A Discord Moderator's Worst Nightmare...

- LMFAO, Discord’s Moderator Academy and Certified Discord Moderator badge are no more! Despite the number one academic program dedicated to adding extra pounds and inches on your waist, this program indicates the health of Discord as a platform. While there are Discord mods genuinely upset about the badge being gone, I think they are missing the real travesty here. Discord is not sustainable. With Discord layoffs happening and programs being closed down, there is a true financial struggle going on that will definitely result in everyone’s Discord experience being altered.

Heyo boss babies, I got some stuff to clarify.
The Discord Moderator Academy website and articles and all that jazz, definitely going to stay. It doesn't really cost Discord moneys to keep those useful articles up. However, the different discord servers, the badge, and most importantly that impossible exam are gone. And yes, Discord might be a deviant little one and open it all back up in the future. But I don't think it makes sense for them to do so.
Second thing, you could actually get the Discord Certified Moderator Badge if you were in the Moderator Mentorship Community server (the one for the 13-17 year olds). I guess that explains the badge savages hopping on the exam even more than before :D
Ayo..?

Too bad, I’m trying

the fact that people will go this far to get a badge is insane, but also sad.
do people. think badges make them cool?
@@amramrYT they do, I even know alot of teenagers spending 100$ each year jus to get some kind of boost badge "with nitro as an extra benefit"
@@amramrYT Yes, yes they do
hmm okay
People are naturally competitive, and that also means they want to stand out over others and be seen as “better”.
On discord, there’s not really much to stand out with, other than bot-related features that aren’t on every server, and badges that show up globally. So people default to badges just so they can have things that other people don’t, which makes them feel special/better than others.
You forgot to mention that if you're not from a country discord likes, there's no chance for you to get into the moderator academy

Articles were written by the community! (not discord lol) Honestly that's why they're so good. There are a lot but theyre actually really useful for building and managing a healthy community
Yeah, people who wrote them pretty friendly to talk to if you need help or have a question about community related stuff. I know a few of them manage a lot of the official game community discord servers.
I hope they don’t take down the articles
I helped with some of them - it was a good bit to do with the Discord Partner Program so yeah! We were able to write things up for Discord in the private Partner server

@@XER0GRAVITY articles are still being managed atm. they might stop writing them (in fact, likely they will given the community they used to source authors from was closed down) but I doubt they'll take em down completely

You honestly can’t blame them. Discord came into the market with big promises, and is now expected to turn a profit without pay-gating existing features. We all saw this coming.
I don't care about Discord or their profits. I'm focused on creating the best music and making sure my fans are happy. I don't have time for the haters and I'm not going to let anyone bring me down.

Never in a million years
Everyone wants to get laid. No one wants to get laid off.
Not "Some discord users got laid" though. Discord company employees probably don't use their product.
"discord moderator discord" sounds like really fancy word for child predator community.
That one 17 year old who waited years for that badge just for the program to shut down:
You could actually get a badge when under 18 in the mmc server
As someone who's part of the closed Discord Testers server, I get to see the new features a few weeks / months before they get released to the public. There are definitely some pretty cool (mostly visual) features coming for Nitro users, but I won't go into any more detail than that. So far it seems like they're not going into a "wrong" / "bad" direction with their changes. Also, the tech-sector in general is going through a pretty rough time right now, even the biggest of the biggest companies are laying off thousands of employees, it's not a Discord specific problem and most likely not because "servers are so expensive".
I mean servers are expensive, but in most cases it's people who are more expensive. Though at some point, discord is going to have to decide whether it's really worth holding on to tons of year-old conversations. While I doubt they will kill message history from DMs unless they get desperate, I do expect that they will at some point in the future (probably in a few years) start limiting the message history of servers.
@@puppy0cam Text is absurdly cheap. It's the images and video that really spike data usage. Those are on the chopping block moreso than anything else.
@@LiveType mind that the text also needs to be indexed and gets increasingly harder to search the further back it goes. but yeah media will be first on the chopping block.
There's so many jokes to be made at the expense of discord moderators off of that title, but I respect this channel too much to make them
This is actually quite funny. I do Community Management and help to “train” new mods. We created our own resources many years ago for our Mods and since Discord created the “Mod Academy” we cut down some of our literature and would have classes with some of our trainees and go through the Mod Academy Literature.
It was actually quite helpful for people who have never done moderation work before, let alone on Discord. Fuck the badge lel
I always love the goodbye kiss at the end Imao
As a MMC (Moderator Mentorship Community) member I gotta mention that the purpose of all this was more to learn than to earn the badge. That's what pretty much everyone says that participates in that community or so. However, I also have to mention that at least 99% of the people joined for the badge only. The badge how it is right now, will probably stay as a simbol of being one of the first people to join the servers. Just like how the Verified Bot Dev badge became the *Early* Verified Bot Dev badge.

