In terms of the progress of the character, one has to wonder about 13. The PC controversy aside, HAS the Doctor grown? Unlike 9-12, 13 seems to suppress any discussion about the Time Lords, or the 2000 or so year history of the Doctor to the companions. Is sharing less, and withholding more from 'best friends' a sign of growth in a person? Or is the Doctor more repressed than ever, but using a happy face female shell as a cover?
rsmllc2 Interesting. I saw it more that 13 genuinely has moved past the need to dwell on the past. Remember, 12 was so world weary by the end that he didn’t want to regenerate at all. He wanted it to end. But he resolved to continue. To ‘get it right’ and start completely fresh. I think that’s why 13 seems a bit bland in comparison. However, that dramatic tension due to the Time War/survivor guilt/existential angst is a Nu-Who construct. That it’s gone now fits with direction the series has taken so far, as in many ways it’s a step back to Classic Who. Less emotion, just adventures and semi-educational time travel. Series 12 trailer looks to have fixed the problems with that. As it seems to be more exciting, emotional and story-arc based.
9th doctor (0:00): "I am alone. I am in pain. I'm trying to bring myself out of this hole I'm in but I'm constantly dragged down by them." Loss, regret. Mourning. Just traveling on, lost and roaming. Trying to call out but feeling so alone. Pain. Loneliness. The wandering of the voice's pitch, a single voice with a bit of echo behind it, signifying the past. Slowly, you begin to hear background noises. The universe moving on, existing, and a lone survivor being pulled each direction, as you can see by the changing of the pitch. 10th doctor (01:13): "Listen to me, I've returned to you universe. I am important, your protector, grand and righteous. I am dangerous, burdened, and in pain, but I will run, and help people. I will explore and do good even though I am not good." Importance. The loneliness has turned from pain into a kinder, still war torn feeling. The universe is finally united with the doctor, the grand sense of being he's always had has returned, and he's thrown into wonder and adventure once again. The doctor stops being the half-doctor half-warrior, and starts with something new, something dangerous and beautiful. As you could see, the voices at the start weren't just one. Either a Gallifreyan choir, making sure their legacies are being seen through by the doctor, or the universes people calling to him, knowing that he is the dangerous thing, but the warrior for the light too. 11th doctor (03:41): "I'm running, and holding myself in adventure. The whimsical thing are above the surface of the constant danger and regret, but I love the feeling of the adventure so I run with that." Running. Danger. Enjoyment. Getting lost in the adventure. The time ticking down. Adrenaline rushing. A sense of fun. Whimsical danger, getting lost in the running, running, running. Building back up over and over again. No matter how many times he tries to keep himself from the danger he know's he belongs there, and he's glad for it. The ticking signifies danger and adrenaline. The horns signify the doctor. The choir shows his grandness, his legacy, a reminder he both carries and runs from. The choir fades out to the theme that means "running". Soon a lighter, more "ballroom" theme starts, that's the beauty of the adventure. But then the running theme starts up, and it means danger. 12th doctor (7:42): "I'm older, wiser, there's danger here and I know it. I'm facing myself, my worst fears, all with the adrenaline rushing and the stakes going higher and higher." Wiser. Older. Knowing the danger. Higher stakes, a grand adventure. It's not just fun anymore, the danger has been fully recognized. But the whimsical things never leave. Life is beautiful but dangerous. The jabbing notes are the danger. The atmospheric humming is the beauty. The horns are the grandness, the burden. Daredevil. Not backing away. Facing yourself. Running, but embracing the darkness that's involved with it. Promising, working to be better. 13th doctor (13:00): "I am loving, I am kind. I'm letting go of what was once there, trying to embrace the goodness in me and showing the beauty of the universe. Happiness and enjoyment, exuberance. Acceptance." The voice in nines theme has turned from mourning to loving and warm. Filled with mystery, but kindness, empathy. The atmospheric tones show the beauty of the universe. Before it was mourning, now it it alive with love. (I personally think it's meant to be the same voice as in nine's theme, just changed with love) The exploration of goodness, love. The notes that repeat, (the middle note, middle-high note, middle note again, even higher note, middle high note, then dragging out the middle note) signify the underlying sadness, but the beauty and wonder and love finally tops it almost completely, and it's left to sit there, somber. When it kicks up, the happiness and joy is shone and the wonder and beauty is elevated even more.
It reminds me of the thematic transition near the end of “Amy in the TARDIS” from the season 5 soundtrack, how the theme just smoothly transitions and slowly swells it’s epic
In my mind, 10's theme is "the Doctor reminisces on his long life, probably somehow related to the nature of time." 11's is "this situation looks impossible, but if you trust me as I do something unexpected and dangerous then we'll be fine." 12's is "hang on a second; it just occured to me that I've already won. Have you not caught up yet? Allow me to explain."
9/10 will always be the theme to me. When you think of how old the Doctor is and the immense weight of the countless loss they've endured in that time, it fits perfectly. The hero despite the losing battle that never ends.
I just watched the episode where capaldi regenerated to Jodie, and during that scene the 9th doctor's theme played, and I think that it might be symbolising the doctor letting go of her regrets.
Wasn't there a medley of many themes during the regeneration scene as a sort of swan song from Murray? I don't remember the specifics (without a recent re-watch) but I do remember that the music struck me as being familiar and also awesome as it built up to Twelves final moments.
The music that plays during Twelve's last speech just before he regenerates was 'Breaking the Wall' that played back in Heaven Sent. But yes, the first bit of music we get once Thirteen appears is indeed Nine's theme!

