  • This week I had the privilege to interview one of my absolute favorite vocalists, Jim Grey of Caligula's Horse. We come from distinctly different backgrounds, and it was incredibly interesting and insightful to hear the perspective of someone who does this day in and day out. I'm sorry for the technical issues; I ran out of hard drive space and ended up having to do a lot of splicing and editing.
At any rate, I hope you all enjoy this interview, and PLEASE check out Caligula's Horse. They are incredibly underrated and overlooked.

Just listening to your interview with Jim,would like your opinion of this Australian band that was released some 20 years before Caligula's Horse. Very different vocals, by very interesting. Thanks Zach

This man is the reason why I decided to become a singer. His voice, his vocal lines, his lyrics, it's all inspiring me. Awesome you got him Zack!

I really enjoyed this interview. Although, speaking of falsetto I've heard clips of Jim doing falsetto live and it doesn't sound as strong as in recordings.

Jim is actually one of the best vocalists of the progressive scene, live. Monuments, Tesseract, and Good tiger are my favorites, but lets be fair, they just don't have the ability to sing their own material live.
I'm not sure if you've ever listened to "I, The Destroyer" by monuments, vocalist: Chris Barretto. The man is amazing, the song is wild, and the vocals are powerful. The verses stay in the upper fourth, lower fifth, and he hits an F# at the end. It was obvious to me that given their other live performances, he would never sing this again outside of the studio.
Given new technology, we have the ability to make amazing peices of music with just 4 people in the band. And with cut/splicing, we can hit a note, and take a day break just to finish the phrase after the next day. It's sad, but some vocalists like Ian Kenny and Ashe O'Hara have caught on, and keep their songs under B4.
Awesome video! Hope Jim stays healthy until a ripe old age.

I'm unfamiliar with Good Tiger and Monuments live, but am very familiar with Tesseract live and Daniel Tompkins nails it.

I've seen them live in Atlanta, and watched plenty of other videos live. He has to rely on falsetto when going for high notes, and when he does hit the high notes, they're very pitchy and his tone is nasally.
