This game changed me. I was crying like a baby when I played it. I absolutely love it and i doubt I will ever be touched like that ever again by any other. It was truly epic to play it. I still until this day think about it now and then. So many feelings... Wow!
One of the coolest fucking intros ever to a video game, I loved this game. This game was my life back when I was like 14, I played it everyday. I loved every aspect about it. It was amazing, I get very nostalgic when watching this, and it all started with this badass video.
Best. Intro. Ever. I got a demo of Xenogears with another Square game Way Back Then, I don't even remember which one it was, and once I saw the intro I KNEW I had to get the game. Major obsession for YEARS. Been some time since I last played it, makes me all nostalgic to watch this. =o

@MasterInzaghi yeah, you are right! This game took away about 250 h from my life(I have played it about 5 times) and I don't regret it. It' so epic, so great characters(i like Krelian the most). The plot is astonishing, very mature and deep..and the music!! Greetings from Poland(sorry for my bad english)
Heh. I remember that one of my first assembly programs during college ended up being a 255 count loop printout of "You shall be as gods. ". I could've even made it work as in the video but that was way beyond my x86 assembly-fu.
Not really, that's a bit of a misconception. Takahashi and Saga pitched their story for FFVII, but Sakaguchi rejected it because he thought it was too dark. FFVII was never going to take "Xenogears" direction. However, it's clear that Sakaguchi saw potential in the story, that's why he green lighted this other game instead.
One of the best RPGs of all time. Square Enix (squaresoft at the time) really screwed the pooch on this one by not continuing the series. They pulled the funding from the Xenogears team and was told to hurry up with the project. Thats why the 2nd disk was created with so many cut scenes instead of more gameplay.
I was a kid in grade school, sick with bronchitis and out for a week when my dad brought this home. It was the best week of my life. 20 years later, I still pull out the PS1 to play this game every now and then. For me, it's possibly the greatest RPG of all time.
Proud to say I own a non-greatest hits version of this game. It is one of the greatest rpg's ever and a really great story! It brings happy to my face thinking about this game :)
The eldrige, if I recall correctly, was commissioned as a colony ship whos initial mission was to dispose of the Interplanetary invasion weapon Deus. Who had gone rampant destroying countless worlds. While en route Deus woke up and learned what they planned to do. so it tried to take over the ship and set a course for the home world. basically Deus said "Oh no you didn't!" and grabbed the steering wheel to make a U turn back home, but instead got severely injured in the self destruction
The dev team is now known as Monolith Soft and are actually working on a new Xeno title. It's mostly likely not a Xenogears remake or directly related, but it seems loosely based on it.
I don't doubt they are good games. It seems very odd to mention the Ys series in a post about the storytelling in Xenogears. I've seen a lot of lists of best stories in games, and don't recall Ys being anywhere near the top of any of those.
You keep saying "here". And honestly I don't care where you are, you are being ethnocentric. Even a serviceable translation, which I'm sure Ys receives, would be on "international lists" if it truly had a noteworthy story. And yet you are saying it is above the storytelling found in Xenogears... based on.... what? Care to send some reviews in whatever language you are from that put it's story at such a high tier? Or lists from where you are? Honestly, think you're just trolling.
I remember my brother buying this when it was released ten years ago, but he only got as far as barely half of disc1. I came around to playing it three years later, when I was out of school...and it took me at least four months to finish it. So engrossing. If I remember it well, this was set several millenia into the future.
I like how long this game is. I just played it for the first time on ps3, and after Solaris I found out their was a disk 2 after playing 45 hours. That made me very happy :)
this is and i think always will be my favorite rpg of all time. Its a bloody shame more people didnt give it a chance. It hardly had any publicity, and i think it far outweighs 99% of the rpg's ive played over the years.
I remember this!! I never got a chance to play it, but a good YT buddy of mine said it's AWESOME!! I mainly remember the ad for Xenogears in a magazine. It had the epic quote, "Stand tall, shake the Heavens!
yeah is true i have played a lot of rpgs in that time and only two really captivate me and those games are wild arms and xenogears the story of these two games are legend makers!!
Xenogears has a storyline that is unrivaled by ANY sifi plot in the whole entire world. Not even a movie like Star Wars can hold a torch to the brilliance of Xenogears. It is simply the best ever created.
@Cleancutchaos I had the same happen to me. Played the game as a kid and didn't really get a lot of the philosophical and religious overtones. I replayed the game recently and it blew me away. Made me think about life in a different way and changed me as a person. Xenogears is not a game, it's an experience.