@@callumw1597 I found the asshat who just _had_ to ruin this comment. 13 isn't bad herself; Whittaker is an amazing actress but Chris Chibnall has completely forbidden her from looking at past material and performances and gives her shitty scripts, she's trying her best as an actress to do her job but usually a crappy character comes down to bad writing, take Anakin for example, George Lucas couldn't write good scripts and made Star Wars really shit in the prequels and who got the hate? Hayden Christensen; it's the same thing over and over. Jodie could be a great Doctor but Chibnall is a shit writer and pales in comparison to RTD and Steven Moffat, Chibnall tries his best to even give her Moffat-style speeches and they're shit _-on top of the fact that Chibnall just retconned almost 60 years of the show with the timeless child which we will choose to ignore for good measure-_ so yeah. All in all Jodie isn't a bad actress as much as Chris Chibnall is a shit writer

Every Doctor Who theme just gives away so much empathy. 😔😔 That’s what I love about Doctor Who. 9 gives away sadness. 10 gives us regret, but then gives us a feeling of learning from our regret in the second half of the song. 11 gives us a feeling of pride. 12 gives away determination to do something. To be something. 13 has a feeling of loss, then shows that there’s always hope when you just think about it. Edit: Hey, I just came back to this comment. It’s nice to see that people have taste.
11ths theme is so iconic. It just gives a feeling like something amazing is about to happen, and adds to any scene the doctors in. Its just incredible.
I still think the 11ths docs theme is best. Awesome all the way through and still gives me chills to this day. Makes me feel like anything is possible when I hear it.
Anything, yet it was supposed to be the coda, the end of his lives, so he's trying to keep going, avoiding it yet resigned to it at the end. Luckily for us he got called back for some encores!
The 11th doctor's theme is what I think of when I think "doctor who" probably because he was my first doctor and that music shaped my early teens... Good stuff
Lunay Çelik because you were listening to this, you were able to conjure the doctors spirit and come up with a brilliant plan to live and you save yourself with mere moments left to spare
I love them all, but 11 will always be my Doctor. I started with him, and he was a friend to me when I needed one so desperately. He quite literally saved my life so I will always remember when the Doctor was him.💙💙
Not my fav doc but I like all except Jodie's since I only saw 1 of her episodes so far so it wouldn't be fair to judge her on that, my fav's are 9(started on him), 10 and 12. But in themes, all five
Honestly, this is how I seethe Doctors' themes: 9th Doctor Theme: The mystery of the Doctor 10th Doctor Theme: The journey of the Doctor 11th Doctor Theme: The spirit of the Doctor 12th Doctor Theme: The question of the Doctor 13th Doctor Theme: The beauty of the Doctor
3:17-3:32 is the most recognizable music piece for the doctor in my opinion, it is definitely the most satisfying chord i’ve ever heard and always makes me feel happy when i listen to any version of it played. i remember rewinding the episode i was on if i heard it, especially during 10’s era, even when i heard it once or twice during 11’s. these few notes make me feel more epic and upbeat than anything every could, this is THE best doctor who music made
You were fantastic, and yknow what? so was I. I could do so much more, I don’t want to go I’ll always remember when the doctor was me *after much internal struggle* Above all else, run fast, laugh hard, and be kind. doctor...i let you go
11th has such a perfect theme! Such a child full of history, heavy and full of duty but at the heart of it it's still light-hearted with all the heartache
The Shepherds Boy theme is a slower rendition of the "This time there's Three of us" theme from the Day of the Doctor 50th Anniversary with the 11th and 12th doctor.
