This video taught me two things. 1- bells and whistles aside, it's most important to drive the terrain well (picking good lines, turning front wheels back and forth for added traction, bumping past an obstacle with a little momentum, etc.) 2- open diffs are open diffs, and that puts vehicles at a real disadvantage for driving offroad.

@@enebolsa9815 Exactly. Even an early 2000s Ford Explorer or Chevy Trailblazer with true 4Hi/4Lo would go right up that. But they were built on truck platforms and have real 4x4 systems. Unfortunately, they've turned all these early real 4x4s SUVs that offered comfort, space and utility into gas sipping weenies that can't make it up hills like this. You should work for Subaru - that’s an excellent solution to avoid CVT and keep good fuel economy. My old 2009 XT turbo with four-speed auto ran perfectly and was a master of steep tracks and sand.
Not all RAV4s get the AWD system that this one had. I think there's 3 different AWD systems Toyota puts in the RAV4, depending on trim. Also Toyota's AWD is "On Demand". It is not a full time AWD system, like Subaru. So depending on the circumstance, one might win one day, and the other the next. If you already don't know, and "On Demand" system only sends power to the other axle when it feels slip. If it doesn't feel slip, these On Demand AWD systems are almost always just FWD vehicles.
@@knightryder3757 Subaru with it's CVT and junk software LSD wasn't built for something like this. Great video comparison. I know these are all CUVs, not full out SUVs like 4Runner or Explorer. However, CUVs now the largest segment in vehicle sales, and since car makers love to market off road abilities, we still like to see how these perform in real world off roading.
Good to see the Sportage do as well as it did. I have one. While I don't drive off-road like that, it has never got stuck in a snowstorm. I love the traditional six speed automatic it has.

Excellent explanations of the road conditions and what the drivers are doing, using all options. Useful to prospective buyers and manufacturers. Great video
Not surprised at all. Since Subaru switched to the CVT they just aren’t as good as the older 4EAT/5EAT versions, especially the 2009-2013 Forester or 2010-2014 Outback 3.6R that have traction control. The 2020 Tiguan has the most capability of the group. Haldex 5 is a gigantic improvement over previous iterations and is arguably the best here. What makes the Tiguan the best of the group is not only the most torque but the best gearing at an 18:1 crawl ratio. By the way, I had 2 Subaru’s, still love them but sad they use CVTs, and FYI, I drive a Honda Passport with a 3.5L V6 and a 20:1 crawl ratio. It has a mechanical rear LSD and is on another level (that’s why I bought it 😃). I’m not a VW fan, just saying it’s the best in this video.
I'm a fan of Subarus and I'm not surprised by its performance. The CVT really degraded the AWD's capability. Believe me, a 3.6 Outback with the 5EAT will walk up that hill.
@@PlymouthNeon almost a year ago Subaru became part of Toyota Motor Group. There’s now a pathway to get a proper transmission into Subarus. Both companies would have awesome AWD vehicles if they took the best from both platforms. As far as the best AWD vehicles, can’t **beat** the Jeep trail hawks. Especially the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee trail hawks with real 4 low and a real rear locking differential. Ford may join the elite club with the bronco sport. Below those vehicles and you have the mechanical rear LSD vehicles, like Honda iVTM4/ Acura SH-AWD, and then vehicles with the GKN twinster rear diff, like the Volvo XC90, Ford Expedition, Chevy blazer. The Rav4 system doesn’t seem to be a true LSD. The vehicles in this comparison are just open diff + traction control.
I have seen several videos where the Toyota RAV4 consistently wins this kind of off-road tests. I was thinking to buy the Subaru but now I am convinced that the RAV4 is a better option. I enjoyed the video

