Should The Camera Industry Be Nervous of DJI?

- Quietly, just like smartphones did years ago, DJI is cutting into the lower end camera market. Smartphones killed off the point and shoot cameras, and now they have 1 inch sensors, zoom lenses, and better video specs. Camera companies abandoned their lower end market, but professionals still use mirrorless full frame cameras and crop sensors. Now DJI with their pocket 3 and action 4 have further pushed into the camera market, destroying Canon, Sony and Nikon's entry levels cameras and lenses. The 1 inch sensor compact has fallen, and one could argue that for vlogging and travel vlogs, the DJI Pocket 3 is the better choice than most mirrorless. Should the camera companies be worried like Blackberry and Blockbuster video weren't?

Pocket 3 video was reallly good!
I tried a real gimbal after loving the smooth footage of Pocket 3. Crane M3S with ZVE1 was such a pain to balance and carry around. Pocket 3 is so much easier, and less embarrassing.
I also recently bought a ZV-E1 and Ronin R2. It is so much harder to carry and use than an Iphone and a small crane. I can barely tell the difference except in very low light. In fact the crane gimbal is optional since the iphone stabilization is great.
I have two gimbals for two different cameras too, and it's also time-consuming balancing the things.
I was so on the fence about zve10 with gimbal or similar versus Osmo Pocket 3. This makes me feel so relieved I finally purchased the OP3.
I'm amazed by how clean (wind free) the sound is even though you are going 30 km/h - this dead kitten is doing a wonderful job.
I’ve used mine outside my backpack going over 100km/h and it still picks up good engine sounds 😮😮
If you watch it at 2x speed it's like watching him go 60 km/h. That was a scary video. I'm glad that he will live to make another dji commercial.

If DJI figures out how to squeeze a Micro 4/3 sensor with a 1.4 lens into a pocket sized body - I think I’d sell all of my camera gear and not upgrade my phone for a very long time.
Agreed. Really I'd love anyone who tries to make a small camera with 1"-APSC with weather sealing and flagship features. I suppose the OM-5 exists, but, like, will OM systems exist by the time I end this sentence? Unknown.
That will be totally impossible due to the necessary size of the sensor + lens. However, keeping the 1" sensor and sticking a larger aperture lens in front is 100% doable and I'd be totally game for that.
@@yuidfbse Not true, Sony is putting a lot of effort into making M43 sensors that will fit into smart phones. If anything - there may be a couple of years to wait for the tech to be ready - and the body would be a tad thicker, but it will be possible.
Closest thing to that is lx100 with f1.7 12mm (24mm eq). I don't think you can get any smaller diameter wise.

Not just Canon and Sony. You forgot to mention Gopro! DJI and Insta360 are taking Gopro's entire customer base! Gopro seams to be getting worse, with the dumbed-down Hero12! BTW, your POV footage on scooters always scares me. How do you talk about a subject and drive through intersections? I can't talk and drive! Or walk and chew gum! :( I almost spilled my coffee, just watching it.
Unfortunately Gopro are nolonger comparable in this market from the reviewers on RUclips. 😢

