If you said "f----ing Jews" that would be antisemitic. Saying "f---ing Israel" is a crude critique of the country of Israel, which at best is currently perpetrating ethnic cleansing and at worst genocide. I would suggest that a substantial percentage of the UK population is on a spectrum of negative perception of Israel at the moment, ranging from 'they're over-reacting a bit' to 'they are committing genocide'. Surely the real scandal is that our government and leader of the opposition eithrr appears to be supporting Israel's actions, or failing to do anything about it.
You made this very easy and casual association with the two labour MPs and their comments with anti-Semitism. Yet, you made no comments or assessment on the facts beneath nor the policies behind those statements. Is it a default in Labour in the UK that any criticism of Israel or the war crimes and atrocities of the IDF are vorboten and immediately equivalent anti-Semitism.?
Just to clarify: the Portillo moment was notable because Portillo was seen as a fairly safe seat in the Major (and Thatcher's, before him) cabinet. He was so reviled specifically because he argued passionately in favour of the *exceptionally* unpopular Poll Tax. His unseating was remarkable because, just a few years before, he'd kept a majority of 15,000 votes. So it's referring to a massive seat being lost which signals a full change in momentum, and that when even safe seats are utterly demolished, the Tories will bleed. So to speak.
Ah so once again criticism of Israel = antisemitism...where is anyone able to lodge legitimate critiques of the Israeli government without being called out in this way?
I love that Pod Save the UK is a part of Crooked Media. I have learned so much that I know I would not have, otherwise. You're also very entertaining, and when we are dealing with so much insanity, in the world, that is very welcome. Thank you for what you do.
Pod Save the UK, LBC's Sangita Myska and James O'Brien, and Owen Jones here on YT are how I've gotten educated on UK politics and culture and learned how the Tories/RW there have been both copying and working with the right wing here. Also how much Russia interferes there as much as here
Excellent work Zelda Perkins. You are a brave survivor, thanks and appreciation to you 🙏🏼 I follow an online activist Alexa Nikolas who has protested in the states against NDAs, one she was forced to sign as part of her divorce settlement after she escaped the marriage by deception she was groomed into. So thank you. A very important cause. Thanks as always Pod save the U.K. favourite podcast atm.
When Nish made his children's violinist joke & Coco just went 'fucking hell Nish' into the mic I felt that in my bones. The tone of utter disappointment in someone you deeply love. Dying.
I used to get that when I worked in an Apple Store and people would ask about the iTouch and I suggested they might want to try the children’s version, the iTouch kids

Nish abandoning his wholey platonic friend Coco on Valentine's Day is arguably the greatest betrayal, far beyond anything that's happened in the world of politics. Perhaps even the world in general. Coco, time to get on. Pod Shag the UK and ditch that bum, you were too good for him anyway!
Btw, Nish getting to have dinner in NY and getting to watch Casablanca on the big screen is an amazing way to celebrate Valentine’s Day. He’s gotta tell us what he had for dinner! Pizza? Italian? One of their deli sandwiches?
Why are my comments being deleted when I try and talk about the Israel comments story? I don't understand why they are being punished for their comments.
I agree with you wholeheartedly. What I find utterly heartbreaking is the clear line being sold to us through mainstream media is “Islamophobia is preferable(in fact actively encouraged)over legitimate criticism of a far right fascist and possibly genocidal Israeli government”. I have lost a lot of faith in humanity
Keir remains deeply unpopular with the Labour base. Perhaps he would be better served in another party. For a human rights solicitor he lacks equity of humanity for all suffering. His image amongst Labour voters is not likely to improve either with trying to manipulate Asian communities to have a photo op with him. Labour should get another leader
You're on to something with The Stamp Collector. 90 minutes of Statham licking people would probably sell a lot of tickets. Some viewers might even retain their composure until the end of the movie. EDIT: Wait, Rees Mogg is still an MP? I thought he'd packed it in and shifted to being an out-of-touch ponce on radio instead of in Parliament. Maybe I'm just getting confused with him being relegated to the back benches.
Hang on, aren't people in the UK allowed to say what they want? I mean, one of the reasons people ran away from Hong Kong because they wanted free speech!
Ohh, sure, Coco has to come into the office, but Nish gets to call in! I see how it is! I don’t care that he “says he’s in NY”. Happy belated Valentine’s Day!
i mean if something's in the water, then those councillors ought to campaign for cleaner, greener treatment of water sources and pipes / filtration services. but no! they just want to not do their job. just trying to imagine myself blaming the water or the mothers if my boss asked me why i refused to serve customers or whatever...

Wonderful interview and I have little to add to the heart of the conversation. So my OT question is why wouldn’t factuality matter if she were already dead? It wouldn’t matter to her since she wouldn’t be around to deal with the inaccuracies, but it would matter to the rest of us…especially given how many people only ever learn about history through film.
Unfortunate hearing about her experience with the She Said film. I quite liked it when I watched it but totally respect how she feels about it. Probably can’t be easy to not have your story be told 100% truthfully especially like she said, (pun intended) given the irony of how it all started
For non-UK listeners, the Raving Loonies is not the Tories, it is an actual political party in the UK.

What a powerful and courageous role Zelda is taking now, well done! Great interview. ;)

Great interview with Zelda, really impressed with how clearly she explained the problem. More power to her.
As a lifelong human rights activist from the UK I can only say "Labour has no plans except for becoming 'Tory Lite'. Blood on your hands @Kier_Starmer

Yep, that was the realest moment I've ever heard on this podcast 😂

As a Chicagoan, my first thought was to wonder if a Portillo moment had anything to do with an Italian beef sandwich.
Ha! That was what Portillo made me think of, too. Now, I'm hungry.
Here in the UK it's all about Portaloos, which are not at all appetising...

Another great guest, another great week 👍
I think it’s not antisemitism, it’s anti Israel’s right wing party
Why are my comments being deleted when I try and talk about the Israel comments story? I don't understand why they are being punished for their comments.
Immediately ran to buy tickets for Nish in Brooklyn but they're sold out 😭 Hear my cry for additional dates!!
The sheer Islamophobia displayed by both shades of Tories, the blue and the red (under Starmer) is shocking.

Had to stop and have a dry laugh about HE and NDAs.
Gutted i missed the tickets for Nish's show in London. Pod viewers should get priority!
Appreciate your content. Thanks.

Happy belated Valentine’s Day!
Lawrence Block's Hit Man books have as a main character a hit man who collects stamps. It'd actually be a great role for Jason Statham!
In The Mood For Love is a masterpiece.
Reynolds is a billionaire. Surely he could spare 40k and pay for the work to be done?

Jason Statham in... The Collector! Stamp... collector.
Ooh, is this Coco’s first Wong Kar-wai film? I’d also recommend Fallen Angels by him too!
Im trying to not imagine a room full of bbc suits singing fukin hell nish in the musical version of his autobiography written by an AI version of Dennis Potter
Those “two movies” Coco and Nish suggested seem like the same movie. No reason why Coco’s movie suggestion isn’t about a guy who plays the violin... 😂

Talking about saving the cinema, have you noticed that what we call good films, Americans call 'foreign films'?
I agree Netanyahu knew
Also, what’s happened to Pod Shag the UK! PSUK! The “P” is silent! 😂
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
