Bad art and bad videos are a part of the cycle, you always have to go through the bad before another hard-hitter. With that in mind I mostly just sketch ideas when they come until one grows on me and then I bring it to the canvas
love the part about acting inherently having meaning! waiting for having motivation/meaning before acting is a vicious cycle for me.

I am my own worst enemy. I really like the battle metaphor. I tend to psyche myself out too much about who will see my art and how it’ll received instead of focusing on the journey of making it. It’s sort of a personal goal of mine to focus on the journey instead of the destination; in more than just my art, but my whole life.
It's crazy how relatable this is to me, I am also insanely good at talking myself out of doing things bc I want everything I do to come from a 'genuine' place and have meaning before I even start. Thank you for sharing this with us!!
A lot of points are so relatable, like the feeling of having to reinvent yourself with every bigger thing you create, because of the dissatisfaction with the last. I feel it comes down to disregarding or being too overly critical with everything you create and imo that is a weak point too. It sets us back and is not a realistic view of your creation either.
Also, for me personally, I feel everytime I pay more attention to posting art online and receiving and being received, is when I start to lose my original fun in creating, like so many others. But then again, both things are valid. Wanting to be received and being part of a (hopefully fun) community and taking a step back and protect yourself from falling to deeply into that hole. Overall, a struggle haha.

i know that writing this makes me no longer a lurker, but i really appreciate your acknowledgement of lurkers on your content. i feel like a lot of creators get really caught up in all of the attention they're getting from the people interacting with their works, as it's the most tangible way of receiving feedback and seeing all of the positive change they've initiated in others' lives. as if your rambles weren't already articulated well enough to confirm the authenticity of your stances, i really respect your appreciation of the people who are willing to be moved by your art without directly interacting with your posts. i think that mutual understanding with people that you'll never actually talk to is a really healthy signal of a genuine artist/creator. you're just making things that represent you, while distantly embracing all of the people who silently relate with it. so from me and all of the remaining lurkers out there, thank you for sharing your art and creating a hub for people who are excited in the development of their own individual journeys.
Im still trying to recover from a year long art block and sure I can draw but i haven’t been able to do anything without a reference or even create an OC but when I was a beginner it came so easily to me, even though I draw better now it filled me with more joy be for and I miss that, I have ideas but as a perfectionist if it’s not perfect fist try I give up, and now I force myself to make « bad drawing » even though I have no story to tell no goal, just to be comfortable drawing again. Thx for this video it was so relatable. ✦
As a fellow creator I know way too well that videos like these are hard to make because you know that they probably won't perform as well as the popular ones on your channel, but I want you to know that videos like these can have a huge impact on people's lifes and there's definitely people out there who are so grateful that you make these despite not commenting. This was a great video, and I can definitely relate to feeling as if everything I do has to be meaningful in some way or relate to a story I'm telling myself.
And by the end I finally understood that I need a Naruto vs Sasuke relationship with my art.

I'm at the part where you speak about videos being done before and I want to point out something. For more technical topics that have been done before, sometimes it's about the personal connection. For instance, I really struggled with perspective. I watched a ton of videos, read tutorials, and practiced. But I didn't really understand it until someone I followed for a long time started learning perspective and took their audience in that journey.
It wasn't that the topic was explained differently, it's the language and tone that helped me retain the information and get more value out of it. I noticed, now being 30, that I don't remember most of my high school lessons. But I still have some knowledge from classes taught by people who were more casual with me. Same goes for fun non-educational videos, they can be funnier when you have the context of who the person is
Meanwhile I have every idea and they all seem equally important

i love the part about acting before reflecting, experience really is a great teacher. and i absolutely agree on the "if you enjoy doing what you're doing, you won't notice the distance and time you've used". finding something to enjoy in the process of the activity (ie art & creative fields) is so important. it's so sad to see beginner artists hitting straight up learning the fundamentals & perspective (which is good nothing wrong with it) without playing around with it first. see what they like to draw. grinding as a first step for a beginner is a bad first step imho! they should foster the fun & passion for making art before they get serious because from the most ive seen, those beginners fall out of love in art. because it's not a race, it's more like a marathon while passing through beautiful landscapes. don't rush and have fun, or there's just no point.

