- In episode 5 we look to tackle the roof and replace some panels! Sorry I was unable to film any of the felt going down, it was hard to film and work on this part of the job solo.

Fantastic job on the brake van roof 👍🏻 You could just imagine BR railway waggon works turning out brake vans in any old fashion not like your attention to detail 🤩
Great project thanks for sharing.
I always think there's old brake vans would make a good sleeping pod.
Glad you enjoyed Philip :)
I would recommend at least painting over the nail heads with the adhesive paint - will help seal them. Also, paint the whole roof with solar reflective paint. This will stop a lot of the expansion/contraction caused by heating up and cooling and will stop the felt ripping around the nails.
I would recommend investing in a professional roofer to apply the torch on stuff they use for flat roofs as it will last a very long time, especially if painted with solar reflective paint, and will be worth the investment - think 20-30 years without leaks!
I’ve made enquiries where there may be the missing internals from your lamp and will let you know if I can get a positive response.
Hopefully the lamps are sorted thanks to your intel so thank you very much for that! Still a rubber like seal of sealing paint to go over the felt to get it to colour match the rest of the wagon to civil grey!
I love your reviews on BR rolling stock Jen, I'm not sure these brake vans were coated in roofing felt from the factory. ... Have you any thoughts on this ? .... Keep up the good work.
@@danielwalker2613 most likely canvas painted with some sort of paint.
These are excellent. Well done mate, enjoying it.
Glad you like them! Plenty more on the way!
This has been great to watch and sound is great from the Rode, I’m a sound engineer part time from Australia 🇦🇺. Hope to get to UK next year would love to come and see this break van and of course the rest.
Episode 11 is already out so you have some catching up to do 😆
Brilliant Job
Thanks John!
This is progressing so quickly! Honestly love watching these sorts of videos, the quality is phenomenal. Now I want to build a model of your brake van, what livery are you going to paint it in? Keep it up, Sam.
Wait till I get the drone out next time :P It would be an honor to see my brake in lego! Its livery will be civil engineers grey with the yellow stripe around the top! If you make it a video about it I can share it on my socials :)
Interesting watching the progress, have you a budget or just seeing what’s needed as you go along.
Ingenious idea re the trampoline as if you fall off the roof you will bounce back up 😀
Cheers Kev
I have made a few totals of what it has cost so far, perhaps that is something to talk about in a future video
Before you fit the new chimney, the stove pipe has a crack in it. You need to remove the stove and pipe completely, and get a new one fitted. The full brake van renovation will take a few years to complete properly. New seats need to be fitted too. If the rain spoils your efforts, you'll have to start over again. The railway should have a workshop, so the restoration can be completed undercover. In any case, sunshine all the way can't be guaranteed as we know. Be prepared for a heavy downpour if it comes. Good luck, you'll need it. And let's hope the HST power car goes back on the main line sidings, where it belongs.
Kelly I'm not sure how much you know about the CVR but they don't have engine sheds I can chuck it in!
Watching from the other side of the pond; always had a love for some of the ol' BR Era stuff and I'm super glad I found this restoration series! Really exciting watching you bring this stock from a bygone era some well-deserved TLC! I don't know much about railroad restoration, especially non-American stuff, but I'm really keen on seeing what you do with this project!
Keep up the fantastic work! You got a well-deserved sub!
Thank you so much for subscribing! Lots more videos on the way to look forward to 🙂
Way better audio :-) it's a bit like restoring a house, get it watertight first and the rest will drop into place. you do need to replace the stove pipe that is a nasty crack as you don't want to be giving yourself carbon monoxide poisoning.
Don’t worry the Stove will get dealt with soon enough 🙂
wonderful video
Cheers Mels
Nice one. Love your brake van. Hope you get to run it with the Colne Valleys resident steamer! That will be a sight!
Cheers,
Joe
Haha, maybe one day! Glad you’re enjoying the series 🙂
Good video! The new microphone is much better!
Glad to hear it (pardon the pun)
Good work
Thank you!
When you go back and take the middle layer of felt off, I would strongly suggest you sand down or replace the wood planks, that have bowed upwards on their edges. They are creating a weak point on the felt, as you can see on the video.
Whilst I agree at the moment it is perfectly structurally sound and now the roof is done it’s perfectly water tight and have had no issues since 👍
@@WardleRestorations It happens over time with the heat and cold. The felt cracks at the stress point, where there are sharp edges. When it's laid on smooth surfaces it's fine and will not crack. Only time will tell.
Ive used that stuff its awful. But it works my outside bar is smothered in it. No leaks after 5 years
Good to know, cheers!
GOOD JOB
thanks!
Very enjoyable Ollie..nice one. You (both) did well there. Audio loud and clear too.
Thanks for watching and supporting as always Mr Tim Jd!
