I have always been straight but these guys more than probably anyone else, through their music helped give me insight into what it meant to be gay back in those unenlightened times & to change perceptions from what, as schoolkids in the seventies we had always been led to believe, that being gay was somehow weird or abnormal!! Bascally they made music I wanted to listen to & I listened & got the message loud & clear!! Since then really, I couldn't care less about a person's sexuality, something which is vey much their business & personal to them!! Hearing songs like this, Smalltown Boy & The Communards' Disenchanted now just makes me think what fabulous songs, without even having to think about the message behind them so job well done boys!!!
Remember this song so well; always loved Bronski Beat. Very courageous artist. For those who did not live in the 80's, it was GREAT, but there was some sad, serious s**t too: my own roommate told me to leave my coffee cup at the hospital where I worked as a nurse taking care of Aids victims, Ryan White's home being burned; horrific that some people turned into savages. Thanks for this,80's music was the Best!
That’s horrendous I didn’t know they tried to burn his house down! Awful how someone’s sexual preferences can cause such anger in other people it astounds me over and over again. Thanks lizb! When my great uncle died, we found a collection of his old Smash Hits magazines in the attic and I happened to read an article about Bronski Beat where they talked about this song. 30 years later, "gay bashing" still goes on but nobody brave enough to sing about it - so sad!

Jimmy Somerville was about two or three decades ahead of his time here. And he still sounds amazing today. What I like most about the song is the line "You and me together, fighting for our love" - it could be construed as either him singing to a lover, or him singing to his LGBT brothers and sisters.

This has great memories for me. Living in France when this was out. We had gone to a disco. There was a face painting competition which I won! We had a brilliant night dancing and on the way home there was an amazing electric storm. Such awesome sights.