Dude, I live in The Nethertlands where (powered) bicycles are king in traffic. Your Canadian system looks scary. On the same road as cars doing 50 mph ! It would never work over here because we have so many people moving on two wheels. We have separate lanes.
I was laughing at the end about you trying to turn off the action four, turn on voice commands and then you could just say stop recording. Enjoyable as always.
The industry better take DJI seriously and start building off their innovations. Because they really are breaking a lot of new ground. As Nikon is getting into cinema, they better be looking at the Ronin 4D.
YES. Despite having the A1, A7S3, A74, FX30 I'm using the Pocket 3 as my goto offsite camera. In the studio it's the Sony's but run-n-gun content on the move? Pocket 3 all day long for my product videos - not even close. Add the DJI Mic2 noise cancellation wireless mic and it's a no brainer
Both cameras look equally stable but the Pocket 3's image destroyed the Action 4's. On a side note: I don't think scooters belong on the highway but that's me. Surely there's a safer route to wherever you're going.
Before I watch any more, I’m going to say yes because I have live streamed on my bicycle with my Pocket 3 and it’s amazing.
The major perk of these smaller cameras is I can actually BRING them somewhere. If I'm on a hiking trip through the dolomites, I couldn't give less of a crap about canon color science and 3-d pop. Most of us aren't Pete McKinnon taking private helicopters right to the top of the mountain. If Sony dropped some crazy new video camera tomorrow, it'd be too big and heavy to take anywhere, I don't even want to be able to afford it at this point and I wont be shocked in the least if there's soon going to be a push back to smaller sensor cameras all around as tech improves. I'd rather actually create with an APSC or action camera today then save for a decade to rig out my perfect kit with specs no one ultimately cares at all about.
I've watched this channel for over a year now and if Kasey's perfect camera came out, I don't know what he'd film with it. Cinematic bird footage? Something with some story? 3-d pop and color science wont make video compelling on its own. I have to assume he has BIG plans he's saving for when it finally drops. We're over here watching Kasey wrestle with specs and GAS but we watch because he's entertaining.. but if he actually finds what he's looking for.. is there any show afterwards?
I actually use the Ronin 4D for client work and the Pocket 3 for pretty much anything else and I 100% agree that if they come out with something like the DJI FX3 then good luck to all the old camera brands. I know the 4D is not for everyone but when using it there are so many things where I wonder how did no other brand figure this out before

According to the latest rumors surfaced over the web, DJI may enter direct competition with Sony, Nikon, and Canon in the Mirrorless market with its own DL-Mount Mirrorless system camera range which will include APS-C and Fullframe camera sensor-based cameras. If everything goes as per scheduled then the expansion/introduction of the range will start in Q1/Q2 of 2024.
On January 2017 DJI acquired Hasselblad, DJI reportedly bought a majority stake in the classic Swedish photography brand Hasselblad. after that, the DJI Drones cameras were re-branded with the Hasselblad name and we have seen a new level of advancement in aerial camera technology.
In short sir,the answer to whether or not the camera companies should be nervous,afraid,worried,concerned……is NO.that is all.
I love how people dont mind you using this little pocket 3 as opposed to instant reactions when carrying a large gimbal and a mirrorless on it. You can put it anywhere
Thanks for sharing your thoughts while showing how great the DJI, especially Pocket 3, can take us on your journey. Without a doubt we are seeing DJI delivering superb products that I think the traditional camera companies have not caught up to yet. It is always difficult to change the direction of a large company that had success in a different environment.

Actually, DJI owns Hasselblad and there were DJI mirrorless camera prototypes leaked a couple years ago. BTW I've mounted the Pocket 3 to my car. I used the Insta 360 stabilizer to mount it and it's VERY smooth. The coolest part is that you can remotely control the camera/ gimbal using your phone.

I was teaching English engineering vocabulary at a Japanese phone company. I bought their phone. I showed it to the engineers who designed it. They were happy that I bought it. I asked them which model they had. They told me, "iPhone." Their phone was horrible. So bad that they didn't even use it.
and dont forget the latest Zenmuse Cameras on the Ronin 4D and Inspire 3, these are high quality cameras too. (just wish i had the budget for these)

I am very impressed how stable the scooter video is. A very high bar for Sony to conquer, I still maintain a glimmer of hope they will return to the action cam arena. Sony, please take another try at the action cam market, I don't want to give my money to DJI. Stay safe on your road trips my friend, the world needs your unbiased perspective and opinions.

Great video man! I love your approach on every video. When I first started watching you I thought was annoyed by you and then I felt like we turned into best friends and I am your mute bestie. lol. Dji just creates fun technology and are always trying to invent innovations for everyone at very competitive prices. I use the ronin 4d and the first time I used it I felt that instant magic like when I first played a video game. I really get excited on every new product they release.

Stabe on the Action 4 is great but also the Pocket 3 is not terrible at all. Image quality on both is meh. I don't know why the traditional camera companies don't recognise the potential in this market segment. I think you're right, it seems like old men saying, "that's not what we do".