I don't understand why the Forester and other cars have been bothered all along with ESP on, which helps at higher speeds and not in such heavy terrain. They have it written in the Owners Manual that ESP needs to be turned off, just read. CVT is excellent, she could playfully handle it - the whole test is designed for sensation. We have the Forester in Slovakia, even with only a 2.0 engine, in the mountains we drive with it every day in often worse terrain. Forester has other ailments, but certainly not field skills. PS: Try driving on such a hill for another ten minutes with each car and then you will see, rather your nose will feel the differences between Haldex, Magna-Steyr and AWD.
@@gabrielksh86 exactly. The video is NOT about the driving skills. A skillful can drive that trail on a lowrider. This show how these AWD cars are market-positioned and what is the real engineering behind slogans and ads.
@@viktoristic3723 the point of this test it is not "just driving" to top of the hill. Frankly, I was disappointed with the trailing prowesses of them all. These low-powered cars don’t have the torque to be good at off-roading without a lot of gear. The Toyota Land Cruiser has V-8 power, a “normal” transmission, low range, and uses traction-control AWD, and even with street tires, it will crawl up muddy and rutted ‘walls” with hardly slipping a wheel. The crime is that these little sawed-off AWD CUV’s are marketed to be much more than they really are.
@@sking2173 Most of them will just be mall crawlers anyway. People now just want to have a high driving position. And if that offers better visibility, I don't blame them. But yeah, who buy these cars, don't buy them for tough off roading. If the AWD systems helps in the snow, rain and light off roading conditions like bad roads and gravel then I guess that's enough for the buyers. Who wants real off roading buys a real SUV.
Rav 4 was excellent. The biggest problem all these cars have is that they are petrol (gas) engines. The diesel engined versions produce their torque at much lower revs, producing less slippage. The diesels perform much better off road.

excellent video! my only issue is you didn't try disabling the traction control on the cx5. it's known that mazda's awd system performs better in off road situations with traction control off vs on. the traction control lets the wheels slip ironically. it helps with maintaining control when going at speed on loose surfaces. disabling the traction control makes the brakes work more aggressively to get stop the slipping wheels, transferring more power to the loaded wheels. probably won't fix the over heating but you tried enabling/disabling systems on other cars. i wanted to see what the mazda could do had traction control been disabled. it would also probably be similar to the off road mode on the newer cx-5's.
Surprised that Kia and Nissan outperform mitsubishi and subaru, not too bad for changan and I didn't expect such a good performance from the RAV4,quite impressive for a compact SUV on street tires.
Great comparison video. If you can compare hybrid SUVs in an upcoming video, then it will be useful to see how torque from electric motors can assist. Great stuff ♥️

I've played around with it off-road and it's pretty darn capable. I don't know for sure but I think maybe better than the X-mode, which is about computer controlling, whereas our one is perhaps cruder but works better? Note here quite a few cars were actually giving over-heat warnings while the Scooby didn't. The Scooby also has more ground clearance and better approach/departure angles than some of the others, especially the Nissan. Heck it has the same ground clearance as the Mitzi Triton truck. For our real off-road camping and adventures we take my heavily modified Hilux, complete with roof tent etc. That would stomp all over these obstacles as it's been modded with a locking rear diff. Not computer controlled, big fuck-off steel cogs that WILL force both wheels to turn at exactly the same speed. These little cross-overs use computers to brake or send power to different wheels and basically imitate the 4WD and locking diffs of a real truck or truck-based SUV. I do think the newer Subaru systems err on the side of caution, and protect the CVT from damage by limiting what you ask of it. So do they now win every such video? Nah. But they last longer, and remember any of these could have got over this mild stuff by just using a bit more speed and maybe a better line, ie they could do it, here they deliberately stopped them and demanded they start again from stationary. That's not real-world, where the Scooby would scamper up there with no problem or drama. If we didn't have the Scooby I'd go the Rav 4 but of all of them, as a compete package, the Scooby is still the best.
@@bigglyguy8429 Agreed. Pre CVT Subarus would perform a lot better. Is your EAT as well? I also agree that Subaru was the only system that didn't overheat, and I would like to think its because of better built AWD rather than just pushing the system harder. But I would have to say comparing Subaru against other cars in the segment, the major deal that sets them apart is/was their AWD performance. If not looking for AWD, Toyota would be the more reliable, Kia would be cheaper, CX 5 more sportier and CR-V probably a better car overall. Also, to your point that another route can be taken... Yes it can be, and in 90% of the cases, a FWD sedan would also be more than enough, but people buy an AWD to address the remaining 9% of the cases. Expected RAV4 to perform well but Forester’s performance was a surprise.
Toyota and Subaru should partner and combine Toyota's reliable AISIN 8-speed transmission and Subaru's mainstream AWD.
To me all these suvs are behaving the same ...I must say I was expecting more from the forester due to its reputation but so disappointed 😕😕😕

