any weights?
Not only are they translucent, but they are cut very sharply, coming to 90 degree edges, rather than the softly curved corners and edges you probably have on your own dice. A cunning person might make dice with asymmetrically curved edges that favored falling one way over another - and for casino use, just a small shift in the odds can add up.
Part of the plot of Ocean's Thirteen involves cheating a casino with loaded dice; the crew plants one of the team in a legitimate manufacturing job at the factory where said casino procures their dice, and sabotage the production of the dice destined for that casino to give a massive advantage against the house.
Initial thoughts: put them in the drink. If the same faces always pop up on top: loaded. Even if they don't float at the surface, they would slowly turn toward the same faces as they go down.
The one you usually hear is float them in salt water.
Anybody know what Rowan Ellis and Tom are talking about at 5:57 ? Is there a specific video they made?
It's a video on Tom's Plus channel: ruclips.net/video/LN1CdJxY2_I/видео.html

Absolute Jojo energy.
"Citizens" is an interesting choice of diction. Not "Members of the public," but citizens get to roll the dice! Okay internet, discuss:
Why am I not surprised Steven Bridges got up to those shenanigans?
Now that these "highlight" videos are getting less than 4% of the views of the full episode, think it's time to throw in the towel and actually upload the podcast to RUclips?
Why would you worry about it, just bet with them and enjoy
Oh. I thought the answer was like that short scene in the beginning of “The Road to El Dorado” where a character pounds his hand on the table making the die jump and land on the same numbers every time he does it. But that method probably depends a lot on the sturdiness of the table.
This one was way too easy, don't know how they didn't figure it straight away
it’s even funnier at 2x speed 😂
I would try to spin it like a top on the longest diagonal. If one face is heavier it won't be balanced.
Yes, that's also a recognised technique: holding it lightly between your thumb and index finger, and spinning it across the largest diagonal axis.
There's a specialized device for this, that will detect variations too small to be detected without tools - but they're not conveniently laying around at every craps table.
NB: to reduce the chance of loaded dice, the dice are transparent in casinos making it harder to put a weight in them
Why don't you have the clue on the screen at all times for the contestants?
Huh, I thought this was general knowledge.
For the dice, there are dice that’s faces only show 4 5 and 6. So anyone who looks at the dice will see a 4 5 and 6 and so people will assume the person across from them see 1 2 or 3. So any other answer is you walk around the dice and look at the other side.
those arent loaded dice though - loaded specifically implies that they have additional weights loaded on one side
also the obvious answer for one of those dice is "you turn it upside down" ... because these are extremely obvious, unlike loaded dice
A more subtle variation are dice which have either 1 or 6 marked on them twice.
🚽
I knew the solution because of a TikTok where the dnd guy put his dice in a dice jail
Am I the only one who prefers the snippets to full episodes?
I have other things to do besides watching RUclips so snippets are perfect.
They can always do both. Viewers like having the choice of watching whole episodes vs clips.
I don't see why it has to be one or the other, honestly. If it's a goddamn algo problem, do two channels. Otherwise this goes into the pile with all the other audio-only stuff I'll definitely listen to one day.
If we do two channels, or however we do it, it'll split the audience we're trying to build on the audio side. Over time, perhaps once the interest in the initial episodes dies down, we might be able to release the video episodes.
@@lateralcast Imagine you were selling a product and said "Well, we'll wait until the 'NEW RELEASE, OUT NOW' promo ends before we give people the full item that they've been wanting. Seriously, who does your marketing?
@@lateralcast by that logic you should also make it Spotify (Google, Apple...) exclusive to avoid splitting the audience.
