For me as well. Best rendition. Mel didn't like an erstwhile moniker, "The Velvet Fog". I believe he did however come to embrace this. His voice was remarkable and scaled incredible octaves with masterful control. Still missed. We need him today.
I always considered Torme one of the most important jazz/pop singers of the past 50 years. A few years after Torme died, I had a conversation with Hal Gaba, head of Concord Records (Torme's record label for almost 20 years) encouraging him to do a boxed set in honor of Torme, I envisioned it as including unreleased tracks, live performances, etc. from throughout his Concord years, which were arguably his best in terms of vocal quality, consistency of material, etc. Gaba essentially told me that no one would buy it, and that Torme's albums only appealed to a very small audience. I thought it was incredibly sad that an artist of Torme's caliber was so under-appreciated. He was never less than 100% committed to his craft, and his artistry and technique only improved as he got older. I'm glad I was at least able to see him perform "live" once, before his career was cut short by his stroke.
Best scat singer ever. When I was a teen I'd see him on Carson and he was just an old guy that didn't impress me, but now as I've matured I see that he was a HUGE talent. I love the guy, AND, he wrote "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire..."
@@Dukkyjames200 My favorite episodes of the original Night Court TV series showed Mel or had references toward him by Harry. Mel could do it all: write, sing and play almost all instruments. What a talent and a true gentleman! I play drums and I would like to have one-tenth of his talent!
Greatest scat singing I've ever heard, and that includes the great Ella Fitzgerald! When I first heard Mountain Green aryl all those years ago I knew Mel Torme was something special. Glad he's kept the best Wine till last. Dick Tynan Dublin Ireland 2o2o
My brother and I were sitting behind military and his kids in the show we were watching a John Wayne movie in harm's Way when we got out of the theater we were walking behind him and he thought he was we were following him but we weren't just in all of them thank you
I got to see Mel perform once live in Phoenix and it was wonderful. People in the business who knew him well often talked about his ego, but I don't care ...he is one of the most versatile swing style singers in the style of Ella Fitzgerald and Sinatra that I am aware of. Michael Buble has brought some of that swing back for us.
They blocked comments on Lullaby of Bird Land! I need to tell anyone who cares that it is the lovely version of this song I have ever heard..... Mr. Tormè was the quintessence of cool! I also love this version of Autumn Leaves. Simply beautiful!
Does anyone here have any idea what an amazing performance of Autumn Leaves this is? Try and do that 'scat singing' with the utter perfection that Torme is doing here. It's flawless
The falling leaves drift by the window The autumn leaves of red and gold I see your lips, the summer kisses The sun-burned hands I used to hold Since you went away the days grow long And soon I'll hear old winter's song But I miss you most of all my darling When autumn leaves start to fall C'est une chanson, qui nous ressemble Toi tu m'aimais et je t'aimais Nous vivions tous deux ensemble Toi qui m'aimais moi qui t'aimais Mais la vie separe ceux qui s'aiment Tout doucement sans faire de bruit Et la mer efface sur le sable les pas des amants desunis
An absolutely wonderful voice, and flawless musicianship. But I really can't get my head around this interpretation of what, to me, is a song that's reflective and full of sadness at something beautiful that is no more. I so wish he'd put into this something of the yearning spirit he gave to 'Round Midnight.

The best version of Autumn Leaves I've ever heard.

Eva Cassidy does a great version as well something else.

A Legend that shouldn't be forgotten..... But as the years go by... sadly so many forget....

Man, he is just PHENOMINAL
Of you're into Jazz singing, you've got to hear and consequently love Mel Tormé. What a talent!
I sing jazz myself and can scat pretty naturally but I got nothing on Mel. Criminally underrated.

@@boomerguy9935 Great sense of humour to boot as well. His monologue at the beginning of “pick yourself” never fails to crack me up.
The immortal Mel Torme' . Virtually every song in his later years ,as here,is definitive! I doubt that we will see his like again.
Greatest scat singing I've ever heard, and that includes the great Ella Fitzgerald!

The greatest scatmaster of all times!
Leave it to Mel Torme to make even sadness feel somehow upbeat, even strangely joyous!!!
Woe. At 2.15 he throws in some of "Yesterday when I was young". Legend. Legendary.
A musical powerhouse is this amazing singer!

Saw him live once. I was in my early twenties and I was so impressed.

My jazz voice teacher showed me this version, and I was like 😧 Definitely need to vocally transcribe this
Ca ne fait que confirmer ce que j'ai toujours pensé : Mel Tormé supérieur à Frank Sinatra.

Immediately became my favorite jazz singer (at least non-black female, but that's HUGE)
Anyone know where to find the rest of this concert? Wow, what it would have been like to be there...
좋다
I usually play autumn leaves,I want play like him
재즈란 말입니다.... 에서 여기까지 왔음.
It’s Sinatra times three
Shouldn't be compared to Sinatra. Sinatra didn't scat.
Who is on keys??! This is amazing 😩😍
John Campbell!
Frank who?
Mel was the Boss
Fu*k, I wish every singer can sing like him!
