Makes it even more important to teach our children how to resist specious ads, and to use logic to differentiate between needs and wants. Thanks, guys.
Imagine you see lots of money in front of you and your friends also have that but your parents stopping you take that ... That's how your kid would feel
Being aware is step 1. Step 2 is taking steps to reform/eliminate such exploitative systems in our society, because as long as we are human we will be susceptible to these sorts of psychological manipulation as much of it is unconscious.
The cartoon panel with the cat becoming besotted with the scary killer mouse is just inspired. Many congratulations to the artist for the fabulous facial expressions..!
Subliminal messaging, not in just ads, but movies, music, social media, and all forms of information we process is also subject to this effect. For example, if we see people punished for a specific opinion over and over again, we will eventually conclude that that opinion is wrong, regardless of debate, logic, or data.
Banksy's theory that ads "belong" to you is pretty useless to most people unless they are a graffiti artist. Instead, in the Western world where "freedom" is so highly prized, it's more useful to see ads as an infringement of our perceptual freedom - they capture our attention without our consent. Whether it's the freedom to admire a nice view, or the freedom to read or watch media without distraction, advertisements violate our public spaces and our media.
I started theorizing about something similar right after the show Wednesday showed up, I couldn't find another reason for Jenna getting that popular in such a tiny time interval
There are certain things that we are exposed to, whether we want it or not. However, we can decide what we expose ourselves to in our free time and especially on the Internet.
This is also why representation in media is such a hot topic. If you're, for bland example, a purple people eater, then being represented in media will lead to being accepted more easily by society. On the other end, people who believe that eating purple people is morally wrong would prefer this not happen.
I love this art style. You made me feel genuine compassion for the fictional lady traumatized by the electric kettle xD. Also, I didn't instinctively feel anything about any of the shapes. I must have brain damage or something. That would explain so much...
@@sprouts it's funny, but sometimes the opposite thing happens: the more you see a certain image, person, etc, the more you distrust and dislike it, thinking smth like "those are everywhere, I'm fed up with them, leave me alone!" or "that's a manipulation, stop forcing me into liking it" And as far as I know, this pattern is not that rare. And it works even if initially you felt neutral about that thing you start seeing everywhere Maybe more alert and pessimistic people are more prone to this pattern
Of all the countless years I've been watching videos on youtube, I can only count on one hand the things ads showed me that I actually would have wanted or would have a use for. If the ad was unskipable, I'd immediately LOATHE whatever is being advertised no matter what it was.

I always wonder how learning this particular knowledge can lead you to be less bias or not. If so, it seems like we have found a cure to the Mere Exposure Effect just by learning it periodically.
Honestly ads that are un-skippable are like new songs on the radio that get repeatedly played. Its not that they are good, it that the public is forced to endure them when there are other things people like more
They are not disliked enough to be hated, they are more of an annoyance. It works because if you're constantly exposed to a certain brand for a type of product, let's say for a soap for the dishwasher, next time you go to the supermarket and you need soap for the dishwasher, you will be more likely to buy a brand that you have already seen somewhere over those you know nothing about, because humans crave familiarity, that's basically how it works
I have nothing against ads, rally. I can ignore them, and I can tell my kids 'no'. But what disturbs me is people using this exposure effect to change culture.
im self aware and HATE adverts and billboards and the more I see the same ads, the less likely I am to buy that product. A local car dealership uses planes pulling advert ribbons, they will never get a dollar from me for making me see ads in the blue sky
I'm with banksy Ads can burn down for all I care. They are paradoxically a cancer on our time and mental space, yet they are the things that enable this messed up system to barely function. Without ads there would be no RUclips, but RUclips without ads would be such a much nicer experience.
The problem is that everyone needs to live. Without ads there is no platform, with no platform, no content. Ideally everyone would be paid fairly for educating others online but the only way to be able to live from it is ads, which is really sad
I HATE advertisements. I wish they were all comedic. That way they'd at least be giving me something through brightening my day instead of trying to take my money from me.
This goes a long way to explain conservative values. While I think we need plenty of change as a civilization, people naturally want the things to be like they were.
Well, I completely stopped watching broadcast television over a decade ago because I could no longer tolerate seeing that asinine insurance lizard on every commercial break on every show on every channel all day every day year after year so THAT didn't work. Even skipping it with a DVR every time was just too annoying.
Yes! Please ban billboards, or at least make them super rare and only for smaller companies, like a local shop or something, not the 1456th store chain that shamelessly donates to republicans putting up walls or pigs. The amount of ads we are exposed to it's frankly absurd, I dare you to try and look at 4 videos on youtube with no premium or adblocker on any device, you'll grow tired real quickly
I dunno if this is true, since a decade ago we started to see “lgbt” rainbow and trans ppl everywhere, even in billboards, that’s as much exposure as it gets and I (who had no formed opinion about it before) hate this particular group

Politicians are using this effect as well.
Lies repeated at least 3x in each exposure is effective.
Yes!!!

I totally have experienced the one about disliking something/someone more and more after being exposed more and more to it/him/her.

"Familiarity breeds acceptance"
so true
That is precisely how social engineering works.

Maybe that’s why sometimes I see repeats of same commercials online/tv.
I wonder how this very interesting Mere effect is related to "confirmation bias", 🤔
They could be siblings

First contact can also be all curiosity rather than fear. Though, fear at first exposure can be a good survival trait.
Thank you, this is very good to know.
Glad it was helpful!
I bought an espresso machine ☕ just by this effect , thank you 😂
Perfect!

How interesting it is to watch this and then immediately get bombarded with advertisements from for-profit companies for stuff I don’t need….
Makes sense why some lawmakers are pushing to expose children to sexual concepts, under a veneer of righteous indignation against "book banning."
...Okay, book bans *are* fascist but you might be onto something.
All ads are disliked by their intrusive nature. So why do advertisers still do it?
They are not disliked enough to be hated, they are more of an annoyance. That explains why I can't be in the same room with a Television.
I tend to become angry and ready to throw out the TV!
I have nothing against ads, rally. I can ignore them, and I can tell my kids 'no'. But what disturbs me is people using this exposure effect to change culture.

My pleasure 😊

ADHD makes me immune and annoyed by repetitive bombardments
Educating yourself guides the unconscious
so you can be made to hate something essential to your continued existence if it's shoved in your face too much?
@@garrid3244 how trite or you
I feel the opposite, the repeated exposure to ads makes me HATE them.
It helps a lot to have an initial dislike of most advertisements.
Very good point
Wait, so an active hatred of all ads and the products shown within them is a good thing?
I have seen people hating someone initially but gradually liking that person by merely getting exposed to them. Have you encountered that?
the science of ads

I can barely even stomach anything other than text and audio media. Faces and designs offend my senses.
2:02 I wonder if they really show them the Chinese character 屁.... that character means fart 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Have you guys made this topic in Spanish?
It is coming soon on the Spanish channel!
Nice
Thanks :) Keep learning

So Haters are going to hate, or it is an acquired taste.
Maybe this is a good explanation on why xenophobia exists. We reject unusual faces and ways.
my guess is the ugly iPhone design ( cameras look like a stove) is just accepted because of the mere exposure effect.
Is this why I keep going back to my ex?
👍

This seems to be the technique used by religious institutions +
Commercials must be band for the own good of the community
Make it illegal to advertise in public.
This is in the Bible. Guard the gates of your eyes and ears. Be careful what you let through.
