  • Does Gordo even have a BACK to Backslash? Also, are there any moves that IGNORE the opponent's weight? And some other things! Very cool.
    I actually didn't go over many individual, different facts in this video -- it just happened that the ones I prepared were ones that I mostly wanted to go really in depth with. I think they're interesting enough to warrant it, though
    This game never ceases to amaze me, if you would've told me a few years ago that a series like this could last for potentially several years without getting stale (content-wise), I'd never believe you lmfao

    NEW PINNED COMMENT:
    I've seen a few people say that the reason why Lightning Buster ignores weight is because of its in-game "piercing" effect, which ignores the enemy's defenses in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. On its own, this seems reasonable and interesting, but there's a few reasons why I didn't think to mention this before and I still don't buy that it was intentional:
    The fact that Bowser's whirling fortress ALSO has this set weight feature, despite not (?) having any defense-piercing origin (or origin at all?) felt too weird
    Also, the fact that this aspect of Lightning Buster was simply never mentioned in advertising, despite all of the attention recent DLC get with their presentations
    But the BIGGEST reason, and the main takeaway here, is because... Lightning Buster isn't the only move in Smash whose origin has some sort of defense-ignoring property. A REALLY good example is also in Mythra's moveset. Sacred Arrow. Her final smash. This move ALSO has the "Pierce" effect in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Yet, looking at the game's script, this move has Set Weight turned OFF (for its entirety). I feel like, out of all the moves to include some unique property like "ignoring weight," it'd be the "big, crazy, unique" final smash, not the completely normal average neutral special, right?
    So, I can't REALLY say you're wrong if you think that it's an intentional reference to the move's defense-piercing ability. I just don't buy it, though.

      Sakurai designed Burning Sword as the low percent killer FS and Sacred Arrow as the damage dealer. If Sacred Arrow also could kill easily alongside it's massive damage output there'd be little reason to use Burning Sword.
      And about the set weight thing, the set weight to 100 gimmick is only for the mid-air versions and the fully charged ground version, the set weight effect does not happen if it's not fully charged on the ground.
      At no charge it kills Pichu easily at 200% centerstage, but if we just change characters to Cloud it barely kills, and to Bowser it doesn't kill under the same conditions.

      @@Dabestjoshy Guard-Annul refers to the block mechanic, Shulk's Monado Buster attack in XC2 has this effect listed, at level 5 it has a 100% chance to annul guards, which means it cannot be blocked whatsoever.
      The Pierce Defense effect pertains to the physical and ether defense stat which is attached to the player's blades, such as 10% Physical defense and 25% Ether defense. In that case physical attacks should be doing 10% less than the original damage, but if an attack has the Pierce defense effect linked to it those values are ignored, and the full damage is dealt, they can still be blocked if they don't have annul guard attached to them.
      In the main game of XC2, Lightning Buster is an Ether-based AOE attack that pierces defense, so the target's Ether defense value is useless, which allows the move to do full damage, the attack can still be blocked and have its damaged halved by random chance, but it's still extremely powerful regardless, especially with the 2.5 times damage at low HP.

    For a bit more info on Lightning Buster:
    In the original game, this move had a property to ignore Defense. I'm thinking it was done on purpose as a reference in that case with how it still has the same killing power no matter who, considering it ignores the "defense" aka weight. Just a fun fact.

    • @Ramen-ms9xn
      @Ramen-ms9xn 3 года назад +3

      @@soulfire67 I can prove it. If you look up the move's effects, it has a Pierce effect, meaning that any Defense that's calculated is ignored. You're not wrong about the damage buff on low HP
      taken from the wiki: "Increases damage dealt by 100%-150% when HP is 30% or less + 50% Critical Hit Modifier + Pierce"
      Photon Edge doesn't: "Increases damage dealt to toppled enemies by 100-150% + 25% Critical Hit Modifier"

      @@Ramen-ms9xn Oh I didn't know that. I played through XC2 recently and when I saw people mention the annul defence I didn't get what they were saying, since the Affinity Chart only says the increased damage bit. Nowhere does it say in game or in the wiki that LB has a pierce effect. And the Blade Special descriptions aren't helpful either.
      Meanwhile on the Affinity Chart, Photon Edge says that it's guard-annulling, which is why I thought it was that they were referring to.

This seems to be the only move that has this property, and what's really weird is that it also launches at an angle that can normally NEVER cause the spin animation. To make things even weirder, it will always put opponents into tumble ("knocks them down"), even if it does less knockback than would normally be required to do so (this can be seen by hitting Yoshi out of his double jump).