Another great video, audio is spot on with the new mike, once the roof is finished is one of the next jobs replacing the missing pieces below the ducket then in my eyes that would make it ‘water tight’ ? Keep up the good work, David
Next job will likely be running boards as duckets need to be removed, measured, laser cut and welded! They are both beyond salvageable
I’ve got a lamp insides. Including wick. Works ok just needs fuel!! Your welcome to it. Pm me.
Yes please! How can I contact you?
The new Lav Mic sounds great. Much better than the on camera mic. The roof is taking great shape.
Thanks for the kind words, glad you enjoyed :)
Great job well done !! All good on the audio side too.
Much appreciated! Glad the improvement has been noticed!
The wood on the roof looked to be in good nick really considering its age and you guys done well to get a match to replace those parts. Roofing felt adhesive is a right bugger as you have found out but you've got it done and looking good and should do the job for a few years to come. I would paint over the nail heads to protect them from rusting but looking good and you had a nice day to be able to do that all. Enjoying these episodes.
Is the HST preserved there or is it a visitor for storage?
Regards
Steve
Thanks for the kind words mate! Yeh I’m still getting stuck to stuff with roofing felt adhesive even now 😂 the HST belongs to one of our members so it’s here permanently for people to enjoy!
Ahahaha I no that feeling covered in the adhesive after doing me man cave roof lol looks grate role on next vid and if you hear at a 10ton wagon for sale give me a shout please 🙏
Next vid will be out next week hopefully! Will do!

Totally worth getting the rode, it makes a massive difference to the watch ability!
100% the real test will be when a noisy loco comes past me!
@@WardleRestorations Consider the benefit of noise cancelling a bonus, just recording sound away from the camera makes a huge difference. A wired mic would do it, but the wireless just gives you the freedom of any distance and ease of moving around unencumbered by wires!
amazing progress
Cheers Luke!
@@WardleRestorations no problem
Great progress and much better audio too!
Appreciate it!
You’re doing a great job! Audio was bang on. Once the roof is complete are you planing on working from the inside out? Can’t wait for work. #6
Next up will be the running boards and treating the chassis, inside won’t start properly until new vents have been fitted and duckets replaced!
Fantastic video - most enjoyable - great sound quality- excellent job renovating your brake cable van roof - well done!
Glad everyone’s pleased with the audio upgrade! Video upgrade next?😂
I presume the boards under the roofing felt got wet when it rains and then couldn't be dried out by the sun as the felt was blocking the sun but the exposed ones would dry out in the sun. And £20 for a lamp!! Absolute bargain all the ones I've seen are £70-100
I seen one in the Railwayana shop at NVR for £120 so I think mine was deffo a steal!
I love that diesel at 0:05 what is the story on it?
It’s a battery powered loco! Will cover it in a future episode maybe!
@@WardleRestorations Yes please do!
I think more heritage railways should do this, let the public buy some old stock that's just sat there and let them restore it up. It saves the railway having to pay and do the work in restoring it. And then run it on the railway.
Ha I’m actually a member rather than ‘a member of public’ If that makes sense 😂😆
@@WardleRestorations Yeah, I get that it's just you often see heritage railways that have sidings full of rotting away rolling stock and the answer is always "yeah we're getting round to it" and of course i understand heritage railways aren't made of money in fact far from it, but they could as the saying goes 'kill 2 birds with 1 stone' by selling unused rolling stock therefore creating more money and the job can be completed quicker than if the railway had to do it plus the expenses aren't out of the railway's pocket. My local railway Nene Valley Railway has quite a lot of privately owned stuff which they are allowed to run on the railway. Including a polish tank engine and a Swedish railcar with newly restored carriage which the owners have been doing along with the youth group. But their still the off brakevan and wagons sat in a siding just crumbling into dust it would be good if someone bought them and restored it. Even if they took it away and brought it back a few years later it would still be progress. Although one problem is sometimes the owner buys it and then it just sits there and you can't do anything about it as it's not the railways. The NVR has a beautiful looking intercity sleeper coach that was lovingly restored quite a few years back but the owners have just left it there so now its taking up space and its all faded on one side due to the sun. Luckily the faded side isn't facing the platform so it doesn't look half bad when standing on the station its only when you walk around the yard you can see the fade. Great job though 👏 👌 👍 😃
@@CustomiZe_ I was actually at the Nene valley railway yesterday as visiting a mate near by, I took lots of photos of the wagons sat in the sidings rotting away so who knows 😂👀
@@WardleRestorations you're kidding, so was I and never saw you that's quite annoying lol 😆 😂 you might even see yourself in my video on my channel and I hadn't of even noticed lol 😆 otherwise I would've said hi
Roofing adhesive - too late now, but for next time, get some of those thin disposable gloves like from petrol station forecourts, then your skin doesn't get stuck, just the gloves! The radio mic is a big improvement.
I shall remember this for the future!
