- Hello! Today's project is classic the badger plane with intermittent boxing and the offset tote.
I need that tool to clean sides of side escapment planes.
For the body i choosed quartersawn beech. Why quartersawn? Because that material is the most stabile. That's all. As you probably noticed the sole is always oriented on the side where the bark was. Some people talk that the barks side of the wood is the hardest. Some people talk about wood movement during changing humidity. In that case the sole will get concave profile, wich is better than convex. In that reason the grain should be straight and parallel to the sole. Another people talk abour the wedge fitting during changin humidity, quartersawn wood keeps the wedge tight.
I am big fan of the second theory.
So, what's the materials??
- beech for the body
- spalted beech for the tote
- jasmine wood for boxing
- boiled linseed oil and shellac orange as finish
- an old laminated plane blade
The sole and the right side are free of shellac, they will work on the wood sufrace during planing.
The right edge of the sole will be the most loaded, so i choose intermittent boxing to make it more durable. The grain direction of the boxing is perpendicular to the sole.
Oh man, that a lot of words. I'm curious who read it ;)

Witajcie! Dzisiejszy projekt to klasyczny badger plane (taki duży kątnik) z przerywanym boxingiem i przesuniętym na prawo pochwytem.
Potrzebuję tego narzędzia do strugania boków strugów z bocznym wylotem stróżyn.
Na korpus wybrałem buk rdzeniowy. Dlaczego rdzeniowy? Ponieważ ten materiał jest najbardziej stabilny. To wszystko.
Jestem wielkim fanem drugiej teorii.
Ciekaw jestem, kto to przeczytał;)

I read it all
Hi there! I think I have seen you in the comments of David W before, so he needs no introduction to you (if I'm mistaken, look him up on youtube)
I asked him the question once about the end grain orientation with the suggestion to have the groth rings orientated vertical instead of horizontal, so it would be stable in the width of the blade and have no chance of pinching the blade
He respectfully disagreed, I quote his reply:
"Hi-the lateral movement is manageable (you just give the iron a little bit of room to move, or if things get tight, float out a little bit of material). You can make a plane with the wood turned 90 degrees from typical if you'd like, but the issue is that the durability between the rays is not very good, so the plane will wear much faster. You can smooth plane both faces of beech (the quartered face and the flatsawn face) and get a good idea how much more wear resistant it is on the bark side on the flatsawn face. It's pretty stark."
So his theory is about the resistance of the plane, and I agree with that personally
I'm glad to be watching your new videos again, you have an awsome workshop, with sunlight! Very nice
What is the role of the intermittent boxing??
Lots of us read all you write! Thanks!
I read it. Lol Good explanation.
Love the sound it makes at the end! Lovely tool
Thanks a lot :)
What's up black Smith 🐌
@ Torbjörn Åhman good seeing you here! 😎
I read the entire description. Thank you for explaining as much as you do; it really helps young up and coming tool makers such as myself. I love your builds!!
Best wishes, Stavros, to you and your family, from Roy the vintage Carpenter in England, I have a really nice Beach Badger plane made by Griffiths of Norwich, great video Stavros as always , I have restored hundreds of plane's and made a couple, I would love to get into making more, watching your videos it always amazes me, and makes me want to make more plane's .
Thank you Roy, all the best for you!
Your job is amazing, it seems easy, but it's the master level of carpentry
Dzięki Mariusz :)
Amazing, another work of art that is outstanding. The precision in execution is beyond comparison, and I learn something with each and every video I watch on this channel. It is a pleasure to watch Stavros work, true craftsmanship at its best.
Thanks a lot Tom! All the best for you :)
Those end grain shavings around 19:00 were astounding. Such skill, with each and every one of the huge variety of hand planes you use. I love watching you work.
Lot of different cuts with different angles, very difficult..... Like always, excellent work, 👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏
I've always liked geometry ;) thank you!
As long as I have been watching you make all these different planes I’m so relaxed when I watch you make them, thank you for your talent
You're welcome Keith :)
Sir... I have so much respect for your craft...and you. The west has nothing to compare, God bless !
Thank you very much!
Your work is absolutely beautiful. A plane like that is a piece of art!
Thank you for your support Josias :)
I read the description Stavros. Very nice
A true craftsman you are, excellent work, and the proof is in your shavings that came off of the plane at the end!
Nice fix! I agree about quartersawn wood still holding the blade with changes in moisture. The only thin that then changes is the angle of the blade. And only very slightly at that. Beautifull plane and nice to see a master at work...
