Boy you ain't kidding. This is my 3rd season and have only got 2 or 3 possums and same with coons in that time. This year something is digging my sets out. Just makes you pay attention to details.
Thanks for this confidence boost. I’m a new trapper- set my first trap December 2, 2022. To date I have 64 trap-days under my belt. I’ve have caught 0 animals, but have learned a TON. Sooner or later I will walk up on a tight chain! Edit: I always remind my youngins, success is not killing or catching. Success is learning.
I have been at this game of Fur Chasing for over 55 years and you don't need to justify any excuse for not catching something within this clip. It is refreshing to see someone who is working hard and showing the process. Harvesting wildlife has more science in it than people think and "the Tube" has young folks believing that instant results are what life is about. Its like a 1000 coon season in Iowa - lots of Hard Work,,,,,,,,,, but,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, the tools and techniques, conditions, animal density and regulations have all been laid out though the years (by others) so this goal can be achieved. Lets remember who the audience is as my wife (the school teacher) would say so from this "old side of the fence" I am glad you made this. ............................ the mike
I Love to see the video where you have footage of the beginning plan, game footage of the during and then the follow up all in the same video, like a story being told. That was cool.
Man I sure appreciate you doing this video, I’m fairly new to trapping, I played around with it back when I was in my teens. Decided to give it a go again this year drew 6 cat tags and I’ll tell you what it’s been humbling, the highs and lows that come with trapping is crazy. Been able to get two great cats so far, Love the idea of the camera and I agree it can be a great learning tool, love my new hoody I got from you, very warm. Thanks again always learn a lot from what you share. Keep up the good work
Appreciate the way you keep your videos real Stu. All the advise you give is spot on. Keep up the great work! I bought a hoodie and some T-shirts to try and help show my support.
this could be the best video i have watched of yours! its pure honesty. i have 2 properties set right now and 2 hours a night/day checking and nothing. Keep the truth rolling!!! love them.
I watched about every video you put out last year because I was drawn for a bobcat tag. Hadn’t trapped since the late 90’s and ever caught anything in a foothold. I put out my traps the first day of first season. I had a few smart fox walk by and inspect my duke 550 and 650’s. I had my traps to close to my bait holes. About 10 days before close we had snow. I dug out the crusty frozen ice slop build up over my traps making a fresh looking dig. I caught my first bobcat the next day with a double front pad catch!!!!! I skinned it with help from you videos. Just got the hide back a few days ago from the tannery. I left the feet in on. It looks great! Thanks for the help. Hopefully I get drawn again next year for a cat! I have a log run just like the one you set up on. Shot a grey fox off if bowhunting last year and a coyote during deer gun season. I have quite a few coyotes on camera that still run on it. I might have to give it a try. I have frozen ground and snow so I'll have to load it up with peat and some salt if needed. The bobcat that walked by is about what the fox did with me. That's why I placed my dukes farther back from the hole. I would have loved to put in for your contest but only have a 3 coon cuffs, 4 550 os, and 2 650 os. I also didn't get drawn for a bobcat this past season which is what I got re started in trapping for. I'll have to restock up on some coon cuffs. It took 2 months to catch my bobcat BTW. We have to check traps here every day. I bet I could have bought a couple of cameras and it would have been cheaper than fuel with the 35 min one way drove each day to check. I have to save up for cameras as well.
I just did some research on those cameras they look awesome but the only bad part is they show a red flash that would scare every animal away in my Woods. Think I'll wait tomsee till next year if they come out with no flash technology. My deer and coyotes freak out now with the low glow on my reconex 550 and bushnell. They would run to the next county with the bright red light on the trail cam your using. I looked at the reveal xb no glo. Imo a better option but it has a slower Trigger speed and no 100 free pics.
You have some really good videos and I have learned a bunch in just a couple of weeks. Keep them coming. I also like the fact that you are realistic about the % of catches vs sets.
Great video , I enjoy your honest approach to trapping. I trapped years ago, for 5 years, best time of my life. Success is the cherry on top. The joy of trapping is the total experience. Thank you
Very nice and encouraging video. I went through that empty trap frustration when I was in high school, so I'm already prepared now that I'm 76 and just gathering supplies and information to get back into the game. Also, just so you know and can make the proper adjustments, your snaresrus link doesn't go where you intended it to anymore.
Put out 10 sets, catch 2 critters, then 20% of your sets had a 100% success rate. Not catching doesn’t mean failure. So many videos you say “well, 4th night checking and I haven’t caught ANYTHING so far, let’s go see…” and BOOM, 80% success with 2-4 different species. Sometimes they’re moving, sometimes they’re hunkered down. Getting out there and trying is success. 👍🏻
Awesome video Stu and you keep it real! I experience a lot of the same conditions as you up here in Michigan and your info is very helpful! I’ll be checking out your fur handling kit too as I started into tanning some critters for the wall !
I just came across this video after watching more of the recent ones. It was a good video and it's cool hearing that you are from Corrupt Illinois as well.
