  • I explored the so called 'ghost town' on the outskirts of Shanghai, China.
    Thames Town, located in the Songjiang District of Shanghai, is a meticulously crafted replica of a traditional English village. Completed in 2006, it features cobblestone streets, Tudor-style buildings, a Gothic church, and red telephone booths. Despite its picturesque charm and authentic British architecture, Thames Town is often misunderstood and mislabeled as a 'ghost town' by Western media. In reality, it serves as a popular backdrop for wedding photography, a residential area, and a tourist attraction. This video explores the true essence of Thames Town, dispelling myths and showcasing the vibrant life and community that thrives within this unique Shanghai neighborhood.

    people think it's extraordinary that China can build British looking cities.. but the truth is there's lot of British looking building already in down town Shanghai along the bund in front of the Huangpu river some of them are a hundred years old.. and nobody says anything when the British build Indian looking building like the Georgian Brighton pavilion with Chinese interior or the pagoda at Kew garden.. there hundred more oriental building in London and all over Europe.. how come everything is so one sided..

    I have met a young couple in Thailand recently. They were from US and flow to Singapore and they were traveling from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and then to Cambodia and Vietnam and before going back to US.
    We have happened to have a casual friendly conversation and I have asked them since they are so near to China, why not go to China just for a few days to see China. I told them China is very interesting. But I was surprised of what they told me.
    They said according to all their media reports in US and advice by their government and many other people. They were advice and told not to travel to China. Even their parents don't allow them to go to China. They were told China is not a safe country to travel. Very dirty, poor rundown infrastructures, poor transportation system, polluted, homeless people are everywhere waiting to rob tourists are common even in broad daylight. Chances of been detained for no reason by the Communist government is very high. Because China is an authoritarian state and all foreign visitors are monitored by thousands of cameras everywhere and every minute where foreign visitors go. Foreign visitors from western countries can be detained for months or even years for no reason.
    All these is what they know about China. The couple is like below 25 years of age and already so badly brainwashed by their government and controlled media. This is really sad.

Pollution there and mid / north china in general is over 100 aqi 247 and usually over 200 aqi. That itself is mind blowing and makes you ill. It is also increasing with the 1 coal power station being built every 1.5 months. On the face of it china is alright but the constant smoking of nearly every male, the lack of general hygeine amd cleanliness plus the massive 247 aqi levels makes it a disaster. Anywhere I. Europe even being homeless would be far healthier and I'm heavily neutral on the matter.

    Serious Question Harvey:
    Did you grow up in a rough part of the UK or are you influenced by western media?
    When I go back to my home village near Southampton there's little to no crime -- can't recall ever actually seeing crime growing up in UK.
    But of course we see it blasted all over the media.
    Now, friends in Manchester couldn't even walk down the street without worrying -- hence my question.
    My Chinese experience is that I didn't see crime, except when someone stole my wife's moped from Wanda -- in the moped parking spot.
    And crime isn't mentioned in the media, it's very positive media -- which is a good reinforcement for Chinese people.
    But, speak Chinese and really get into deep conversations with Chinese and you soon start discovering other crimes -- take for example, a mother who is crying about a kindergarten using gutter oil where her child attends (true story)
    Chinese people aren't violent. And tend not to steal.
    But fake products (I'm not talking counterfeit), and gutter oil is a serious problem.
    Please learn the language. And explore the depths of Chinese psyche.
    While I agree on the whole it generally has moved in a good direction, your smugness about "no crime" tells me you are still shallow in this culture.
    Money is god in China -- This can leads to crime

    • @Harveyinchina
      @Harveyinchina  4 месяца назад +5

      I think I’m at the point now where no media could influence me.
      As for your village near Southampton, I guess it’s Fareham, Buelieu, Havant, or somewhere along the New Forest? These are very affluent upper middle class areas, that of course aren’t prone to too much crime, thanks in part to many positive socioeconomic factors.
      However, if you were to walk into Southampton city centre, you would be exposed to crime. There’s no doubt about it. People injecting hard drugs in the street. People being mugged in hoglands park. People being stabbed in St Mary’s.
      Or pop across to Portsmouth, you’d see the same or worse.
      I am speaking from personal experience.
      Fake goods may be a problem, may be less so now than 20 years ago (and getting better every day), but it’s the violent and sexual crimes that really f*cks up a society.
      I would rather risk having a meal made with gutter oil (unlikely) than be violently attacked in the street

    • @kevinwu8751
      @kevinwu8751 4 месяца назад

      He's a liar. Even Western anti-China media are reporting that China's gutter oil is being exported to the US to make jet fuel.

      @stee12318 4 месяца назад +3

      @@Harveyinchina So you’re telling me you personally saw these crimes?
      I didn’t see them last time I visited.
      I regular went to the center.
      And I did a pub crawl with an old friend and walked back across the bridge back to where my Dad now lives.
      As for China, you’re experience is affluent areas. You live in Shanghai. Clean and polite people compared to poor places I’ve seen. You go to city centers. It’s the other way around compared to the west for wealth.
      Raising a kid I’d be concerned with food safety.
      Fake milk, gutter oil, fake vaccines.
      Best way to avoid it is to get imported goods, and pay that extra price.
      Again, likely in Shanghai you’re less likely to get into the mess of the problems. But still worthy to be vigilant.
      These are serious conversations I’ve had with locals in poorer areas about these issues.
      Plus, I used to live in an area that locals told me had high heroin use.
      So, it’s not all sunshines and rainbows.
      I do wish the best for you in your life in China.
      Just keep a critical mind.

      American who has lived in China for 25 years and I speak Chinese. Yes there were gutter oil, poison baby powder, even 2 RMB fake Coca Cola but they are all gone, eradicated just like it’s extreme poverty. China is by far the best economically managed country in the world. It was ranked first in the 2023 Ipsos survey of Happiest Countries. Home ownership in China is near 90% with near 80% equity. Many farmers in remote villages now have 5G and 4K TV at home. There is no comparison between China and West over crime rates.

    Is there a fish and chips shop, a pub and a grocery store nearby? Oh, and a day market?
    That's the very essence of an English town....
