This was SO WILD hearing this for the first time. I was shocked but then I laughed because not only is it LITERALLY just Spongebob's voice but it also fits the drawing pretty well. Imagine being a kid who watched Spongebob and maybe seeing or hearing this show and hearing Spongebob talk about Star Wars

He also uses the voice for Dog in Catdog another Nickelodeon show that once ran on TV a long time ago. Not to mention considering how Dog’s lack of intelligence is similar to SpongeBob, he is basically the dog version of SpongeBob.

For the record, Tom Kenny's inspiration for the voice was overhearing a pissed of midget complaining the only job he could get was being Santa's elf. If you can believe it, Nick execs hate it when he tells that story.

I'm not even shocked the same voice was used before SpongeBob.
There are only so many voices one could make with their own voice, that some if not most will sound similar.
If you watch the Simpsons with a discerning eyes, you can occasionally detect voices that are too similar. Clancy Wiggums and Supernintendo Chalmers are obviously the same guy, especially when you hear him yelling angrily. Barney and homet and grandfather sound the same, just with different levels of throat pressure. And so on.

Play Spyro 2 Ripto's Rage (1999). There's a level called Hurricos, which has these little guys called Electrolls. Tom Kenny not only voices Spyro in that game, but also the Electrolls, who sound an awful lot like Spongebob
Indeed. They are very much Spongebob in another physical form. My favorite level of that game to just be in the world, the music's top notch and I love the weather it has going. It's so relaxing. But it's hilarious to hear Spongebob when you talk to them. The new game replaced the voices, made me so mad smh.

Tom Kenny also used his SpongeBob voice for the Hurricos NPCs in Spyro 2. That game came out around the same time as SpongeBob and it became such a hit show that he didn’t even bother reprising the same voice when they remade the game in 2018.

This show was the best mature comedy cartoon of its era. It was miles ahead of anything else at the time. Thanks for reminding me it existed.
Mission Hill debuted a few months after SpongeBob did. Tom Kenny was working on both shows at the same time and actually thought SpongeBob would be short lived while Mission Hill would go on for years much like The Simpsons ironically.
It really should've. It deserved at least a couple more seasons.

@@1990maman he probably did see the greatness, but maybe doubted it'd be a hit with its target audience of young kids or that meddling greedy execs would shitcan it, as they're oft to do with great shows in their prime. whereas he thought Mission Hill would've been a hit with its target audience of adults, and Simpsons mania was still going pretty strong at the time so it seemed more certain.
both are brilliantly funny but the bar for cartoons aimed at kids had only recently begun to go up from its rather low standard, due to Nickelodeon being on the up and up before SpongeBob made it explode. Before that, Rugrats was more successful than anything Nick had done before and the prevailing attitude then was probably "if it's not like Rugrats, don't expect it to go for very long," but obviously that changed.
0:13 if there's something that very distinctly characterizes Mission Hill's artstyle are those smear frames for whenever the characters quickly turn their heads even when it's just by 1 centimeter

that was such a good gag. Dilbert and Mission Hill both suffered from being way too smart for a network aiming to be as low-brow as possible.
If you want another good example of this, in the game Lands of Lore 3, Clancy Brown plays the head of the fighters guild in it. He just used his Mr. Krabs voice for this character.
in fairness, my man clanky brown really just has the one voice. He's a great actor, lots of range, but changing his voice is one thing he doesn't do.
I dunno why, but it makes me happy seeing how happy he seems to be.