Here are my favorites: Genesis of mankind explained through disaster, similarly structured control rooms to prevent alien invasion, effect of a secret relic embodied in a mecha that forces the pilot to undergo a Freudian analysis, fitting in with people who think you've hurt them with your machine (when you actually tried to save them, similarities between Dan and Toji); then you get further in the game and it's even more apparent with Solaris's ministry and Krelian's endgame plans.
only thing i know that xenosaga follows after xenogears because abel began to exist after eldridge crash but appears in xenosaga which means its kinda either after it or in the time miang was trying to take over the world xenosaga happened
Xenosaga is the prequel series of games leading up to Xenogears. It goes into detail of how and why the Eldrich ship crashed on Earth, The history of the Zohar, and Weltall. The Xeosaga games were pretty good but they were more story than game play. If you are interested in the story they are definitely good games.
This is still my favorite game opening of all time. Xenogears is "book 5" but then I don't like to think of Xenogears as part of the Xenosaga game series. Xenogears is in a different realm of awesome altogether (Xenosaga's not too bad though). The track that plays throughtout this opening is "Light from the netherworlds"
completly agree with you, those were great PSX RPG times, FF7,FF8, xenogears, FFtactics, valkirye profile, chrono cross, etc, SNES rpg era was also great :)
Anyone ever notice how the red text on the monitors after the captain calls the engine room is "You shall be as gods" happens to be the same as Shion's password "Ye shall be as gods"? or maybe it was "Like gods" ;p
Yes it was! Almost anything in anime takes inspiration from something precedent. In terms of plot I'd say they are (arguable) still similar, but as you say it's primarily rooted in themes and design. A lot of people didn't like Eva (it's one of the most polarizing franchises I'm aware of) - the classic RahXephon vs. Evangelion discussion is a good example of your last point. I've never seen ANY anime series I've liked more than it, but this all comes down to what you're looking for and like.
This game is one of the most beautiful, deep, and greatest experiences that I ever had in gaming. It's also living proof the Square isn't what it used to be. Basically, anyone can play Final Fantasy, but REAL men play Xenogears.
"I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last." Getting both this and FFVII as my first two PS1 games at the same time, I suppose that there were various reasons as to why this game appealed to me over VII at the time. But above all, that intro blew my mind when I was younger. I am just a little upset that my sister lost the instruction booklet to the game + case. But as long as the game still works, I am satisfied.
@Raminess I honestly dont remember how or when i got this game but it was many years ago. took a little to get into and forever to fully understand the mechanics but this is def in my top 5 games ever played. still struggle on the story but i plan on playing it over winter break again
Fun fact: Many believe this scene to happen a few hundred (or thousand) years after Xenosaga III - after the Gnosis conflict, the few states that weren't wiped out eventually commissioned the Eldridge to find a new home with new resources. Deus seems to be gear-esque because it was constructed by man during this period as part of the Interplanetary Invasion Mechanism, perhaps from the remains of KOS-MOS. This explains Deus's violent reaction with the Zohar and Abel's presence on the Eldridge!
Because Dues is a Gnosis terraforming bio weapon, created by the Federation that Momo helped at the end of Saga 3, there I spoiled it for everyone it needed to be cleared.
Final Fantasy VII is a great game.
Xenogears is a life altering experience.
At least, in my humble opinion.
Agreed.
At some point this game was planned as Final Fantasy VII, but was cancelled because of dark and confusing plot.
I lost faith in religion, the media, human history, after playing this as a kid.
really life-altering experience.
This game changed me. I was crying like a baby when I played it. I absolutely love it and i doubt I will ever be touched like that ever again by any other. It was truly epic to play it. I still until this day think about it now and then. So many feelings... Wow!
Still my holy grail of RPGs.
Indeed
Lol i cant count how many times i have watched the intro and it still amazes me today, mecha airships great story...this game has it all, awesome!
One of the coolest fucking intros ever to a video game, I loved this game. This game was my life back when I was like 14, I played it everyday. I loved every aspect about it. It was amazing, I get very nostalgic when watching this, and it all started with this badass video.
When you understand everything after playing the game...
Best. Intro. Ever. I got a demo of Xenogears with another Square game Way Back Then, I don't even remember which one it was, and once I saw the intro I KNEW I had to get the game. Major obsession for YEARS. Been some time since I last played it, makes me all nostalgic to watch this. =o
The best game of all time. The greatest story ever told.
Hellblazer311 It really is. It's a shame that so few people recognize that.
Agreed.
Like a true Captain he sacrificed himself and went down with his ship.