@@slandshark they probably use a manual for the tests, manual has better awd
@@keponen331 They don't make manuals anymore. Yeah, something off here. A Rav 4 is nothing more than a slip and grip system. The front wheels slip and the back wheels kick in a brief assist. The Subaru is full time AWD. All four wheels are turning constantly. Might be the type of tires they had on it, although I was recently camping in backcountry Montana when we had four days of rain and the roads turned to gumbo. There were 4wd pickups and ATVs stuck everywhere. I didn't even try to move for almost a week. The only thing driving around was a Subaru Outback with stock tires!

CVT literally killing Subie's credibility
I hope top management realize this before it's too late
not the cvt. it is the skill of the driver. the forester can do much better than what i watch here.
The course have stop points to face different obstacle from 0, not just mashing up the throttle from the bottom to the top. When the subie tried you can see the limiter stop arround 3k rpm, that's a "safety feature" of most of the CVT for preserve the belt not to be overstretched by engine load. It's a no no feature for a car that had been marketed as AWD because when a vehicle in the position with only 3 tyres (or less) in contact if the ground . You need more power to move forward in which you couldn't do that with 3k rmp.

I am happy for the Toyota Rav4. Surprising results.
Who wants real off roading buys a real SUV.

excellent video! my only issue is you didn't try disabling the traction control on the cx5. it's known that mazda's awd system performs better in off road situations with traction control off vs on. the traction control lets the wheels slip ironically. it helps with maintaining control when going at speed on loose surfaces. disabling the traction control makes the brakes work more aggressively to get stop the slipping wheels, transferring more power to the loaded wheels. probably won't fix the over heating but you tried enabling/disabling systems on other cars. i wanted to see what the mazda could do had traction control been disabled. it would also probably be similar to the off road mode on the newer cx-5's.

I was about to buy the new model xtrail but I had some doughts now am 100% sure. Amazing
Kudos to this channel for honest reviews.
I own a Forester 2019 and am humiliated with the results! Crown jewel of AWD bites the dust. Forester performed barely better than the Mitsubishi. Used to look down on Rogue for its AWD capability but performed way better than expected. And lastly, RAV4, AWD was the only section that Toyota didn't excel in (in mid priced SUVs atleast) but the way RAV4 performed was phenomenal. So predictable, calm with the reliability of a Toyota.
Should have bought a Rav4. :'(
The on-road ability of the Subaru is far better. It's like a baby Quattro!
@@bigglyguy8429 Yeah, thats why I bought it. But at this point I am quite unsure if that is also just a perception. Before this video I used to think Subaru AWD will outperform all other players at its segment, but that has been proven to be far from the truth.
IMHO, AWD is most useful starting from a standstill or at low speeds (presented in the video), above that AWD's use-fullness is of diminishing returns
@@vang1278 I'm too lazy to find it but there's a vid showing how it does improve the road-holding, even at higher speeds. Just more balanced grip and traction, inc when you let off the throttle (which can unsettle a lot of cars). My wife has the earlier, non 'X mode' Crosstrek/XV.
IMHO the point of this test/video was to evaluate which SUV would tackle the off-road best and objectively RAV4 perform the best and Forester second to worst. Sorry man, I think I am still hurting to see Forester's performance I guess...
I never thought the day would come that a Rav4 performs better than Subaru off road
One of the best videos regarding this issue...Thank you
I bought a Toyota RAV4 XLE 2021. It's great, only things I miss from my previous RAV4 Limited 2017 are: Sunroof, Leather ish seats, and the possibility to open the trunk from my keys. Good brand, love it.