9th- Isolation- (The Parting of Ways) 10th- Anger- (End of Time) 11th- Bargaining (The Time of the Doctor) 12th- Depression (The Doctor Falls) 13th- Acceptance (The Woman Who Fell to Earth)
First thoughts I had when each theme started: "I'm the Doctor nice to meet you, now run for your life" "You and me River! One last time" "Basically....Run" "You'll find the universe is a small place when I'm cross with you" "I'm giving you the chance to walk away"
Twelve’s Theme “A Good Man?” may well be one of the greatest pieces of Doctor Who music written by Murray Gold. It is thoroughly melodic, punctuated by the right amounts of percussion and layered beautifully with so many different instruments. It’s a shame MARVEL STUDIOS never approached Murray for composing music to their films. I can only imagine what wonders he would’ve brought to the MCU.
I love how they dont play the young doctor or the old doctor, the male or female doctor. They just play the Doctor. Period. And they all do. In different ways but there's always that detectable spark in all their eyes in all their voices when they act and decide and just do. It's just that they are the Doctor. That's who they are and what they do.
My favourite is 11’s theme; it really makes me think HE IS THE DOCTOR! He’s always my Doctor, that’s for sure. But 9 and 10’s are so beautiful. 12th is so Doctorish too! 13 is... different. Nice tune just no Doctor vibes - maybe it’s because I don’t understand this new doctor yet
I may have negative opinions on the Chibnal Era, but 13's theme stands up well to Murray Gold, and is probably one of my favourite pieces of music ever, that renewed feeling of hope after the end of the battle
@LittleRedRhuari RRR yeah I know it's not his main theme but it is still classed as one of his themes and one of the best pieces of music from murray gold I all so like all the strange strange creatures' the song of freedom, and the long song also examples of themes that arnt official "doctor" themes but they are still amazing and would be great to hear them all together in a musical ensemble for the doctor
@LittleRedRhuari RRR Yes indo know that I'm just saying somebody should do a video with all the doctors themes main themes and secondary themes it would be nice to listen to that's all This is great too I'm not saying it isn't because it is but what I'm saying is I'd like to hear a piece with every theme related To the doctor
I think Series 11 is like Series 1 in a lot of ways. It's less plot heavy than previous series and is a proper jumping on point for new fans like Series 1 was.
Murray Gold will forever be one of the best Composers in Television, was really sad to see him go (He can’t be replaced tbh). His music was just so “Who-y”.Would like to seem him make maybe a return for the anniversary or something though or...
9th Theme: Sad/Mourning 10th Theme: Rising up but still some Sadness/Regret mixed with it 11th Theme: Coming out, to play, explore and just have fun 12th Theme: Heroic (thats all im gonna say) 13th Theme: Rising up, getting reborn, with a new oppurtunity of Journey and exploration

It's incredible how they all sound SO powerful, but all in different ways. And I agree 100% that between 9's theme and 13's theme it feels like the music has told a story all of its own
I grew up with Nine and Ten, and while David Tennant is more my 'Iconic Doctor', I will always have a huge soft spot for Christopher Eccleston's portrayal. It took a while for me to get used to Matt Smith, but I learned to appreciate his sense of fun. Peter Capaldi grew on me faster, even though Twelve can be kinda unlikable, IMO. Jodie Whittaker has kind of a Tennant/Smith mix going on which I dig, but I feel the way she is written lets her down; too kid-friendly for my liking (I know it's kind of a kids' show)
I do like all the Doctor's themes, 11 and 12 always remind of the Doctor about to kick into action with something super clever, but 9 and 13 are my favourites; 9 is just so hauntingly beautiful but tends to make me cry 😭 and 13's is just damn awesome!

