I love how at first the events of this intro seemed to have nothing to do with the story, but after finishing the game you can see that they are the reason for everything.
The game would make even more sense if they actually got to make the entire Xeno-series that was "planned" but we only ever got Xenogears and than Xenosaga 1, 2 and 3.

I would love it if Square licensed Xenogears to Nintendo/Monolithsoft for a proper remake including everything that was ever intended to go into the original game, along with updates and upgrades from Takahashi's learnings from Xenosaga and Xenoblade. Also, bring in the full direction team including Soraya Saga, Yasunori Mitsuda, Yasuyuki Honne, and Kunihiko Tanaka. I believe all work for Nintendo currently except Saga and Mitsuda; but Saga has worked exclusively with Nintendo on a contractual basis since leaving Namco in 2004, and Mitsuda works primarily with Nintendo, so it should be very easy to bring them onboard. The whole team are now veterans and do very high quality work. Unlike the FF7 team (which is missing several key people from its development team), who people are worrying about, there's every reason to believe the Monolithsoft team would not only do the source material justice, but improve on its presentation.
Yeah i would love it, cause I never played Xenogears but the newer Takahashi and Honne games (Baten Kaitos 1 + Origins, Xenoblade) and they are all great. At least we get a new Xenoblade on Nintendo Switch this dezember. The next game after that is said to be more medieval and western.
I remember watching this over and over on the demo disc that came with, I think, FF7. This fmv will forever be embedded in my mind as a result.. There was SO much unexplained and only when you've made it through more than half of the game do you realize the importance of this entire scene.. They DEFINITELY don't make games like this anymore.
It was parasite eve they had a playable demo of xenogears and brave fencer musashi also was a video demo of FF8 which wasn't out yet plus if you have this demo disc you can use it with the game to play all the FM videos from xenogears if you have the game you can swap out the disc and instead of watching the opening you can watch all the FM videos.
I have it. PE comes with the 1998 Collector's CD volume 1, which has Xenogears (playable), Bushido Blade 2 (movie), Brave Fencer Musashi (movie) and FF8 (movie).
It was back when Square was taking some ballsy risks, especially narratively. They became vital and contemporary, unfortunately it didn't last long, they became increasingly self reflexive after the narrative failure of FFVIII

I didn't realize until I saw the script that they actually use the word "Deus" in the dialogue here. I really wish this game had subtitles. It would've made this scene a lot easier to comprehend.
they don't say deus in the script (if you're talking about the auto pilot system). in the dialogue, they say "Auto pilot system Faust has been accessed, and its phased space logic is being rewritten." however, the gamefaqs script that I think you're referencing uses "deus" instead of faust for some reason.
the self destruct sound effect comes from Terminator 2 when Arnold uses the grenade launcher, specifically the shot that kills T1000. I've watched that movie so many times I knew I've heard that sound before.

I think an argument can be made that the a.i. that takes over the ship was copied from KOS-MOS...or it -was- her...; regardless, we'll never know, as we'll never see 'episode 4'....
The primary antagonist taking over the ship is Deus (the wave motion existence/U-DO), the trans dimensional being that was imprisoned as a source of energy for Zohar. The Zohar is half of the WMD Yabeh and its energy source (And the idiocy of them transporting a galactic level weapon of mass destruction to be decommissioned on a civilian colony ship!). At the same time the mother aspect, Kadomony the organic computer half of Yabeh was fulfilling the maternal wish of the boy who came into contact with Yabeh (and freed Deus). Zohar is a source of infinite energy (of potentially divine origin) that has existed since the beginning of time and was found buried on Earth in Kenya (also called Lost Jerusalem in Xenosaga because they hid themselves away from the rest of the galaxy to stop the Zohar being used), like the Monoliths of 2001 which it is visually inspired by its implied that it influenced and sparked the evolution of humanity and intelligence. Studying the Zohar allowed humanity to develop warp travel. There are 12 keys to it called Anima which when used cause Zohar to reset the universe back to its initial creation.
The lead developers have actually denied being influenced by Evangelion- and they’ve been very forthcoming about other influences (e.g. the book Childhood’s End, or Rico existing just because they playing a lot of Street Fighter II). So apparently there was just a lot of interest in these sorts of things in 1990s Japan!

The A.I. of said system became self-aware and took over the ship, in which the captain pressed the self-destruct button to destroy it. The ship along with the A.I. crashed on the nearby planet which heavily damaged the former. The purple-haired woman at the end is a creation of said weapon, to act as an agent of it in order to repair it using humans built from its remains to act as spare parts after refining them.
