    Another great video. Good progress. The boys in the Restoration Shed who are working the brake van said that the repaired the ducts cutting out the rust sections and welding in new plate. Also on a carriage during renovation we I used builders plastic sheet ground B & Q on the roof. Works well and it’s been suggested that the final covering will be taunt liner vinyl sheet.

    • @WardleRestorations

      We thought about replacing the ducts but damage wise they are way too far gone that it would be better time spent making up a new set than attempting to fix the current ones! Appreciate the kind words, lots more videos on the way!

    So when it comes to power tools, one is none (if it packs up) but two tools is one. It's something I've learned from survival activities: 'one is none, two is one etc.'

    Good going Ollie. The grinder would have been handy right enough but these things must be like lay-outs or loco's that were 'running when tested before the camera goes on' but good for you for soldiering on without it. There must be a similar or even 'donor' Stove Pipe Cover somewhere...
    A good start to the Brake Van there then, movement and all!. Will be following this. Nice one Ollie. Keep Safe, chap! Cheers!

    Belt sander, orbital sander and p60, p80 and p120 grit sand paper will rip all that paint off all the timber in no time flat both inside and outside. That will reveal all hidden horrors..
    If the timber is that far gone anywhere the very best you can do is cut it right out and replace it with new wood. Also as someone mentioned in the comments don't skimp on the quality and use hardwood on all external repairs.
    The ronseal 2 pac filler you have is OK for inside but avoid using it outside, stick with the epoxy repair care to fill in around any timber repairs you make on all exterior stuff.
    Drop me a pm when you've got a spare 5 min over the weekend for a chat if needed.

      Hi mate, thank you for the tips, I’ve already filmed episode 4 where I replace that beam with a treated fence post type piece, so I won’t be able to take on any of these tips until the episode after that! The wood hardener hasn’t been very good though, it only works in small areas rather than larger bits. Hopefully you can see what I’ve done in the next episode and make recommendations from there, will give you a call over the weekend!

    We remove old paint on smaller pained wooden by use of heat gun and scraper. Just be mindful the paint when heated gives off fumes but it is much easier. Rust removal on metal parts is usually done by giving the metal a good wire brushing and knock off any rust that is flaking off then tack rag the rust dust off and put a coat of the green anti corrosive metal primer paint (most preserved railways use this) . Usually metal painting involves adding two layers of the green primer a couple of layers of the undercoat colour you wish to paint the metal in and then the final layer should be a couple of layers of the final main gloss colour you are going to finish the parts in.

    • @WardleRestorations
      @WardleRestorations  2 года назад +1

      One thing ive learnt so far is everything needs lots of layers! A coat of this, that and the other! Hopefully you enjoyed the video!

      @@WardleRestorations it's time consuming but worth it. I am enjoying this series and can't wait to see the finished result. Hopefully it won't take too long restore compared to the carriages we work on which can take up to 8 years to complete. I know the wagon restoration guys don't take very long to restore wagons.

    Happy to stumble over this series; very jealous of your purchase. Last time I used it, Jenolite was just a phosphoric acid preparation in a gel and bloody expensive. Try stripping the paint first (mechanical or chemical), clean up with abrasives / wire brush / wheel and then use a phosphoric acid solution from agricultural suppliers, which is much cheaper. The phosphoric acid just converts the top layer of rust; won't necessarily remove all the rust on its own. You can then paint on top. Acid etch primer is always a good bet.

    • @WardleRestorations
      @WardleRestorations  2 года назад +1

      Jenolite is extremely expensive! Ive been recommended a few more products to try over the next few weeks and hopefully deal with the rust once and for all! Hopefully you continue to enjoy the series!

    I don't know if you have a site key (see my ex Sally, she might help) this would gain you access to Hedingham North for power either to recharge batteries or more powerful grinder with a couple of extension leads. Roofing felt is ok as long as you use plenty of bitumen for it to bond to.

    just one complaint can you get a remote mic for the camera it's a bit difficult hearing you when you're stood away from it :-) did you do a check on the paint to see if it was lead based, you really don't want to be sanding that down if it is.

    Rule no. 1: make sure a shunter takes the Guard's Van into the safety of a railway workshop
    Rule no. 2: let volunteers get to work, replacing the body, roof, sheets of steel and the coal fire inside
    Rule no. 3: protect your clothes when repainting, it's a messy job (you need a pair of perfectly steady hands)
    Doing the work out in the open is a no-go. Heavy showers of rain can easily spoil your efforts, the rotten wood will shrink and rainwater will get inside the van. Sanding and painting isn't enough. Believe me, you want to renovate the van, you need to give it a full proper overhaul undercover. You can't do the work alone. Let's hope you haven't bitten off more than you can chew.

    • @bentullett6068
      @bentullett6068 2 года назад

      He definitely needs to get it undercover when he needs to strip the roof, exterior panels and repaint the exterior. Currently I am working on helping restore a LNER teak at Bewdley and it is having a serious strip down as some of the wood isn't great after its last restoration in the 1980's early 1990's

    • @WardleRestorations
      @WardleRestorations  2 года назад

      Kelly 90% of the wood on the main body is completely fine.
