There was another firmware update on August 9 2024 and FINALLY it adjusted the EQ of the transmitter mic! I compared the sound before and after in an updated video: ruclips.net/video/fuxHYBhHNAA/видео.html So now the sound quality of the Tx mic is no longer a big downside. I still stand by the other reasons I mentioned in this video as to why I think the Rode Wireless Pro is a better choice overall, but the firmware update is a nice improvement for any Mic 2 owners!
Thanks for this demonstration and appraisal. You didn't say if the sound quality of the DJI Wireless 2 improved with the Sennheiser lavalier mic. Did it improve? Was it a significant difference?
DJI sounds pretty good to me, especially in internal audio, though Rode is slightly better in audio (but much worse in usability, design, and settings). But why is there a hiss in the audio background during the indoor shooting with 2.4 GHz? Is that from the mic, the surroundings, or a problem with the settings?
I've verified the low cut filter was off during my testing, except for the sample of the low cut filter that I provided at 06:29. The sound of the built in mics is far from equal to the Rode Wireless Pro based on the units that I have.
Hi all, I just wanted to comment here that I have installed the January 31, 2024 firmware update from DJI and tested out the internal recording and the wireless bluetooth to my iPhone again and I do not hear any significant improvement or difference in the audio quality vs. the samples in this video. The built-in mic still sounds muddy to me and the bluetooth sound quality when not connected to a DJI device is still below average. Perhaps the firmware improved the stability of the wireless transmission, but didn't seem to change the sound for the better.
Regular BT uses the Hand-set profile which is the profile supported by (most) phones. The DJI Pocket and Action 4 supports the BT EDR mode (Enhanced Data Rate) which suggest more bits for the codec. Also for the DJI MIc2 the low cut filter is on by default, removing bass from the audio. Thus the MIc2 will sound much thinner than the Røde Pro.
Why would you not connect a lavalier mic to both of these, since that's what will give you the best audio quality? If you did that with both DJI and Rode, and assuming you used the same lavalier on both, the audio quality should be nearly identical, right? Other than minor differences, you'd mainly be comparing bluetooth & noise reduction vs extra recording time & data over USB. I have this nanotech black paint called Musou Black (google that) and I paint it over logos like what DJI has on the front so that issue would literally disappear. Which would you prefer assuming you were using the same lavalier or even a shotgun?
In this case, DJi will be much more expensive and the choice is much more obvious. Personally I agree with author that the sound of DJi is “moody” and I hear that in every review. Don’t get why people don’t her that. BTW, I am DJi lover for years, but not in this case.
@@alonuch1 If they're both using the same mic with 32-bit audio recording, what would account for the "moody" audio quality? I would love to hear a side-by-side test of the two with the same lavalier mic, 32-bit internal recording.
By “moody” I mean less high frequencies and the voice of speaker sounds not the same as they record in studio with professional mic. RODE sounds much much closer and similar to high quality podcast mics. It is not related to 32bit. When DJi used with high quality lavalier mic than it sounds as a RODE. Which points us to the same thing that you have to add additional 150-200$ to DJi and it makes it very expensive.
@davidlevine7164 better digital processing with better quality components. Rode is a professional audio manufacturer, and that's all they do. DJI makes great drones and cameras and I have most of them but you can't compare the sound and quality of these 2. Rode wins imo.
If you were only using these for recording videos on an iPhone for RUclips, which one would you choose? The direct-to-phone connection of the dji without a cord seems like a strong advantage. If you aren't using a phone clamp with a cold shoe mount, I guess you could connect the Rode receiver to the back of the iPhone via the MagSafe connection?
