One issue would have someone refer to the blue one as Frenzy, then the next would refer to it as Rumble. The in-universe explanation was that the two cassettes were concerned people were confusing them, so they decided to swap colors every so often. Nobody noticed when it happened; they always called Rumble Rumble and Frenzy Frenzy, regardless of colors.
I’ve had that as a Headcanon for years. Those two like to regularly swap paint jobs, so that none but them may know who is who. Though, if anyone were to truly ask me…. Rumble had the red paint job first. Very first episode he had ever been in G1, he wasn’t blue. Do they fight over who gets to be red that day? Yes. Yes they do. About as much as we fight about what colors Rumble and Frenzy are.
Plus Starscream and the other seekers do the same thing. Hence why sometimes Thundercracker's voice is coming from what looks like Starscream or Skywarp and vice versa. Heck even Ironhide, Ratchet, Bluestreak, Prowl, Bumblebee and Cliffjumper do this from time to time. Each one doing it with their respective similarly molded Transformer. Heck even Sideswipe and Sunstreaker might just engage in such tomfoolery.
Now I wish humans were able to have this sort of stuff. Ok, now that I think about it, hell naw, give me back my uniquely shaped chin and lack of nostrills.

i dont really laugh when im alone, but when i saw shockwave have a heart attack i laughed so hard my dad had to come into my room and make sure i was okay
best guess for how they change colour is either electric paintjobs like in tfa or their outer casing is made out of that colour changing plastic they use in hotwheels that changes with heat and their able to regulate their body temperature to swap on the the spot, we just can't tell they're made of plastic and not metal because of the animation style yes i thought way too hard trying to ad some semblance of logic to this joke, in memory of shockwave.

Honestly considering their whole schtick is “robots in disguise” it would make less sense that these robot would not have the ability to change color but still be able to scan new vehicles to disguise as. Now I want to see a video of this concept but with the seekers.

If rumble and frenzy are in any future transformers show I think a funny gag would be in each episode they are in they just switch names indiscriminately like rumble will be blue and episode and red the next and only soundwave can tell them apart

Whenever Megatron's not at the base the Seekers remove their nametags (Hayden forgot).
I always saw rumble as the blue one with pile drivers for hands and frenzy as the red one with drills for hands.