However that calm might just vanish, the new season of doctor who isn't messing around and the 13th doctor is very angry

@@alpersenturk1420 Doesn't mean he isn't underrated (especially by casual fans)
That transition from 10 to 11 gives me goosebumps man
9th doctor (0:00): "I am alone. I am in pain. I'm trying to bring myself out of this hole I'm in but I'm constantly dragged down by them."
Loss, regret.
I will explore and do good even though I am not good."
Importance.
The whimsical thing are above the surface of the constant danger and regret, but I love the feeling of the adventure so I run with that."
Running. Danger.
I'm facing myself, my worst fears, all with the adrenaline rushing and the stakes going higher and higher."
Wiser.
Acceptance."
The voice in nines theme has turned from mourning to loving and warm. Filled with mystery, but kindness, empathy. The atmospheric tones show the beauty of the universe. Before it was mourning, now it it alive with love.
(I personally think it's meant to be the same voice as in nine's theme, just changed with love)
The exploration of goodness, love.

11th's theme is my favorite when I'm happy
12th's theme is my favorite when I'm determined
In my mind, 10's theme is "the Doctor reminisces on his long life, probably somehow related to the nature of time."
11's is "this situation looks impossible, but if you trust me as I do something unexpected and dangerous then we'll be fine."
12's is "hang on a second; it just occured to me that I've already won. Have you not caught up yet? Allow me to explain."

9/10 will always be the theme to me. When you think of how old the Doctor is and the immense weight of the countless loss they've endured in that time, it fits perfectly.
The hero despite the losing battle that never ends.
yep. only those two give me the feeling of how much weight the Doctor feels on his shoulders, despite not trying to show it
I just watched the episode where capaldi regenerated to Jodie, and during that scene the 9th doctor's theme played, and I think that it might be symbolising the doctor letting go of her regrets.
There's a mix of 9-12 themes all the way throughout the episode. Like when the doctor of war is shown to First, 11s theme is playing
Honestly I thought it symbolized a return of the northern accent but sure regrets and stuff too

9 gives away sadness.
10 gives us regret, but then gives us a feeling of learning from our regret in the second half of the song.
11 gives us a feeling of pride.
12 gives away determination to do something. To be something.

I would have chosen "The Majestic Tale (of An Idiot With A Box)"
I consider Breaking the Wall/The Shepherd's Boy as his secondary theme, like A Madman With A Box for 11th
C-7007 Yeah because A Good Man? Was played very often throughout each series.
The Shepherds Boy theme is a slower rendition of the "This time there's Three of us" theme from the Day of the Doctor 50th Anniversary with the 11th and 12th doctor.
This blends together so perfectly, I’m in awe. You can practically see the Doctor's character arc by listening to this.

10th- Anger- (End of Time)
11th- Bargaining (The Time of the Doctor)
12th- Depression (The Doctor Falls)
13th- Acceptance (The Woman Who Fell to Earth)
13th is truly acceptance when her last words in Power of the Doctor are
“Doctor whoever I’m about to be… Tag, you’re it!”
I mean massive kudos to Murray Gold and Segun Akanola for these amazing OSTs
First thoughts I had when each theme started:
"I'm the Doctor nice to meet you, now run for your life"
"You and me River! One last time"
"Basically....Run"
"You'll find the universe is a small place when I'm cross with you"
"I'm giving you the chance to walk away"
Twelve’s Theme “A Good Man?” may well be one of the greatest pieces of Doctor Who music written by Murray Gold. It is thoroughly melodic, punctuated by the right amounts of percussion and layered beautifully with so many different instruments. It’s a shame MARVEL STUDIOS never approached Murray for composing music to their films. I can only imagine what wonders he would’ve brought to the MCU.
Head and shoulders above the others for sure...
