    I've had a Canon EOS R (30mp) since late 2019. I love most of the photographs and video that come out of the EOS R except in certain low light situations, and I don't like the crop in 4K. I've owned the Sony a7siii (12mp) for about a month now, which I absolutely bought for both video and stills. I just got through testing both cameras side-by-side for low light, resolution, and color. First I was surprised at how well the EOS R did in low light compared to the a7siii... until you hit those really high ISOs. Once you hit the high ISOs all those extra megapixels mean nothing! The a7siii had similar or better detail as the EOS R in high ISOs because the EOS R has higher noise in low light (obliterating detail). In good light with my Aputure c300d II at around 50% with a 30" Glow Easy Dome/Dish on it, both cameras did stunningly well. The EOS R does out-resolve the a7siii when you pixel peep at tiny eyelashes and such, but I was STUNNED at how close the 12mp a7siii looked. It's a fantastic hybrid camera for general photos and video as long as you don't need to crop much. Last thing, I'm still learning how to best set up the a7siii for color, but I'm already getting more accurate (to my eyes) color from it, than I got from the EOS R, which does a fine job itself. Oh, last last thing, the menus were easy to learn. I just had to watch a few good youtube tutorials. For now I'm keeping both cameras. I still want the extra megapixels for certain photo work including studio photos. The only thing keeping me from switching totally to Sony now is that huge price tag on the a1. I'd love to see an a74 with 30 megapixels at a reasonable price so that I could switch to a single system.

      I definitely agree...I used to have the original A7S and it had great image quality especially in low light compared to my A7R II, it was cleaner, sharper less noise. Of course the A7R II was the king then of image quality and resolution. My point the A7S was still good.
      People are fixated again on megapixel counts...back in 2004-2005 I saw pro photographers with their big pro cam bodies like a Nikon D2 or something it only had 12MP and not that great iso range.

    Kyle, you absolutely killed it on this one. Most people have gotten into this huge megapixel war and it is unfounded most of the time. 12mp is more than enough for most people. You just showed the size of a ton of Doctor's and Dentist office sized prints in your last example. The Nikon D700 had 12mp and it is still used today and it produces beautiful images. The Nikon D4, D4s, have 16mp, the Nikon D5 and D6 are around 20 megapixels and you have professional sports shooters, who still use them.
    Most people don't even print, they post on the web. If you are a wildlife shooter, or shooting planes and jets and you crop a lot, then your image if you don't have long glass will fall apart. How many people go to their doctors, Hospitals and dentist's office look at the large photos and say well that's crappy. You look at the larger image overall, but if you did look closely and are a pixel peeper you can see the problems, but most don't. The big thing with the cameras that I mentioned is the pixels on the sensor are actually larger and are able to bring in much more light because of it, so the photos when the exposure correct gather much more light.
    This is why Sony did this for videography and the A7SIII does so well in low light Videography and low light Photography. I own the A7SIII, A9, A7RIII and the A7IV, so yes, I know how good the A7SIII is for photos, it is magnificent. Thank you for doing this Kyle because it needs to be done and said more often. I challenge any of you to take the A7SIII out at night for photography with a 1.4 aperture lens and see how low your iso will be by comparison to the other cameras that I have and how much cleaner some of your images can be in some cases better than the cameras that I already mentioned. Those larger megapixel cameras do have their purpose, but for a lot of people they are unneeded.

    I use my a7s3 more than my OG a7r3.
    Other reasons for it are the virtually non existent rolling shutter. Ability to shoot fast pace images in silent mode without any distortion, no banding using silent shooting with artificial lighting, buffer never fills, significantly smaller files sizes and the list goes on

    Great video man, so much value! A few months back I was afraid to use my A7siii for photography projects, but I’ve found it does a good enough job for social media, and this video eliminated any doubts I had about printing shots taken on it. The inability to crop in is the only downside, but it has forced me to get the frame right in camera which is good practice. Have you found a way to preview the files on mac before loading them into LR or PS?

    • @kylemeshna
      @kylemeshna  3 года назад +2

      Yeah exactly, I think you just need to be a lot more intentional with your framing in camera... which does lead to me bringing more lenses than I'd like to sometimes lol.
      As for the previewing files on a Mac. I'm so glad someone else is having this issue too haha! I've emailed both Sony and Apple customer support multiple times trying to get an answer, but no luck yet. Resolution of more pixels is just hype!!! I started in 2014 with original A7s because it was like night vision, sky full of stars with a very bright ground at the time f/4 lenses. Capturing stars is the real test of lenses for clarity, sharpness, wide angle pincushion distortion and RESOLUTION! High Pixel numbers YES are better for cropping, but how much cropping is done? I now own the A7Siii (because they stopped making the Sii) and the 1224 f/2.8, 20 f/1.8 and 24 f/1.4. The detail of the lenses and the A7SM3 of the Milky Way and ground beach/driftwood at +300x zoom bark groves are really sharp and now extra stars are seen in the dark horse nebula dark section, the milky path from horizon to horizon stars on each side are like led light stars that are concentrated and on the path are the faraway stars like stepping stones scattered so as not to fall into the deep darkness. The stitching of frames of a panorama can now be done even in Ps/Lr/ON1 RAW without interruption between using 15 degrees between shots. The main PLUS today is Topaz Gigapixel getting a 300MP image to print from that could be cropped, if you SO DESIRE! I compared an image using the 2470 f/2.8 GM lens on the A7SM3 and the A7RM2 of driftwood trees at 50 yards zooming at 400% able to count bark trails and ridges on a Sand Dollar that was at the bottom nearest, just using the rule of f/# two stops above widest for best sharpness near and far, on both cameras. So Stills on the A7SM3 are superb, like the original A7S that started the on camera video craze, should not be ignored!!!!