I know this is older video but Thanks For Sharing This Showing the Good Misses and How Trapping Really is You Make Good Simple Sets and They worked The Truth ✌️
Thank you for this when I first started I questioned myself and had so much self doubt thinking that if a coyote or cat walk by a set. In my mind I thought if it came by it was supposed to be caught and that was clearly not the case. I’m in year 6 of trapping and continue to learn.
Thank you man right now I'm tryina catch a REALLY smart fox and I've been trying for about 2-3 weeks now and I still believe I can catch him though and you just doubled my confidence thank you a lot man
Great video!! Your correct YT is full of nothing but success, glad you showed reality. No need to worry about your credentials!!! I’m aspiring to trap some day , but a very avid archer and cameraman, my experience with those preadators in my area western PA is they are on a 5-7 day cruise cycle on the same trails. That’s what my cameras tell me, so when I saw you setting for one night I would have been shocked to see if you actually did get one not impossible but .. Love your content I learn alot!!!! If you ever make it to PA I got a ton and I mean a ton that need to go!! of fur for you to trap and you won’t have to sleep in the trailer, but it is cool!!! Tight chains!!!
I’m from Central IL and just tinkering with this trapping. Thanks for the encouragement. Don’t ever plan on hitting hard, but it’s good to know I’m not the only one who fails. Learning! What part of IL are you from?
I started trapping about the same time you did, and have watched a lot of your videos. Your experience and mine are similar. Sometimes you win sometimes they win you just have to keep at it.
I've noticed they usually won't work a set the way they naturally would if they see the unnatural "box with a red light" on the tree. They seem to be calm until they notice the camera then they freak out and take off. Keeping the camera high up and pointing down at a 45° angle helps.
This year due to life getting in the way...I have ran just 4 MB-550s and been fortunate enough to have caught 3 coyotes in about 10 or so days....I had a 30 year hiatis from trapping...glad to be back....at least part time. Im in northern Illinois
I started trapping this year after watching coyotes chasing deer while on my stand one morning, I've been trapping since the beginning of Kentucky's trapping season this year. I kept having coons dig my traps at first so I got some coon cuffs and caught 4 or 5 good coons. That was almost a month ago and I have yet to catch anything worth catching. I've got coyotes and even the occasional red fox on trail cams walking by my sets and don't even act like they notice anything. I have had a few snapped traps in the trap bed but it's not been something that's happened often.
That is a great video it took me 3 months walking a mile every morning before I got my first red fox now its alot easier and my next target is a coyote.Persistence and patience are both needed when trapping.
Got back into trapping last year, haven't trapped since I was a kid. The very first check I had a coyote foot print on the loose jaw of the trap, ended up not catching anything but learned from the experience.
It’s a tough game 2nd year for me one dog this year weather didn’t help here in Maine 70 degrees rain tough season I gave up after two weeks last year I caught 2 dogs and a bobcat the first week set on sign all the time but dogs seem to cycle through 8 to 10 days
That's cool,I have put in complete sets without the trap a week or so before season just to watch the camera fotage, and yes it doesn't work every time, good job..
15:45 My stakes are not holding, soft meadow soil in Texas. And they (coyotes) are pulling cables loose from trees, very frustrated! Lost 3 traps already? Help?
Check those bearings in your trailer could be loose and not greased right! You would be surprised how many new trailers have loose and not greased enough bearings! Love your channel! Be safe out there brother!!!
I’ve noticed in the trap house pod cast and in a couple recent videos you talk about coyotes in the timber… could you do a video of how you would set for yotes in timber? I have a lot in thicker woods. Thanks Stu and keep it up
Thanks for telling it the way it is I've been there you just don't catch fur every day good video. I would to see your staking sistem on your dirt holes
I will need to use trail camera's as I just do not know if there are coyotes in the area that I set. Caught three coyotes in six day out of 12 traps. The farmer says he has them on camera but then he drove over my set so I pulled them.
We have snow for 7 months every year and it doesn't lie or sugar coat anything for you, every refusal and avoidance is easy to see. It helps with the learning curve, but it's downright maddening sometimes...many times I've come to a set with a paw print on the still set pan 🤦🏻♂️
Thanks for the videos! Hope it helps with the tires.
wow you're awesome.
Very much appreciated. Thanks so much for your support of the channel. Tight chains and happy new year eh😁
People need to realize there is a steep learning curve with trapping. Having guys like you posting your videos helps all of us. Thanks so much.

This is why you have one of the best trapping channels. Good video!
Agreed.
He’s the best 🙌🏻
I can definitely relate, had a cat walk by 4 sets after a snow this year. Frustrating but it's all a learning experience. Keep'em coming Stu!!
Great video. Helps us new trappers to realize its not just us that has "failures" and to be patient. Thanks for posting it!!

Great video! I’m in pa and in the last week I’ve had so many things walk by my sets in the snow it’s unbelievable
Thanks!
One reason why I like to watch your videos as truthful you are