The most unbiased review I've seen regarding these kits because he purchased them with his own money. Once you've heard the difference between the Rode and the mic2 on your own system or headphones, you will want the Rode
Great vid, thanks for your thoughts. FYI and anyone interested, the bluetooth works great with the insta 360 Ace pro without the receiver or with pugged in!! And on both, you gotta get the gain stack right, those dslr preamps will crack you up otherwise. Oh and the rode video mic pro, v1, now 6 year in my kit, works great wirelessly with the transmitter connected, those 9V’s seem to preamp spot on for this setup. I boom and handhold, about 50m radius with the odd body drifting between, never a problem. But at the end of the day, are they really intended for pro use, i’m not so sure. Thanks. 👍
I sold the RØDE Wireless GO II because I dislike the on/off button. Takes some time to look for it when the muffler is attached and then it takes some time to power on/off. Then I got myself DJI Mic 2 because of the auto-record functionality, which I rely upon the most. It really helps especially when dealing with interviewees who don't know how to turn on a wireless mic. The DJI cable connector for the receiver to the camera is quite stiff! So, I got myself a soft RØDE cable to replace it 🙂
Sounds like you had the low frequency rolloff turned on with the DJI mic2. I saw another reviewer who did that by mistake, I think it's on as default? And I see that was already brought up, as someone who uses Sennheiser lavs with these wireless mics, yes I have thread conversion cables, the sound is way better with the lavs, only way to use them or even the Rodes, never use the on board mics, basically, I just use them as transmitter packs.
I actually do a test of the low cut filter in the video, and it was not turned on in any of the segments except for that one. I thoroughly reviewed the menu system and settings before recording the review.
@@bsmart446 Ok, so my comments seem to get removed when I mention the link or solution. You have any other way I can leave a message to point you in the right direction?
Probably not. I heard someone said the transmitter power up to 3.5v and these micro require more. My azden smx30 is powered by battery so it should work..in theory. Without the two battery it wouldn’t work as it requires 11v minimal.
Cool review, but I think it slightly misses the mark. For folks doing videography, reliability and ease of use should be the priority when selecting any equipment. Basically, you should be asking yourself, “what piece of gear is not going to screw me over and will get the job done every time?” These minor differences in audio characteristics are easily addressed in post production EQ, compression, limiter, etc.
Fair, but this wouldn't change my personal assessment. DJI Mic 2 has good ease of use, but so does the Rode Wireless Pro. The W Pro has been very reliable for me, and I far prefer the sound plus the other features it has that the Mic 2 does not. I personally do not like to rely on post to make a microphone sound good because it can lead to sounding over-processed very easily. I'd rather have a mic with a more natural frequency response that doesn't require as much tinkering in post. But everyone is entitled to their opinion and preferences, and that is one reason watching multiple reviews from different channels is always a good idea.
@@semiprotech Totally. Makes sense. I just always see so many of my peers buying things that ultimately screw them over because they were getting too complicated or risky with their gear selection. All in some effort to chase a subjective quality that is often splitting hairs. Honestly, these 2 products seem quite comparable to my ears, so I would tend to go with DJI, but like you said, it’s all quite subjective.
I totally agree with you. The dji mic is just a toy to sell on social media hiding its main purpose of sound quality. Hope to see updated version from rode soon
I've had both amd DJI works for me better. Smaller, the receiver screen and UI, remote control of the transmitters through the receiver and the killer feature for me: the Sony MI shoe adapter. Mind blown
From 10:43, I can definitely hear the difference in sound between the DJI Mic 1 and Mic 2. The Mic 2 sounds more natural and comfortable, but I find it difficult to distinguish between the DJI Mic 2 and the Rode Wireless Pro in terms of audio quality. After hearing them more times, perhaps I perfer the DJI Mic 2. As you mentioned, sound preferences are subjective.

This makes it more versatile and dependable in various recording situations, particularly in scenarios where immediate adjustments are necessary without the use of a smartphone.
I cancelled the Dji Mic 2 after watching this video😅 I just couldn’t convince myself to buy it considering I shoot very little outdoors and I am actually more interested in studio mics
Dji said they realized the issue and that they were fixing it. Current manufactured mics will have the fix, and that's why most will arrive in March if you order from Dji
I prefer the sound of the Rode one but being able to connect the DJI Mic 2 to the Osmo Action 4 via Bluetooth and no receiver makes it my preferred choice. I wish the rode had a similar feature.