Best game I ever played in my life... I still play it today and the story grabs me EVERY time.... I thank you for giving me this game Squaresoft.

Xenogears is so amazing, so underappreciated.
RIP squaresoft.
Monolith Soft is alive.
To think the story of Xenogears was originally gonna be FFVII.
However we all know how that turned out, and still both games kickass to this day.
4:38 small two of pieces plays and you can see 2 starlights in the distance falling, chills!

I want to salute the hell out of that captain every time I watched this.
It has been forgotten, time goes by
I was a kid in grade school, sick with bronchitis and out for a week when my dad brought this home. It was the best week of my life. 20 years later, I still pull out the PS1 to play this game every now and then. For me, it's possibly the greatest RPG of all time.
I just finished the game. Wow...
It's amazing this intro is about 15000 years prior to the game.
At 3:33 I heard a couple communicators and a door chime from Star Trek The Next Generation
One of the animators worked in Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell, that's why
Proud to say I own a non-greatest hits version of this game. It is one of the greatest rpg's ever and a really great story! It brings happy to my face thinking about this game :)
Just got this game for $4.99 at the local Goodwill. Nice.

Oh man I've played it on the old PS1, now I'm playing Xenosaga and I don't remember a thing from Xenogears =/
The best story in games...loved both playing and just watching!!
9 months later but... Ys? Better? Maybe in platforming lol
I don't doubt they are good games. It seems very odd to mention the Ys series in a post about the storytelling in Xenogears. I've seen a lot of lists of best stories in games, and don't recall Ys being anywhere near the top of any of those.