AND, you can zoom 2x without losing quality.
Of course you lose quality when zooming, it's a digital zoom. And nothing is in focus for like 6 feet.
yeah, Nikon's DL series, if it launched, would still be with us, gracing us with all the goodies. But they CHEATED us with that announcement 8 years ago
I’ve got the pocket 3 and it’s brilliant. If the pocket 4 has 2 focal lengths like the air 3 that would be cool. DJI and Insta360 are taking over the video world for the normal person. For ‘proper’ work I’d still use my a7iv on a gimbal due to the lenses and different looks. For photography, the mirrorless is superior

The Pocket 3 footage is really good! Pocket 3 looks better than Action 4 because it's brighter and shows more details. Although I would personally prefer 60 fps for these types of video to make the movement smoother.
Only what I need in pocket is some kind of optical zoom like 3x or 5x. This one missing thing to just buy pocket and forget about buying camera.
9:20 could you imagine? If they actually put these specs into a compact camcorder? A7S3 sensor in an AX53 body, c'mon SONY!!!
Pocket 3 looked way better. Not just with the image quality either, I am very susceptible to noticing and being bothered by issues with digital stabilization like corner warping and motion blur that doesn't match the camera's movement, so I really prefer the gimbal stabilization of the Pocket 3. Also you should try to get your hands on a DJI Ronin 4D to test for your channel, I shoot with one at work and absolutely love it. I also agree with your general premise, DJI will decimate the entire Japanese camera industry. And I have a theory of how they will do it as well, I think sometime soon DJI will move into the full frame camera market with a smaller version of their Hasseleblad X series cameras and take them head on in the stills photography arena. In my opinion the biggest advantage that Canon, Nikon, and Sony have had over the past few years has been their lens manufacturing capacity and expertise, however now that DJI has shown that they too can make excellent lenses as well such as their 17-28mm T3.0 ASPH PZ for their DL mount, I think that advantage is slipping away. Especially when you consider the possibility of them partnering with excellent Chinese lens manufacturers like 7-artisans and SIRUI.
i think its totally depend on user scenario. If someone mostly took pov like footages, pocket 3 gonna be the best option nowday. but scenario is more traditional like cinema style/ b-roll footage i think all the camera manufacture offer good enough camera options currently.

All Sony has to do is combine the X3000 and the RX0, and they will be pretty close to the Osmo Pocket 3. But for some unknown reason, they refuse to make it. Canon and Nikon won’t do it. The only company that might do it is GoPro. But let’s face it, most people just use their phone. I went to a gigantic car show yesterday in Texas called The Lonestar Round Up. I was the only person there that I saw that had a gimbal. I had the Osmo Pocket 3. A couple of people had big cameras, but most people, if they took any pictures at all, used their phone. The market is small, so maybe that is why they don’t do it. There is not enough money in it to justify the millions you need in research and development. If DJI starts cutting in into their share of the market, they will be forced to compete, or go out of business.
DJI has the Chinese government backing them. How do you compete with that? But I agree, these companies need to build off the innovations. And Nikon should be looking at the Ronin 4D as they move into cinema with RED.