EQ-fixable, but the Røde has clearer audio out of the box without eq, and with the 2 included lavs that give even clearer audio the Røde is more value for the money if one needs 2 mics, too bad they only sell the big pack, and don't have a 1 RX + 1 TX package option with a lav :/
The Rode blows the competition. The dji sounds cheap like those $25 wireless mic on temu, especially with the noise reduction on. Also the dji has that electronic clipping that is annoying. I would never pay that amount of money for that.
We have the mic 2 with the pocket 3 and it’s ok for that. But we sent back the Mic2 package for use with our Sony cameras , the audio was not good enough. Ordered the rode instead, much better
good review. For me having the data through put on the case is a big deal. I like the look of the DJI but the Rode does come across more useable. Also a few other reviewers has spoken about build quality issues of the DJI but that might be because they are review models they were reviewing.
That's possible, luckily I didn't notice any issues with the build quality myself. And I agree with the data transfer through the case! Love that feature of the Wireless Pro.
To my ear, the Mic 1 sounds better than the Mic 2. I returned my Mic 2 because of some intermittent static / sound artifacts that made its way into some videos. I'm sticking with the Mic 1 for now. I'm considering the Rode Wireless Pro, BUT I mostly record on my iPhone. I don't love the cables. I think a small attachment from another wireless mic can solve this problem, but it's still a bit of a hassle. I may just wait for the Wireless Pro 2 or the Mic 3. I see Rose added a Low Cut Filter, which is nice. They should add in some straight up noise canceling too via firmware update.
Neither have timecode so they are not serious contenders in the marketplace in my opinion. However, I have the Rode GO II as a last resort or used in a situations where I fear I may lose that piece of equipment. Both the Rode and DJI mic would be fine as inexpensive mics but the Rode sounds better to me.
I love the functinality of the Mic 2, however the noise cancellation and sound are not great even with the Firmware update. The Rode Wireless Pro sounds far better... however when you place a Lav on on either the sound becomes far closer. I'm sticking to the Rode even though im a DJI fanboy.
Agree 100%, I've tested after the Jan 31st firmware and don't hear an improvement either. Too bad they missed the mark on a few things because it's very convenient with the Pocket 3 and Action 4!
i tested out Dji Mic 1 compared to Dji Mic 2 both connected to my macbook using Quicktime Audio recorder Somehow .... The Mic 1 sounded cleaner and louder. Mic 2 audio was poor and low
What gets me is the audio is obviously better from the Rode... It's quite obvious. Isn't that the main point of a microphone? And I totally agree... Most are bought and paid for videos this one isn't ...good job
The DJI has more flexibility. The rode is the ugliest big square. I couldn't tell the difference. The rode may sound 5 percent better but that could be changed in post. The rode case looks terrible too. The lav Mic screwing in is not a good idea. The wire will just get ruined. Or you will wreck your transmitter. Time code is good but no jam sync.
Goingg by the Rode website, jam sync is supported "With the Wireless PRO, you are able to Jam-sync the Wireless PRO receiver (RX) with multiple cameras that do support Timecode."
Audio time code is not as good as dedicated. Look I'm an old sound engineer that used to use a neve 48 track with flying faders and parametric EQ. Back then we would either record on a Sony PCM 3348 1/2 tape with DA converter. Everything has changed from that point on. The DJI has Bluetooth and 2.4g the rode doesn't. If your miking up talent for a Major production your not using either of these mics. These are prosumer mics. The DJI system for me is better knowing that DJI is basically taking over this market. They make the ronin 4d professional drones. Professional gimbals. They bought hassleblad. Rode sounds good but most people can't tell. You Tube compression on top of that. I guarantee Rode will redesign that ugly box shape. DJI mic 2 has more flexibility, more features, ease of use. Fast charging. And it's cheaper. Because of that every big You Tuber is using DJI. Works with a phone, action camera, pocket 3. Even competitors action cameras. Can rode do that. No. I see You Tubers with 1 million subscribers using DJI and don't use rode anymore. They are even using hollyland lark m2. That should tell you they don't want the big ugly box. Nuff said.
