@@momo8563 I think art has just grown. While finding a good, passionate artist was rare and awesome just a few decades ago, now they’re incredibly common. Not only this, but they’re a lot more skilled due to the infinite amount of resources available to them. Art isn’t a highly needed job (and there’s more than plenty of people filling up all the available spots) so there’s not much place for most people to go.
As an artist myself, I’m not even sure if I want to pursue a career in art. It’s only getting more competitive and even if it’s my only passion… well, passion isn’t putting food on my table

Hey! As someone working in the animation industry and who has been a part of the recruiting process I just wanted to say you have an amazing talent and dedication and passion. Also... don't get discouraged by THIS particular experience.. sometimes, most of the times, studios keep your portfolio if you don't make it into a position, and then when something else opens up that fits your application, they call you and see if you're available. So who knows this might not be the end of your ATLA journey! Good luck on your future endeavors!

    • @Szczurzyslawa

Hey if you don’t mind can you give us a bit of an insight about what aspects of her portfolio were strong and what might be improved from your perspective? Or what the recruitment team might have liked or disliked about it?

    • @LaraU101
      @LaraU101 5 месяцев назад +42

@@ty-zz9ic Hey! Honestly, I think OP's portfolio is really strong, though I'm an animator and not a character designer, so on specifics I'm not super knowledgable on the subject. I can say that when it came to really good portfolios and we had to pick and choose, it came down to the details and the specifics of the project. So it's not that they disliked something about OPs portfolio it's just that maybe there was another portfolio that adjusted a bit better to what they were looking for for the project.
As an example I can say... once we were looking for disney style animation, kind of realistic reminiscent of the Disney Renaisance and there were some really good anime esque portfolios/demos sent our way, they were pretty good but there were other portfolios that had the specific style we were looking for, so even if the anime style portfolios were great and strong, the disney style ones fit the porject better and we chose those. Sometimes it comes down to... we're looking for someone who has a natch for battle scenes, or crazy angles, or this specific style, so even really nice portfolios like OP's could not fit the inner brief of what they were looking for.
I don't know what the avatar crew might have been looking for exactly, but from what I see here, it could have been something regarding the variety? Let me explain, here OP has 4 pairings of student/teacher and their interactions are very wholesome, showing she can handle character interactions and those quiet moments that are the heart of the show. All of this is great, but it's just one side of all these characters. Avatar properties usually have these, but they also have a ton of action, betrayal, drama, sometimes even slapstick comedy, so OP could have benefitted from putting these characters in those type of scenarios. Or even have a villain design. What she has here are 8 hero esque protagonists, but no background characters that are one note like Cabagge man, no villains, or spirits which are a really important part in Avatar universe. My best guess is that the portfolio and person chosen had all the things OP had, but ALSO villains, spirits, maybe a bit of environmental design and so on. Sometimes is those type of things that give the portfolio an edge.
I don't know if this helps. Again I don't know the specifics of the project.

Not to sour the mood but as someone who’s going through college for animation and character concept design it really is astonishing how someone with your skill couldn’t make it to to the final cut. It puts in perspective how astronomically far I have to go before I’m really considered anything in the art industry BUT also inspiring because I can still see where I can get in terms of skill and storytelling.

@katl8825 I definitely agree. That was why I suggested an alternative path of a internship at DC or Marvel comics in order to improve Qrbit's action drawing skills. She would also benefit from creating a original webcomic with these characters with her own worldbuilding; it would help greatly with exploring the concepts she likes the most while also building up the necessary storytelling skills to create great animation storylines.

I really needed to hear that. I was an art class kid who failed to go to academia and ended uo studying art history and italian. I still draw and hope to make comics.
To everyone who is about to apply for art colleges don’t be sad if you won’t make it. Unlike ingeneering, medicine or other fields that really, REALLY need a degree art is something that we can now thankfully learn online. Still, fingers crossed.

If you got to the interview stage, then they liked the work presented in your portfolio. They don't have time to waste if they didn't love your work. The interview is to see if you, as a person, fit's into the goals of the studio/project. What do you bring to the table that only you bring? This can be non-art related too! Ask for feedback if you can, if this was your first interview, you're doing great!

These videos were beneficial to me as I will be applying for jobs and creating portfolios soon after finishing my bachelor's. To any other artists struggling with what avenue to take or what medium to focus on today, do what you love, nothing is set in stone. I changed from a painting emphasis to a new media emphasis. 3 years ago I had never touched 3D software but now love it as well as my 2D mediums. Focusing on one media does not mean leaving another behind. Acquire your tools for the tool belt.

