  • I made a new shooting board ( • Making a Shooting Boar... ) and decided to make a wooden miter plane to go with it. Also known as a "strike block plane," this wooden hand plane is based on an 18th century design, but made with Krenov style construction. I give making hand planes 5 out of 5 stars.

      Making and Mastering Hand Planes by David Finck is a fantastic book to get. I should have read that first. There is a ton of nuance that goes into making the laminated ones.

      @@EricMeyerMaker Hi Eric, art and crafts are God gifts we are all His creations, putting us together He sometimes, if He likes, will take a pinch from His special box and mix it along which makes someone very special. Take the example of Michelangelo he had more than a pinch rather a handful of that special gift but what is this gift... perfect coordination of mind, eyes and hands....and there is David in full glory. Other will make a copy in plastic but the difference can never be removed. This Polish guy also that special gift from God. Enjoy his videos, best wishes and regards.

    How do you decide whether to joint/plane by machine vs by hand?

    • @EricMeyerMaker
      @EricMeyerMaker  4 месяца назад +2

      If the board is wider than the jointer or real short I'll do it by hand. Same, if I only have a couple of boards to do. If I have a lot of boards to run I'll do it on the jointer. Lately, I've been doing all my jointing by hand. I moved the jointer out of the shop because I ran out of room. It is more of a hassle setting it up than to do it all manually.

    Looks great, Thanks. After having used a gauge for cap iron screw clearance , do you recommend an auger ? Or isn't the angle of approach conducive to the use of such tools ?

    • @EricMeyerMaker
      @EricMeyerMaker  Год назад

      I didn't even think about the auger. There would have been enough clearance and it would have made getting a round edge easier.

    What is the bed angle of that plane? Thanks.

    • @EricMeyerMaker
      @EricMeyerMaker  20 дней назад

      It's a low angle plane. If I'm remembering correctly, it is around 37 degrees.

    Hello. What glue do you use?👍👍👍👍👍

    • @EricMeyerMaker
      @EricMeyerMaker  Год назад +2

      In this video it looks like I was using Titebond 2.
      Lately, I've been using white PVA glue. I think the dried color is a bit more invisible. My local hardware store stocks Elmer's.
      I also like Old Brown Glue Liquid Hide Glue.

      Lockwood water based medium yellow. That was followed by a brown glaze.

    You would love a 5-1/2 Woodriver or Lie-Nielsen plane. That thing you used at the beginning was painful to watch. Doesn't matter how much you spent on it, far too much skipping and chattering before you got close to dialing in the surface. It should be an enjoyable journey, that looked like a "can't wait til it's over" moment.

    • @EricMeyerMaker

      5.5 Woodriver or LN..... you must be from the Rob fan club 🤔😂 LN is jus an overpriced standard plane with some polish on it. Woodriver is a Chinese clone of the previous plane, minus some brass/bronze and bling.
      Get yourself some Veritas planes, those are the true innovators in plane making, they're absolute work horses 🤙