I read the whole description . I agree with you ,I am a fan of the second theory of thinking.GREAT work ,I mean that .
Thanks a lot!
Thank you!
Zacnie! Brawo! 👍🏼
Dziękuję bardzo :)
I've been subscribed for a few months now. Your work and your videos are very inspiring. I'm also a big push over for making wood body planes so this project was something I watched for the pure joy of seeing a new finely crafted tool taking shape. Great work and very nice video.
Thank you Bruce :)
Man! Those shavings! Exquisite! Job exceptionally well done!
Those shavings after the boxing.....very nice work!
Thanks a lot! Cheers!
That iron is a beast! I've never seen such a huge skewed iron. Beautiful work as always! 😍
Hey, thanks a lot :)
Beautiful plane as usual mate so enjoy watching these builds👍👀
Thank you mate!
Nice drawing.
Sensacional bela plaina 🇧🇷🙏
Very nice
Good job
To be honest this wedge alone is already more complicated than anything I ever tried to make.
Gratulacje! Piekna robota (jak zawsze)!
Haha dzięki Nikos :)
I like it ❤️💗❤️💗❤️💗❤️💗❤️💗so much 👏👏👏👏👏
Stavros I believe that woodworkers of less caliber as I am love to see that people still make mistakes while working. For us it seems like professionals like yourself are human and we get to see how you fix them. The plane turned out great. Thanks for the content. Cheers
Thanks a lot Brad :) Cheers!
Another great practical work of art. Very good to see new postings too after a long gap. Please continue to provide us with inspiration.
Thank you Greg!
Dear Sir, It is a pleasure to watch you. You have feelings in your hands, you have knowledge and you have the will ... congratulations! Lp from Croatia/Pula
Thank you Goran!
Hi from Wales, excellent work a super tool, had to ask my Polish wife what was written on tin of the oil you were using! now I know a linseed oil base. I'm making a coach interior using Padauk and veneering panels of ply with lacewood, like you, the secret is razor sharp tools, część.
Thanks Simon:) Cheers!
Goethe'nin de dediği gibi;
"Elleriyle çalışan insan işçidir.
Elleri ve kafasıyla çalışan insan ustadır.
Elleri, kafası ve yüreğiyle çalışan insan sanatkardır."
Siz de tam bir sanatkarsınız.
Sevgilerle
Thank you Nuh! That was very kind :) Regards!
Very good!!!
Good JOB sir 👍👍👍👍👍🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩
I read it. That boxing info was exactly answer to the question I wish wondering. You know I've been to Poland and I think many polish people could speak english if they wanted to. Especially on your case since your written english is fluent. I encourage you to speak a little bit! :) Although I must say I like the sound of shavings and working.
Thank you! My english is "self-though" style, it's not so fluent as it should be but i'm still learning :) regards!
@@StavrosGakos I watched lot of your videos in recent days and few places where you spoke it was good enough! Best way to practise is to use the language :) You have nice and very different way of showing pieces slowly on camera. This would be perfect opportunity to speak a little
beautiful and functional tool made by a true craftsman! I have not heard of jasmine wood before, there's always something to learn from your videos.
Thanks a lot Ben! That was my first time with this wood. Regards!
That spalted beech is so pretty.
Oh wow I want one of those manual drill presses
You have made a good day - fantastic! Loved the build - and yes I read all the words, angles, etc.. Thank you for sharing your skills with us.
Thank you Karol!
Widzialem pare Panskich filmow . Poczytalem tez komentarze. Wszyscy mowia to samo. Robi Pan dziela sztuki. Te strugi powinny znalezc sie w muzeum techniki.
Zwykle maja najnowoczesniejsze maszyny , ostrzalki Tormek itd. A tutaj pomysl i nieslychana precyzja jest np. kluczem do nieprzepalonych ,ostrych jak brzytwa nozy. Pozdrawiam i zycze nowych projektow.
Dziękuję serdecznie :) Pozdrawiam!
A joy to behold . Thank you Sir !
You're welcome :)
Beautifuly made! Congratulations for your skills. Thank you
Thanks!
Beautiful work as always. I had never heard of a Badger Plane. I just spent some time reading all about it! Love the tote! And a special ‘Thanks’ for not having background music. In one part of the video we had a look at all the planes you made. Amazing! There were so many I thought you were in a store for a second!
Thank you Donna! I'm glad you like it :) regards!