    I have a theory regarding why the gordo goes the direction it does when hit on the back with backslash
    most moves that hit characters force them to turn around to face the direction they were hit from. HOWEVER, backslash will leave the opponent facing away when you hit their back. Maybe the reason gordo flies backwards is because its not getting turned around, and it always flies away from the direction it's facing?

Same thing with items too, (I tested using hammer and home run bat). Also also, Olimars nair side tilt and up tilt also have this weird property.

    With the jump boost and jetpack stalling when you lose the bunny hood, this would be because of you're fall speed being reduced when you lose it!
    When you're jumping you still have the same upward momentum but your downward acceleration is reduced so you go higher, and with the jetpack this gets weird because the jetpack has a set fall speed, which the bunny hood tries to reduce to set back to normal when you lose it but since it was never increased it just goes really slow.

    Don't remember who, but there's a video about the front/back mechanic. How Link can shield items sent from opponents facing him, but items that are sent out by opponents facing the same direction as him when flying back (like a boomerang) will instead not be protected by the shield since the "back" if the items hits first and not the "front". There's a lot of weird stuff with that.

    6:50 The move you're using ALSO has independent weight knockback on the second hit, or at least on Roy. That's why I remember a Roy main using so frecuently N-air instead of F-air against LeoN's Bowser. Considering LOTS of features on the game, specially on DLCs, ARE intentional, this might have a reason to be, but I haven't played Xenoblade 2 so I don't know what exact reason it could be.

  • @ReitheOffbeatOtaku
    @ReitheOffbeatOtaku 3 года назад

    Random Smash 4 facts: Cloud's Finishing Touch also had weight-independent knockback in that game, and even though it would also use a set gravity and falling speed, those were only temporary, so Fox would still get KO'd after Bowser despite weighing way less. They changed it to simply deal normal knockback in Ultimate, and actually buffed that knockback overall, which I wouldn't have guessed just from looking at both games.
    The fact that they put that kind of knockback on a really strong kill move last game makes me suspect that it was an intentional choice to give it to Mythra this time around as well.
    ...I still can't say the same for the 2nd hit of Roy's neutral air, and that's in spite of it having this property in both games, lol.

  • @Zachruff

    Okay that fact about Lightnigh Buster is so cool! It's definitely intentional, because in Xenoblade 2, Lightning Buster pierces defenses, which means it always does the maximum damage, regardless of an enemies defense. They could have 5% damage reduction or 50% damage reduction, it doesn't matter. So cool! Can't explain why Whirling Fortress or Roy Nair have that though.

  • @alexstewart9592
    @alexstewart9592 3 года назад

    Lightning Buster ignoring weight would be deliberate. In XC2 the move has an unstated property called Pierce. Moves with this property ignore the target's defence stat (including buffs to defence and negative defence) but can still be blocked to halve damage (unless they also have the guard-annul effect, which IS stated unless it is on a level IV special, which don't list their effect at all (if they have one, a few don't)), and ignoring the target's weight is the Smash equivalent of that. It should be noted that this effect is present on most of Mythra's specials, including her rank IV Sacred Arrow.
    The only thing in XC2 that STATES presence of the pierce effect is a passive belonging to the OTHER light-element Blade obtainable without buying DLC. Everything else we only know has it because datamine.

    • @JoeThomas-lu6fy
      @JoeThomas-lu6fy 3 года назад

      Doesn't catalyst have an art that states the presence of the pierce effect? And there's a blade accessible after beating the game with the same passive.

    • @alexstewart9592
      @alexstewart9592 3 года назад

      @@JoeThomas-lu6fy Catalyst might but I NEVER use Catalyst, so I can't remember its Arts at all. I like using two of the Land of Challenge Blades on Nia, so I don't need it since that gives me Arts that do the same job.
      Transmigration's effect is NOT pierce. It INVERTS defence, which causes enemies that normally have a substantual amount to instead have massive negative defence and take even more damage than Pierce would, which is why it has a chance instead of always working and also doing somthing else.

    The reason that Mythra's Lightning Buster ignores weight is because in Xenoblade 2, Lightning Buster has a Pierce effect that ignores defense, which naturally is more effective when someone has high defense, like the heavier fighters (Bowser, etc.)

    I'm not sure if this is also true in Ultimate, but it in Smash 4, Cloud's Finishing Touch was weight independent and had a harsh vertical launch angle. This meant that Fox would do better at surviving Finishing Touch than Bowser due to his naturally high FALL SPEED.

    I think that the back of someone is not determined by where you hit them, but rather by their facing angle (in this game, it's either left or right, not counting z-axis). If you attack someone not facing you, it's counted as a "back hit".

I would assume that it's where he was when he launched it, but many years ago I assumed something similar about how damage falloff is calculated for soldier's rockets in tf2 and I was wrong then so I wonder still.
