Jazz & The Creative Influence of Islam - Inspiration: The Personal Journey of Kamilah Furqaan

Camille Jordan was born and raised in Chicago, and is a graduate of Chicago State University earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in music education. She is a classically-trained flutist, pianist and vocalist; who has performed with Kurt Brown, Diane Ellis, Da’wi Williams, and the late great Ghalib Ghallab amongst others. Her spiritual and stage name, Kamilah Furqaan, was given to her by the late Imam Warith D. Mohammed, her spiritual mentor. Kamilah recognizes her music as a gift from The Creator and endeavors to give the listener a fresh, honest, impassioned and entertaining musical experience.
Kamilah Furqaan will be in conversation with Tazeen Ayub, a Detroit-based musician, professor and community organizer.

This ongoing series highlights the contributions of Islam and Muslims in the birth and continued growth of jazz. These discussions and concerts are fundamental to changing conversations and attitudes about “belonging” in the history of jazz for Muslims and for other marginalized groups.