Cheers for showing us your city roads. DJI have their 'New' drone money behind them, Sony have spent all their money on Hollywood studio buyouts and Canon are a a one trick (although superb) pony. Panasonic and Fuji is old money too now....
Lots of very valid.points I could go on for an hour confirming all of your points from my experience as well. I do enjoy the driving footage from my phone but hate the dataanagent workflow, no external card and not enough memory on the phone. I like the DJI options and am close to considering it for many reasons, including filming installations at work. The thought of Fuji or Panasonic coming with something is interesting, especially with fuji film emulations or panasonic's anamorphic settings. It would be interesting to see a lens with the contextual width of a 20mm lens and the compression of a 40mm or 50mm. Anamorphic is not primary for me, but it would be pretty pretty awesome to have. I think for now I should take a closer look at DJI.
You've got balls riding a 28 KMH scooter on some of those roads - i hope you upgrade to something a little faster with better stability/agility.
There's a lot of drivers on their cellphones, I'm sure I don't need to say it, but be extra diligent. - In the 50 KMH areas with long empty sidewalks I would even say just ride the side walk.
Your life is greater then the rules. Something to always remember is that 1/100 people are psychopaths, it's just a statistical fact (I think it's way more then that personally, but we'll go with the lowest official statistic) We pass, and are passed by them every day so it's only a matter of time before one plays with you on the road.
Riding a motorcycle might be safer than that, even.
Image stab and image quality from the pocket 3 was better, surprisingly good.
I have been using the pocket series since the first version (which is my favorite because of that 26mm lens, and the Pocket is my number 2 camera whenever travelling, but I use a camera with a zoom lens for 90% of photo and video. Usually an RX100 VII or G9. An ultra wide lens is just too limiting for me most of the time, and video quality on the G9 is noticeably better. The RX100 VII is not as good as Pocket for video, but far superior for photo and I am always shooting a mix of photo and video.
So, as much as I love the Pocket series, it is not close to replacing a camera for me, and if anything, it has replaced GoPro, but not non-action cameras. If I had to keep just one camera, it would not be the Pocket.
Love the videos sir.. your unique satire and style make me longing for the next video... But seriously your right the DJI in the action 4 and the pocket3 of which i have both just are nobrainers for sun and fun go to cameras. the pocket 3 does have it place as does the action 4 and together they rock, just unbeatable.. Now my a7iv and a6700 are also tools that i would not replace for doing anythin where you require the utmost quality, and that can be Documentary, of which i use multiple camera angles also realestate, etc.. i dont use the mirrorless for anything that would intimadate or scare a client, so all 4 have there place, for ruggedness and quick go i usually will grab the action 4, or pocket 3 next.. hey take care old man...

For POV you should lock the focus via mimo app. IDK why on Earth they let this feature out of the OP3 interface, but it will help to make parts of the video clearer while you move.

With the debut of OP3, all DSL and mirror camera functions have been reduced to just taking pictures only. BTW, the 3840x2160 photo from the OP3 is most suitable and sharp to view on 4K TV or monitor without image distortion.
They both look crap on the move and nice when stopped. Still no 1'' sensor on the market that provides good stabe in rougher conditions.
I hope dji brings out a slightly bigger sized "pocket" with the camera unit from the mavic 3 pro 😮

The future of hollywood movies is guys on scooters zooming through traffic capturing actors from a fixed distance of 30 feet.
I ride bikes and find side streets and hopping on/off sidewalks far more enjoyable than high speed roads with frustrated drivers traveling at many times my speed. Now once we get into traffic I LOVE getting back on the road and dodge cars crawling along.
Damn the roads in Canada are just as f***ed as they are in the US.

Yes i thinks so. Have osmo pocket 3, is easier to take out. without any direct preparation. No big differences in quality. But there are small ones.
there will be a lens & camera combo, you'll point the camera, tell it what you want to see, it'll see it & send you copy to your cloud.
Honestly, when I got the Pocket 3 I thought it WOULD replace some of my mirrorless use, but boy oh boy was I disappointed. As with the Pocket 1 and Pocket 2, I only use the Pocket 3 for when I'm shooting on my bike where the A7sIII 50 1.2 combo would be impractical.
DJI should make scooters next.

*I own the The FX30 and the ZV-E10 and the Dji Osmo Action4 AND Just got the Osmo Pocket 3 and NOW, I'm thinking I should get RID of my ZV-E10 and keep the Pocket3, but not sure*
All these big camera companies keep putting out vlogging cameras that have garbage stabe, the 1 thing you need to vlog is great stabe. Dji doesn't have a lineup of cameras so they keep just making the best thing. All we need is a bigger action 4 with adapters for all lense even apsc and it would bankrupt everyone else. Great image quality with rocksteady+ and you could use whatever lenses you want.
I definitely give shorter odds for DJI being able to take some market share by making an old paradigm camera system, than the other companies being able to innovate and compete with them.
This is the most convincing DJI Pocket 3 vlog , if you were in the market to buy this camera you clearly went directly to Amazon to buy it 🙂