Nobody complained or noticed :-) Megapixels is great for cropping in, but not really that necessary for most shots - and if you enhance/enlarge in like PS most people wouldn´t even notice any major difference. Besides most photos are used mainly for screens/web these days in 72dpi - so 12 megapixels will be more than enough most of the time.

    It’s strange people ask this questions as if digital photography started with high megapixel camera like photographers were shooing and making prints with 12mps and fewer for years so if they were able to make prints then why wouldn’t they now

    I actually love it! The photos in my A7s3 are good. Ok, not as good as my a74’s photos. But I like how my a7s3 handles the luminance.

    I have been loving my S3 for photography. The color out of it reminds me of my old Nikon D700. Except it has virtually no noise. I had a few events to cover for several days and they had super crap light. So between my A9, A7r3, and S3 I found myself using the S3 for 90% of the time. Since then, I have shot a pile of events with the S3. The photos get used on social media.........so why go crazy with resolution? I now have added an A1 because the S3 made me realize how old and worn out my other bodies feel. I wonder which one will win my event battle? I have feeling I will still prefer the S3 for basic event stuff.

    • @kylemeshna
      @kylemeshna  3 года назад +1

      I think if you’re doing event photography you might find the added speed and AF performance on the A1 pretty wonderful. I think it does pretty decent in low light too. I just posted some thoughts about the A1 as a separate video as well btw

    • @infinityphotorob
      @infinityphotorob 3 года назад +1

      @@kylemeshna I know the A1 blows the S3 out of the water in most situations. But man that 12 mega pixels is super practical for a lot of applications. I think people get wrapped up in megapixels and might never print a thing. Great review pointing out how big you can actually go. Especially with the new Adobe tools.

      How’s the noise in photos compared with a7r3?

    • @kylemeshna
      @kylemeshna  3 года назад

      @@gimaru1 Much petter noise performance compared to the A7r3. What are you using it for? Theres some added benefits of the smaller sensor as well for stuff like Astro. You'll have less star trails on the a7siii for a given exposure time due to lower MP sensor.
      All around, the noise performance is fantastic on this camera. Dont think there's a camera out there that does better in low light scenarios.

    A little late to the party but your 100% RUclipsrs saying its an IG/social image producer-only, with AI getting better with systems like Adobe's raw enhancer i generally think it will go back the other way eventually. Another thing that people miss with this sensor (I've only had it on loan and testing files from Dp review raw files) is the colour. Its very very fuji like (if not a little better) don't know what they've done but none of their other cameras are like this (must be a nightmare for sony shooters with an arsenal of sony bodies to match colour quickly), if anyone is a fuji shooter like me and you're looking to move over for whatever reason but still lust after your fuji colours this is closest with very little work by a good long way. The images have a fantastic filmic quality to them. As for cropping well, it just has to be done in-camera with zoom lenses, the holy trinity will be a must for this camera. This will make a better photog for sure in regards to cropping.

    I really do not understand who would purchase this camera and expect it to be a photo centric camera. At the professional level (not consumer or prosumer level) each camera has it’s niche. If you are a professional photographer/videographer it shouldn’t come as a surprise to you. As a Professional, you understand that you purchase “tools” based on your niche. As a consumer maybe you would by the latest release from a manufacturer and not understand that it’s not a “one size fits all” when it comes to the professional full frame camera market. These manufacturers design these tools for professionals to earn a living and get the most return for their investment. My camera makes me money and I earn my living from it, so why would I purchase a camera that would not cater to my niche?
    Why would anyone purchase a camera clearly designed toward video shooters and expect it to be exceptional at anything other than the target market it was designed for? The “S” on a Sony Alpha camera stands for “Sensitivity” meaning better low light image quality and fewer pixels. Whereas the “R” stands for resolution meaning more pixels. If I want a high resolution camera for print work and/or commercial photography I would purchase a Sony A7RIII or A7RIV. Purchasing an A7SIII and complaining about the print resolution would be tantamount to me buying a Corvette ZR1 and then complaining that it doesn’t have a good for towing capacity for a 14,000 LBS trailer (Should’ve purchased a Chevy 2500 HD if I wanted that).

    Thanks but as has been mentioned, 115ppi is awful quality. Even a magazine which prints at smallest 8x11, editors and art directors want 300dpi. So sure, 115ppi COULD work for personal work because of viewing distance from the posters, but for serious printing, this camera is just a no.

  • @msbrownbeast

    12 megapixels may be sufficient for that poster, but if that same picture was taken by an A7RIV or a Canon R5, the image would have been even better

      If you arent printing your work and only viewing them on smartphones and computer monitors, you are really doing yourself a disservice., Every photographer should be printing at least some of their work and really enjoying it. I make up to 24x36s, and all sizes in between, from my work quite often.

    • @foljs5858
      @foljs5858 2 года назад

      @@michaelbell75 You can do 24x36s with a 6MP camera. People did all the time when it was "state of the art" and you wont see much difference from 12MP or 24MP... It's also not about "yourself" - it's about printing for customers and such.
