How to fix overheating GPU (the easy way)

  • This 2080 SUPER came in with a noisy fan and overheating problem.
    It was resolved by applying new thermal paste and propping the fan little higher so the impeller blades wont hit the wires.
    I suspect the fan got worn out inside and dropped low causing it to touch the wires.

    I love how cleverly EVGA engineered the 20xx cards. You just need to unscrew the four screw to take the heatsink off and repaste it. I recently repasted my 2080 XC2 Ultra and the hot spot temperature went from 103 degrees celsius to 74! Almost 30 degrees drop and the average went from 81 degrees celsius to around 61. It also was my first gpu repaste, it was fun!

    Good thing they got that to you before those wires were worn out. Could have easily worn through the shielding/cover on the wire and have a short-circuit, it's that exact kind of dumb unlucky stuff perfect to ruin a card. I wish stuff like redoing the thermal paste was more prominent/known, a lot of people don't even know thermal paste is a thing.

    You recently motivated me to repaste my 4 year old rx 5700xt. Thank you so much! The paste was comepletely dry and even a corner was not covered by the paste. Temperatures decreased by 10°C. I was very suprised since (I think) sapphire's designs are pretty good. I'm very dissapointed that they cheaped out on thermalpaste.

    • @luvingyouu
      @luvingyouu 10 месяцев назад +1

      damn that sucks, usually sapphire has quite good pastes imo, maybe just unlucky or it slid over time causing a corner to be more exposed. Thermal paste drying is mostly fine depending on what paste is used, sometimes it’s supposed to dry for longevity reasons, slightly higher temps later down the line but should last long with no issues

      I've been in I.T for almost 20y , what you saw was expected. 4y is a long time. GPU's get verrrry hot and the paste will eventually dry out.

    MX5 actually performs a bit better than MX4 if I remember correctly, but with time it will cause issues. That's why it has been discontinued and is not advisable to buy or use it. Use MX4 or MX6 instead, MX6 performs better but the viscosity is so damn high it's harder to separate the heatsink than with MX4.

    • @harrydijkstra9936
      @harrydijkstra9936 10 месяцев назад +1

      High viscosity lasts longer on hot direct-core chips. Easy to spread pastes give good temperature results for the first weeks/months and are more suited for desktop CPU's with heatspreader.

    For GPUs & laptops, i recommend MX-6. In accordance to my own testing (very low sample - only 2 GPUs - 6600XT & 3060 ti) it is almost on par (within margin of error) with PTM7950.
    Most of the pastes recommended for CPUs (MX-4, NT-H1/H2, etc) will pump out over time.
    MX-5 should be avoided at all cost, as it is faulty product, which Arctic themselves stopped manufacturing.

    • @Alvin853
      @Alvin853 10 месяцев назад +4

      Many people don't realize that different types of thermal paste or thermal interface material in general are best depending on the situation. Desktop CPUs with an integrated heatspreader behave differently than any bare-die chips like GPUs or laptop CPUs.
      With an IHS it doesn't matter when a tiny spot isn't covered, so you want a more runny thermal compound to get the layer as thin as possible, but with bare-die chips you need to make sure every part of the surface is covered so the material needs to be more viscous. Which is why many manufacturers have started to resort to phase transition material.
      Sadly many "experts" will tell you phase transition material is dried up thermal paste and recommend to replace it, which doesn't help performance at all, it might be ever so slightly better on initial tests but will degrade very quickly.

    • @resko8758

    MX5 is a very inconsistent paste. It's formulated wrong or has suffered a manufacturing defect, so it often doesn't work properly. The same fate befell MX3 funny huh, one speaks of the Arctic odd-number curse. So both were discontinued after a short time and replaced by MX4 and MX6 respectively.

    My PC keeps shutting off randomly. I believe it is because the GPU is overheating. I know I probably need to replace the thermal paste as my GPU (It is an RX 480) is 8 years old and I don't think it has ever being repasted before. The only problem is I am to scared to take it apart. I would hate if something broke as I don't have enough money to replace it yet.

    I had an overheating Asus Dual Mini 3060Ti, 100% Fanspeed and 100°C hotspot. I disassembled it, which was hard... Some screws for the heatsink were under the backplate and some screws of the backplate were under the heatsink...yeah... I used pliers and a drill... it went fine. But after putting it back together the temps were the same. :D
    My case was the problem. For some reason the hot air didn't move away from the card, despite having a fan blowing from below past the card.
    The air from the fan probably stopped the air form exiting the heatsink, since it is turned 90° (like a blower card) compared to normal heatsinks. In an open air bench it runs normal and cool.
    I eventually sold the 3060Ti and bought a 4090FE.. the 4090 is in the same case, but it doesn't throttle even with 600W blasting through it..

    Im sorry to say but that thermal paste you using is a piece of crqp, you need to use a hight w/m.k like a value of 15 or more cause that way it will help cool netter because heat is transferred quickly to the heatsink from the GPU. Mx6 isn't good.

    🤣The first step to fix GPU overheating is to use thermal pads at least half millimeter thicker than the original ones. This way the Thermal paste on the GPU will be very thick and will not be able to transfer the heat to the cooler and we can count on temperatures probably above 90 Celsius which is perfect for the Winter. 🤣
    P.S. For those who may not know, do not use thermal pads thicker than the original ones, ever.