This is genuinely a very insightful video. You said a lot of important things that I've never been able to put into words and I wish I've heard back when I was struggling with this (still am though so this video is a great reminder). I feel like the "pain and suffering" part of art is worth getting through whenever I do end up succeeding in making something that looks decent enough for the silly voices in my head. I tell myself that if I'd never fail it just wouldn't be as fun and exciting when I do get it right. Almost like playing minecraft on creative. Sure, some people enjoy it but I get bored after a short while. Sometimes mistakes have to be made and harships have to be overcome to figure out something innovative or just much more fulfilling. Thank you for making this video :D

About meaningful video. I really appreciate that you put a lot of effort, and thoughts and idea behind them. And not just uploading like 2 times a week just for the sake of it. I was really excited when I saw the new video, cause I know there gonna be some interesting topics or themes, exploration and plus you explained your thought process very well I think. So you are following your own advice on “create or be consumed” and plus treating audience with respect and honesty. But I understand that there a lot of pressure - the cost of being perfectionist. Wishing you. good luck with finding that balance between not being afraid and still producing meaningful videos (time from time at least )
First, I want to say that I just realise now that it's partly thanks to you that I watched ATLA in january. And now, I'm working on an animation about Zuko. See the nice effect you had? :)
Also, I agree with you on the "acting has meaning in itself" and it's the same for motivation. Motivation comes from acting too. Each time I can't draw for some days, it's so hard to get back to it. It's been 10 days since I last worked on my animation, while I used to literally think about it all the time and dream about it when I sleep. Yesterday night I watched what I had already done and I started feeling that motivation again. So today I'm gonna work on it :D
Lastly, about the fear of not holding up to the high expectations you set about yourself by doing amazing videos/art or anything, I say to myself that I'll just redo it in the future years later and be proud of the improvement. So I better do as good as I can now, even if it's still "bad", so I can see the improvement later. :)

Hmm, I get this. I'm the type not to start something until I have completely fleshed out an entire idea. So in the past, I didn't even start anything, then I started journaling everything. now I can follow through with an idea because of the time I spent getting my ideas down and evolve over time.
In terms of the RUclips pressures I think you understand that it definitely needs to be fun. But also think of videos this way, each video is a different flavor of what you want to make, not every one likes every flavor, so depending on how many people like that flavor will reflect your views/ like count. Also over time people who like that flavor might find your video, so it's not about views and likes but instead how many people who like this flavor have found this video. Just do what you want and have fun with it.

And on a sidenote my situation is exactly the good life that you describe haha. Everything is fine and I worked hard to put my life together. But then what? I could be not creating anything for the rest of my life and it would technically be fine but thare is this gaping maw right in the middle that takes too much space. I guess I have to make stuff then 😅

Oof, I know the feeling (though it's directed towards projects for me).
I find a good trick is to just make stuff pretty. Did I need to add embroidery to my bag? Nope! Does the design have any meaning? Nope! But it gives me something to do, I improved in the craft while doing it, and now I have something nice.
Practice is another reason for working on projects.
After I have that reason for creating (Practice, prettiness, etc.) I find the meaning after, like you said, since *making is the meaning*, making for makings sake.

I binge art materials but my inner materialist is so stingy that I will not use them unless it’s the next masterpiece.

I appreciate this video but I think I disagree with the note on “if it’s been better don’t do it”. I think totally valid to make something similar to another work, even if you don’t think it’s as good as that other work. Different things resonate with different people, so what might seem worse to you might be the best thing to someone else. Also, from a creator’s standpoint it can be really valuable to make something derivative/unoriginal/whatever because you might learn a lot during that process. Whatever you learn could then spark a new idea for something unique, or might hone your skills that empowers you to make other things. I think instead of asking yourself “is this original enough” you should ask “am I really passionate about making this thing?”
