Hi Mr Salles, I just wanted to say how grateful I am for your channel. Your deep analysis of texts & the exam, and essay skills have all been so so helpful in my studies, and especially in lockdown; more importantly, they’ve reignited my passion for English.
I’m trying to think deeply about texts. I assume that it’s a matter of practice, but do you have any tips for analysing so deeply (as you do)?
Read what other teachers/critics have said. It isn't being clever! But then test out these ideas based on 'what if'. Asking yourself what the logical consequence of one interpretation is and take it further. Or asking, what if the opposite is true? These form a kind of a game, by which you uncover your own evidence and belief.
The other thing I like to do is look for two things - patterns and gaps. There are so many of these in every text you study once you start to look for them.

Hi, I’m so sorry for the late reply!
In Act 1, scene 7, Lady Macbeth’s shocking image of smashing ‘the brains [of her baby] out’ appeals to Macbeth’s blood-lust, because she recognised that there is a real chance that the Macbeths will feel guilty after the regicide. Therefore, Lady Macbeth tries to prevent this by appealing and pleasing his blood-lust, and to a further extension perhaps the warrior side of Macbeth, which is being rewarded by this martial society.
This image is also full of rage, which strongly suggests that the Macbeths are both full of rage, at the passing of their child. Perhaps Lady Macbeth has taken the initiative to project their grief & anger into something that will replace that loss: becoming king and queen.
(Act 2, scene 1)
In general, Macbeth’s dagger soliloquy shows that his hallucination is an unconscious manifestation of his guilt (which is already present) -- and his fearful state. It foreshadows the Macbeths guilt and unhappy reign.
It’s also worth noting that Macbeth is the complete opposite in this scene, than in Act 1, scene 2. We also see this with Lady Macbeth, in Act 1, scene 5 she’s been spurred to (convince Macbeth to) kill King Duncan. But in Act 5, scene 1, the audience learns that she’s been experiencing nightmares regarding the regicide, and she feels incredibly guilty which leads her to commit suicide.
I’ve also found another helpful techniques.
Trying to be as specific as you can about something (when annotating).
Eg, Despite being late, a person helps someone who has fallen.
‘Nice’ becomes ‘going out of their way to help someone’, which then forms ‘cares more about (experiencing) life, and people, rather than strict routine’
I also like to this method with poetry, to find the poet’s purpose.

Hey sir! I'm loving your videos but have a question.
I understand that this kind of analysis is top level stuff because you are interpreting different meanings and undermining other perspectives, etc. But say the Q is "How is ambition presented in Macbeth?" How should I answer that with these ideas?
In class we are taught basic quotations which I feel as if every other kid will know and use to answer such a Q. "Stars hide your fires".
I don't really know how I can link quality analysis that undermines a question... if that makes sense? If you're suggesting that there is a lack of "ambition" or "manipulation" of a certain character (whatever deep, alternate analysis), won't that just get you a low mark since you are not arguing why a character is ambitious or manipulative?

Hi sir, I've just been reading your revision guide- '100% in AQA English Language', and in the paper 1 question 2 section, you have said that I should write about the contrast or juxtaposition. But would that not make my answer more about structure (like Q3) and cause me to lose marks?

Thanks for buying my guide. Your question is a very good one, but makes me very sad, because it is typical of what English teachers are being forced to do.
So, yes, contrast can be seen as just a structural technique. But it is created through language. So a character witnessing a pile up on the motorway might react in an unfeeling manner, saying "Hey ho." This contrast is produced by that use of casual language. So, contrast is also a language feature.
The exam mark scheme says, " Analyses the effects of the writer’s choices of language", so you will write about the effect of this contrast.
The examiner also doesn't really care, because you are also encouraged to write about sentence structures which is nobody's idea of a language feature.
This led to students writing a lot of gibberish, so now you don't have to write about sentence structures - the examiners are at least trying to be on your side, sort of!

at school were being taught the 'lady macbeth is manipulative, controlling and not seen as a usual typical jacobean woman' on this video theres a mix between that and the 'macbeth is far more responsible for his actions than it seems'. who do i listen to my teacher or these videos??

Yes, that's right. Don't do it all at once, but in stages, so you will remember more.

Wonder if the letter is not written by Macbeth, but was pre arranged by the witches as a further manipulation?
This wouldn’t really fit the logic of the play.
Imagine Macbeth arriving home to find that his wife already knew everything the witches had told him. His shock and surprise would be evident in his Conversation with her as soon as she starts talking about the weird sisters promises.
@@MrSallesTeachesEnglish I think clever manipulation would not involve telling everything, but telling shades of that message to affect their desired outcome