So how important is Grand Theft Auto to Japan?
(even if this dude was Japanese, you can only be so oblivious and he's beyond a doubt fucking around at this point)
sooo underrated
This intro always gives me goosebumps, lol.
Every single time.
epic intro, only at the end of the game i understood it, epic
I remember my brother buying this when it was released ten years ago, but he only got as far as barely half of disc1. I came around to playing it three years later, when I was out of school...and it took me at least four months to finish it. So engrossing.
If I remember it well, this was set several millenia into the future.
I like the animation style..kinda a cel/anime/cg thing that really fits well together
Ronyxis J. Kenny, is that you?
I like how long this game is. I just played it for the first time on ps3, and after Solaris I found out their was a disk 2 after playing 45 hours. That made me very happy :)
i've stopped playing console games after having finished xenogears in 98. i knew nothing could come close to it.
this is and i think always will be my favorite rpg of all time. Its a bloody shame more people didnt give it a chance. It hardly had any publicity, and i think it far outweighs 99% of the rpg's ive played over the years.
Even almost twelve years after this game's release, I'm still playing it...
Picked up the Greatest Hits version from a locally own video game store for 25 dollars. Can't wait to play it! XD
Such a good game. I still have my original copy. Never getting rid of it.
The best Rpg i ever played for ps1.Square Enix you really Rockz.
Most EPIC Intro EVER. I mean he lost his weapons, then his crew then the Entire ship. Yet the captain kept his cool. Epic Beard FTW.
My absolute favorite rpg
nostalgia...i vividly remember watching this intro for the first time...
*"You shall be as gods."*
Deus started Nier: Automata confirmed!
There isn't any other intro that gives chills like this one.
one of my all time favorite games... cant say the same for the three sagas =/ even though you do get to see weltall in part 3
I remember this!! I never got a chance to play it, but a good YT buddy of mine said it's AWESOME!! I mainly remember the ad for Xenogears in a magazine. It had the epic quote, "Stand tall, shake the Heavens!
it is one of the best RPG in my life...
God I miss this game. It had the coolest story ever for an RPG.
yeah is true i have played a lot of rpgs in that time and only two really captivate me and those games are wild arms and xenogears the story of these two games are legend makers!!
@CatoptricCistula
Graphics don't replace original storyline and compelling characters. Even Square forgot that I guess.
I'm speckles i grow up trying to play ever squaresoft and enix and never have i heard of this game O.O. thank u fir uploading vid ^w^
how can u dislike this game, this were the times when square actually cared about their players
Yup, the intro theme is awesome.
Xenogears has a storyline that is unrivaled by ANY sifi plot in the whole entire world. Not even a movie like Star Wars can hold a torch to the brilliance of Xenogears. It is simply the best ever created.
i personaly loved FFX. Story and Music kicked ass in that game. Caught me by surprise! :P
One of the best games ever made. I know it was rushed in the end and they wanted to re-make it via Xenosaga, but this was still the best.
@Cleancutchaos I had the same happen to me. Played the game as a kid and didn't really get a lot of the philosophical and religious overtones. I replayed the game recently and it blew me away. The best RPG ever !! It moved me deeply...
Creators said they were inspired by it. You can really tell with the way the command room is set up
only thing i know that xenosaga follows after xenogears because abel began to exist after eldridge crash but appears in xenosaga which means its kinda either after it or in the time miang was trying to take over the world xenosaga happened
Good luck finding it. I found it at gamestop about 4-5 years ago. Never saw a copy again. Not even at game stores that sell older games.
This game brings back memories :(
One of the best.
@Thablet The demo came with Parasite Eve, I will never forget how much the ending of the demo blew me away with the gameplay montage.....
This is still my favorite game opening of all time.
Xenogears is "book 5" but then I don't like to think of Xenogears as part of the Xenosaga game series. Xenogears is in a different realm of awesome altogether (Xenosaga's not too bad though).

Probably one of the most complex story ever told.
@shivalpha
next to or after chrono trigger.. the story is by far the sickest and most epic ive ever experienced..
@Cleancutchaos lol I was a bit confused by this game at times too but i was lucky old enough to get the idea of what they were talking about
This game is one of the most beautiful, deep, and greatest experiences that I ever had in gaming. It's also living proof the Square isn't what it used to be.
Basically, anyone can play Final Fantasy, but REAL men play Xenogears.
Greatest Rpg imo!
"I am Alpha and Omega,

"98% of our weapons have been taken over!"
BETTER LAUNCH THE TARG- I MEAN, ESCAPE SHUTTLES :v
@Raminess I honestly dont remember how or when i got this game but it was many years ago. took a little to get into and forever to fully understand the mechanics but this is def in my top 5 games ever played. still struggle on the story but i plan on playing it over winter break again
I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beggining and the end, the first and the last
@mervellious I think you can't escape Captain Glovel after Robotech.
Gives me the god damn chills every fucking time.
this game is pure ARTWORK on RPG history along with Planescape : Torment
Fun fact: Many believe this scene to happen a few hundred (or thousand) years after Xenosaga III - after the Gnosis conflict, the few states that weren't wiped out eventually commissioned the Eldridge to find a new home with new resources. Nice to see a corded phone being used in the future
@MasterInzaghi Once I'm finished with Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid, and StarCraft, I may get around to playing through this game.
Best game ever, it is still my favorite game.
+1 this is the best rpg of all the time
Because Dues is a Gnosis terraforming bio weapon, created by the Federation that Momo helped at the end of Saga 3, there I spoiled it for everyone it needed to be cleared.
Also I never noticed until I saw this opening again--the young girl in the captain's picture looks like Elly.
I always wanted to play this game T-T but it was never released in PAL...
This game marked my childhood
@Mahbu I would help and tell you about the ship and Deus, but I couldn't bring myself to spoil any part of this story. It's a special game...
@VictorVonFox
This is a game you have to play more than once to understand. This intro has a lot to do with the story.
wish they release it on xbox 360 games. damn I miss this game so much!