I started college hoping to come out of it as a confident character designer like you, but.. unfortunately there wasn't 'character design' or 'anatomy' or even digital art classes- it was FINE art, and i developed skills like painting, ceramics and stupid graphic design stuff- my goal feels pretty much just as far away from me now as it did when i started school. Basically- I want to do this; my life dream is to be an illustrator/character designer. But my technical skills feel like their just scraping the surface? I feel your pain. I went back to uni wanting to be an animator and learn digital art, but due to not enough interest my Animation degree was cancelled after my first year and I had to transfer into the game design course. I've been doing a mish mash of game design, graphic design and web design, but my real interest is 2D animation which it seems no one is teaching in my city. I feel really lost. I'm probably only a year away from graduating, and I feel like I haven't really developed any of the skills I wanted to, so I've lost motivation and dropped out last year. I'd really like to finish the course just so I can call it done and move on but it's easier said than done. 😓

One class that helped me immensely was Knight Zhang’s class on Class101 - it goes into a lot of detail and really helped me develop an actual process for character designs. It’s also just a fun class so I’d really recommend it. Domestika also has a lot of classes which are super affordable (a lot range in the $20 range but the site runs frequent sales so I’d wait for those). Schoolism is another great choice. I’ve had trouble completing assignments on both domestika and schoolism since those are entirely self-driven. Class101 used to have a gamified points feature that extended class access which helped with motivation, but I believe they got rid of that now.
It also helped that I had no hobbies other than art up until the first few years of uni, but that’s not exactly healthy so I wouldn’t call it advice. Best of luck with your art journey!
Edit: I also meant to say that those other skills you learned in your program are absolutely transferable and can be valuable assets, so I hope you don’t feel too discouraged about that.

Heyo! Fellow art student here. I major in graphic design while my intrest is character design or comics.
What i have found out is that uni does litetally nothing to help you reach your goals in art. You wont be learning much of anything about what you really are intrested in.
If you want to follow a certain path in art, you have to learn it on your own following online artists and guides that are available. If there are no teachers that know your exact intrest, dont look for them. Try to be self tought instead.
Honestly, i feel like learning what you want alone is often way more effective than having a teacher who may not know your subject very well.

This will probably be controversial or a hot-take, but I genuinely feel like most character design skills are just, natural. You should have a natural sense of creativity and originality and a good eye for design (colors, balance, etc.) sure, maybe SOME of those things can be taught and learned, but I do genuinely think that the core underlying skills are internal.

Your videos really helped me get out of burn out. I currently have 2 weeks to finish up my portfolio for uni applications. Your video was very inspiring, and it helped me to have bit less chaotic workflow on my own portfolio and also to stop stressing so much over the amount of work i have on my plate. I'm really sorry you didn't get the job but know that you helped many people with sharing your work process. I hope new exciting job opportunities come your way soon.

i shouldve wrote this last video, but through the 4 duos, i love seeing the love for the water benders, the cuteness of the earth, the fun of the air, but my ABSOLUTE favorites were the firebenders!
They captured my heart with their relationship, ur first video showing the interactions page made me fall in love. The way they interact with each other is so incredibly beautiful, the way both the teacher and the student support and compliment each other.
It reminds me sm of girls supporting girls, their connection is so real and genuine, and its shown so amazingly throu just that 1 page
i just love them so mjchhhh

I really enjoy your art and content (even though I have only seen these 2 video's so var) I have always wanted to with animation and caracter desighn is a big factor in that so I have been trying to step out of my comfort zone and draw more people (side note: I only got my Ipad last december and that is my only digital drawing space). Anyway, I felt so called out when you started about thw fact that ao many teens dont know where to go and dont have a lot of artist friends, because its kindof relatable. The thing is, I have a lot of artist friends but I have no idea what the heck I want to do after my exams so I chose to just continue middle school but on a higher level. My dream is to be able to work on animations in any sort of way but I feel like I should start with drawing people. Anyway, your work is amazing, I (like may others) have been inspired and I wish you the best in life.

This video is really inspirational i had so many Concept story's that been in my mind marinating complete with storyline and world building & character development, though i never wrote and shared a story before it really surprised me how many artists (even professionals) can't even think of an idea i think im more of an art director than artist if i have a team i would most definitely came up with a somewhat good story