Man the DJI 2 sounds worse than the DJI 1 mic. It sounds like an AI generated person to me. The Rode sounds pretty robust and deep way better in my opinion.
Those Rhode Lavs suck and you know it. Shure or Sennheiser is cheaper and better. Trust your ears. It all comes down to this question: Do you want to use Lav? Then the system does not matter. Do you want to use build-in? Go Rhode.
@@skankytrick not at all. I wanted to buy the DJI system originally since I have a few of their products - but all these other DJI reviews are sponsored so obviously they have to be in favour of DJI, although the rode is clearly a better system in terms of audio quality and price point with the 2 lav mics.
@@sajidhowlader6620Honestly ! After few years having the Rode wireless Go 2 I just love the DJI Mic 2. It's just way easier to use. That's all. Sound quality is subjective and if you care about good sound you use Senken lav mic with a more professional Audio transmitter. Let's be honest, this is for run and gun filmmakers. And the touch screen itself is just a killer. The DJI is just WAY more practical yo use. At the end of the day, that's what I'm going for.
I love the unbiased opinion. The rode right now is the clear winner, it sounds better and for me that is what I want from my microphone, that is the whole point of having a mic, how well can capture the audio. I would love to see an audio test of the dji lav mic because I love what they did with design. Thanks for the awesome review!

Well, a guy who mostly records on his iPhone one has to call a Pro. Obviously. Haha
Rode Wirless Pro does have timecode
I love the functinality of the Mic 2, however the noise cancellation and sound are not great even with the Firmware update. The Rode Wireless Pro sounds far better... however when you place a Lav on on either the sound becomes far closer. I'm sticking to the Rode even though im a DJI fanboy.
Agree 100%, I've tested after the Jan 31st firmware and don't hear an improvement either. Too bad they missed the mark on a few things because it's very convenient with the Pocket 3 and Action 4!
i tested out Dji Mic 1 compared to Dji Mic 2 both connected to my macbook using Quicktime Audio recorder
Somehow ....
Interesting opinion. Weird, but all professional bodypack recorders are built to screw the mic onto it.
Goingg by the Rode website, jam sync is supported "With the Wireless PRO, you are able to Jam-sync the Wireless PRO receiver (RX) with multiple cameras that do support Timecode."
What's more important for a microphone? Looks or audio quality!
DJI just fixed the audio with a firmware update
Nuff said.
Rode 💯
Man the DJI 2 sounds worse than the DJI 1 mic. It sounds like an AI generated person to me. The Rode sounds pretty robust and deep way better in my opinion.
Rode wireless pro sounded best to my ear. Great review.
Those Rhode Lavs suck and you know it. Shure or Sennheiser is cheaper and better. Trust your ears. It all comes down to this question: Do you want to use Lav? Then the system does not matter. Do you want to use build-in? Go Rhode.
2 Cent black tape makes the logo go away and looks Pro. It is called creativity and helps your self-actualisation, too.
DJI released the firmware yesterday. Much better
I'll be installing the new firmware this weekend to test it out!
Good to see an unbiased review. It's annoying seeing biased ones by all these sponsored DJI videos
You mean you just wanted to find someone who trashes DJI.
I didn’t buy the DJI because it didn’t have timecode.
I love the unbiased opinion. The rode right now is the clear winner, it sounds better and for me that is what I want from my microphone, that is the whole point of having a mic, how well can capture the audio. And you get 2 lav mics, and you get more internal recording time. Great review, it really helped me a lot to make my choice. I would love to see an audio test of the dji lav mic because I love what they did with design. Thanks for the awesome review!
Have you ever in your life made a recording longer than 14 hours?
Great review.. I went withe the Rode Wireless Pro, it was an easy win on sound quality alone and value. If I want a gimbal or drone I will look for Dji. Rather use Rode with Pocket 3.
I agree that the Rode does sound better. I have listened to other side by side recordings and felt the same. I have bought so many Rode mics for different purposes and love their sond across the board