The biggest way Discord makes their money is through high-profile investors, and there's a few of them, one of those investors is Tencent, and you also need to remember that Discord is a gold mine for user data, those two paired together is never a good sign.
You're making big claims here bud. Please provide actual evidence that supports your statement about Discord selling user data to Tencent.
@@aaacaaaaaab Yeah like just because Tencent is an investor doesn't mean they get any user data.

@@aaacaaaaaab I never claimed that. I just mentioned that it might be a red flag, why else would Tencent want a stake in Discord?
Plus, Discord has a clause in their terms of service which allows them to share your data with "related 3rd parties" so they're already set if things get desperate.

You should do a video on the terrible bug testing server and how it ties in to the Discord subreddit, mainly if a bug is about Discord being unable to connect to the internet at all, and you make a post about it in the Discord subreddit, it's removed because there's a rule against bug reports, and you're directed to the Discord bug testing server.... but due to your issue you literally can't go there!
Also, here's an an infuriating story that happened to me:
A long time ago, I found a bug where video files beyond 20 or so MB wouldn't embed, only letting you click the download button, odd as Nitro had a max of 50 back then, so I joined the Discord testers' server. First off, at least back then, the submission process was downright confusing and disorganized, but I submitted the bug report. Less than a minute later, the report was rejected as "this is not a bug".
About a week later, Discord got an update, and the patch note popup said something like "We fixed a bug that prevented videos larger than 20 MB to embed, thank you to [user who isn't me] for reporting this!" Incompetent server much? That legitimately pissed me off, rejecting my report as "not a bug" but someone else comes along and makes the same report, report accepted, bug fixed. What on earth is the point of the server if this will happen?
Discord Testers also shut down iirc
@@stolentrevin But on the subreddit they still tell you to go there, or at least they did last time I checked. Every time I post a bug report it gets removed, but others can and they stay up.
they also have hype-squad events "temporarily" buts its been disabled for like 3 months I think :/
a discord mods worst nightmare is being caught calling a 13 year old ''their kitten''
No Text To speech Im in love with your videos, they are so useful. Thanks.
A few of this quote "Certified Discord Moderators" didn't even follow ToS, I cannot explain much because they'd delete everything and Discord is still investigating into this. I would come back and edit this comment once Discord handles the situation.
12/30/22: Wow, I forgot about this comment but I needed to make sure that I gave time for Discord to properly dish out a punishment (If they even did, they stated they do not give word if action was taken). Sorry for the long wait, even as of this comment I'm risking this person to go on some witchhunt to DM me, even though I have both of their accounts blocked. *If you do see this and you know who you are, DO NOT talk to me. I do not intend on talking to you.*
This person was practically the co-owner of the discord, they were in charge of everything discord related. This server was attached to a game, and that server had around 25k members and is actually a public server and you can find it on the Public Servers tab. I will call this person "Bub" (No this isn't related to their actual name, I just didn't want to say "this person" all the time) I was a former Discord Staff for the server, but Bub who was in charge of said server just seemed to have a grudge against me. Bub, from my knowledge, was actually a police officer, and seemed to decide to hold some kind of hatred for some random 13 year old on the internet. I was just talking in the discord and Bub was in a voice chat. We were completely separate from each other (keep this in mind, I also had him blocked at the time aswell) but Bub had told the other people within the voice chat (some were even staff of the discord) to tell me quote "Bub told you not to speak" and "Bub said you're annoying", basically they made it clear they did not want me within the chat at all even though I was not breaking any rules at all. I defend myself, obviously, as this situation was quite stupid. They then go into chat, basically stating that "You're arrogant and annoying" just wanting for me to know how "annoying" I am and how "that is his opinion".
Think what you want, if you dislike me then that is your opinion, but sometimes does your opinion really need to be heard by the person your opinion is based on? I no longer partake in this community and I am not going to give who this person is
Infact recently there was another situation. Two years ago I had exposed one of their staff (whom i will call Duck, unrelated to their actual name)of their habits of being into gacha images...with the subjects within those images being of under 18, and partaking in actions that RUclips would NOT allow me to probably speak about. Duck was basically really interested in gacha children, if you know the word here then you know. I had exposed Duck within public chat and recieved a ban from the server (although later appeal the ban) but they had made a (now deleted) announcement that they were "looking within the situation" however, Duck was never fired, they had actually resigned due to the entire community being aware of what they had done. To this day Duck still partakes within other communities, but I had recieved word that the owner of the game (reminder that the server Bub is in charge in, he only manages the discord while the owner manages the game) had collected a ton of proof of what Duck had done and was about to spread word to every community about their actions, but Bub had stopped him. For whatever reason, I still have NO IDEA why Bub stopped the owner of the game and is basically defending Duck here. This kind of situation may seem mixed, as I myself have mixed opinions about it.
I have proof backing up both instances of what had happen, infact the first situation I had talked about was what was reported to Discord, however the second situation about Duck had happened much later but I do not see it as breaking Discord ToS, however the first situation does fall under "harassment" and technically bypassing the "block account" feature is clearly not allowed.
*Reminder, if you know that you are "Bub" DO NOT talk to me. I do NOT want to be involved with you anymore.*
Allright! I'm curious about what it is.

