Nightwish style themselves as “openly secular” and do have a few songs, like this one, that are critical of organized religion in general, especially when it’s used to control people and stifles free thought.

Floor Jansen can sing her heart out. She is a legend and deserves all the recognition.
One of my favourites of Human Nature. It´s also amazing live in concert, so heavy.

As someone that isn't religious I do enjoy hearing thoughtful religious people talk about their views. It's always enlightening to hear different points of view.
Regarding fearing death and making up something worse than death, I do think it makes sense from a logical perspective. The same goes for the often accompanying idea of a possibility for something greater than life after death. Both of those two concepts allow people to say how to behave in order to avoid the former and reach the latter. It's quite beneficial to be able to use divine authority to tell people how to behave. Telling people to do things because it's the right thing to do isn't always enough, but when you play on people's fears and desires they will have a more personal stake in it.
It's of course not saying that a believer has to think that it was made up. It's not proven so one can just view it as a hypothetical proposition.

I think it was David Wood who said that God turned the worst thing that could ever happen into the greatest thing that will ever happen...the cross. Only our God could turn the human meaning of the cross into His symbol of hope and salvation.

Thank you for the reaction.I found interesting your comments on the lyrics. At 19:50 you say that religion creates more mystery and more fear than nature itself, therefore it wouldn't seem possible that religion was invented to address our fear of nature. The point is that religion offers control, nature doesn't. With religion you are told what to do to avoid the worst, control is given back to you. With nature you have no control.Religion tells you that if you do good, then you end up in a nice place, nature doesn't. Surely I am saying nothing new to you: I'd like to know your thoughts about it.

Enjoyed the conversation. People expect God to break open the sky and reach his hand in for whoever. But thats not how it works, that's not how God operates, that's not how God designed the universe.