I love your work every time i watch i'm amazed of how precise of a work you do, a precision that can make metalworkers blush
Thank you Roxan :)
Beautiful work Stavros, thanks! I'm going to go look up Jasmine Wood.
Thanks Philip!
all the compound skews make my head hurt. beautiful work though
Szacun pozdrawiam.
Dziękuję :) pozdrowienia
Great to see you're still making super planes and videos
Thanks a lot Mitch :) Sorry, i miss your comment. Merry christmast :)
fantastic you are the lord of planes
Thanks a lot!
Unbelievable that you have made something so stunningly beautiful
Thanks a lot Keith!
Beautiful plane, wonderful video. Thanks!
Thanks a lot!
Your tools are what we commonly refer to as…. ‘The dogs bollocks’
Bro you are amazing at making these planes. If my first one turns out half as good as yours I'll be doing alright.
Thanks a lot!
You have erased the line between art and craft by making a tool that is both beautiful to see and completely functional. I wonder how very few hands around the world would take the time and have the skill to do this. Thanks for sharing your talent.
Thank you Thomas :) all the best for you!
Dziękuję :)
What a lesson!!.... Wonderful Artwork!
Thank you!
So that was a great way to start my Monday, beautiful plane. I read the description untill the language changed to one i dont know. And I think having the sole concave would be better because it probably slows the progression from a fine mouth plane for joining/smoothing to a wide mouth plane for scrubbing down a good bit. I personally don't think the outer rings are any harder than the inner rings on a tree, i just agree with having the sole concave instead of convex makes more sense to me in the long run.
Thanks a lot :)
That’s a work of art!
Wow! Another beauty. Wonderful woods in that one a beautiful clean lines in the design.
Thank you Jim :)
This is just incredible, as always. Another beauty!
Thanks a lot!
It occurs to me, that every plane we spot in your videos is handcrafted by yourself. So - it's *plane breeds plane after plane* .
Thank you for sharing this. What an amazing effort, it is very inspirational. Thank you
Awesome plane!! Thank you for sharing...
WOW... no coment...gold hands. Have a nice day.
Thanks Jiri! Have a nice day :)
Wow. Another masterpiece. Excellent work.
Thank you Lynn!
It would be great if you make a tutorial on how to create a traditional tenon saw handle, thank you for sharing all your amazing work with the world.
A good tool and a piece of art 👏👏👏👏
If I had half the skill you do, I would try my hand at making planes!
You can try it without any skills, they will come with everyone project, regards:)
If you have half the skills he has, you'll make planes the half good that he makes. Until you become as good as him. :)
@@Cabeza492 Practice, my friend, practice!
So beautiful
Amazing 🤯🤯🤯😱😱👍👍👍👍👍👍🙂
Nice!
Its a fabulous project looks magnificent and its works too. Well done
Thank you Bernie!
What a beauty she is! Congratulations Stavros.
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmast :)
Simply beautiful.
that slice you took off the handle is just a few steps away from a really cool handle pattern.
Muy buen trabajo!! ...exelente video🖕
Beautiful work as always
Dziękuję Oleg :)
Very good 👍 information Thanks brother 👍
so jealous of your skill. thanks for the video
Thanks Scott!
Been standing in my shop, clicking my fingers for an hour!
How long until plane appears?!
Hahaha there is no rule, keep trying ;)
read everything and enjoyed every sec! thanks Stavros!
Great work, like your hand planes 🥰
Thanks a lot :)
Another excellent job, thanks, I will have to start one soon,
Thank you Pauline! Good luck :)
Thank you very much! Regards!
I would be fascinated to hear how you calculated the angles for the skew and the bed to get the plane edge situated correctly. It is a subtle but impressive achievement.
Thanks, i didn't calculate it, i just drew the lines on the wooden blank 👍
You do such beautiful work and they work so well! Congrats. You are a master of your work.
Thanks a lot!
Robota jak zwykle klasa, a strug piękny.
Dziękuję Paweł!
super 👌
Beautiful as always
Thank you Ray!
Dziękuję!
That was masterful lad! Absolutely brilliant!!
hello! A właściwie cześć!
Angielski rozumie znaczna większość, a milczenie wszyscy :) pozdrowienia!
Perfect bro 👍👍 thanks for don't use electronic toll.
Wow. Just wow. What a beast!
Thank you David!
Linda demais 👏🇧🇷🙏 parabéns
The sound is music to the ears
Love your yellow door lol