Discord should add server advertisements to earn money. Basically, servers can pay to get a little banner/ad somewhere. It could be 1 dollar = 100 people seeing the ad or something, I dont know what conversion rate would be best. The ad could be located somewhere like above the Friends button in your homepage, taking up the space that the snowsgiving thing does now. This would help discord get some money, and server owners to possibly get some more members. Would be pretty cool.

they should make a discord supporter badge and make so if somebody has gifted/bought enough nitro they would get it, like 6 months of nitro? sounds like they can make some extra cash
Discord is the definition of "suffering from success"
I know we love to bash on discord (for good reason) a lot, but can we just take a minute to appreciate how they keep the core components of discord free for all of us? Like the fact that they keep it AD free, something that we take for granted on discord, but not on other sites such as RUclips, the very site that we're watching this video on. Like, just the Advertisement free-ness is a gem itself ALONE. Like... DAMN.
However that doesn't exempt discord from the absolutely terrible things that they've done previously.
Great video NTTS!
Honestly, that should be the bare minimum. Not something we should thank Discord for.
@@kakorotskywalker Valid, discord isn't immue to criticism and their discord nitro advertising is deceptive.
One thing I could see working very well with little to no issue or intrusion is ads on the loading page (the one with the spinning discord logo and the random fun fact).
This could potentially be negative if it ends up being forced to stay up for 5 seconds or something, but there are many compromises that could be made to make it so it doesn't hurt loading times while also making discord money. Best one I can see is the first one of the day is a 5-10 second banner ad, and then for the rest of the day you get passive ads with no time restrictions. Easy to make money for discord, and doesn't waste our time.
It's worth noting that placing ads there *would* noticably increase load times. Discord could (mostly) hide that with a set time like you said, but either way I think you underestimate how much users would be irritated by it
I hate the thing how you need nitro to just customize youe experience. A still banner still needs nitro! AND IT'S NO FAIR FOR FREE USERS! CUSTOMIZATION IS SO LIMITED WITH FREE USERS

I don't see why Discord doesn't go the RUclips or Spotify way, serve passing advertisments to free users that don't get in the way. Getting any tier of Nitro gives you the current additional perks while also removing these ads. It would allow Discord to generate income from any user of their platform, while also still not polluting it with ads and also keeping users happy with Nitro features. It's just what to me would make sense to do.
