    About Cole & Charisma:
Welcome to the official Roll with Cole & Charisma RUclips channel! Since the start of our relationship we've
gotten a lot of questions about our experiences as not only an interracial couple, but an interabled one as well. On
this channel you can catch us doing travel and adventure vlogs, challenges, our inclusion series, couple first times, music, and so much more! We started this vlog to bring people into our lives, to answer some questions about how we navigate the world, and hopefully raise awareness surrounding accessibility and dating in a wheelchair. You'll quickly see in our episodes that we're all about inclusion and keeping a great attitude no matter your
circumstances, so if that's what you're into, you're in the right place!

In January of 2019, my husband was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. Although, he responded well to treatment for a year, he developed a platelet cytoma/tumor in his pelvic bone in December. The tumor quickly grew and invaded his spinal nerves, rendering him a paraplegic. He was admitted to the hospital with lower extremity weakness, but soon lost complete use of his legs. As I sat at the hospital trying to wrap my brain around the situation, I often thought of reaching out to you guys. Unfortunately; Peter lost his battle and just passed away. Needless to say, my children and I are broken. He struggled so much with the loss of his legs, but I didn't care. I have been in love with him for 27 years, and was going to love him, regardless. God had a different plan for us, though. Charisma, you are so strong and generous with your heart, and I now understand how painful it is to watch someone that you love so deeply, struggle.
So proud of you both!!! 😘💖🤟💔

I call it my crumb catcher because when I eat sometimes crumbs fall in the "hole" lol. The way you described your feelings is exactly how I feel.. The feeling of being hungry and such. The deep inner feeling. Keep the videos coming they are very helpful to those who have recently become paralyzed.

I was interning in the trauma unit before I became a nurse. I remember this young man had just been stabilized after a roll-over car accident. He was just 22 years old. I remember looking at him and realizing he had his entire life before himself and all he could move was his mouth. I don't think it had dawned on him that he was never going to move independently because he was texting friends with a pen in his mouth. I wanted to see if he needed anything and he got annoyed with me for interrupting his conversation in that young person way. I was heartbroken knowing there would come a day and time that he would come to terms with his situation. Seeing Cole living his best life with Charisma gives me hope that young man found his way.

I had a serious leg injury at 9 years old, and I can absolutely attest to Cole. When you discuss parts of the injury or scars, You can literally “feel” that pain all over again, even after years and years!!! I absolutely HATE it when my scars are touched!!! Our scars = trauma and just like our minds, our bodies remember the good the bad and the ugly!! I’m going in for my 11th operation on Monday 🤦‍♀️ and it will hopefully elevate some of the arthritic pain that’s now in my hip from years of walking with the original trauma that was set in traction incorrectly. I also have spasms because my nerves have been pinched in places. It’s horrible and annoying. Mine is mostly spasmodic bladder so you can just imagine how often I have to pee lol 😂!!
Anyway, I just realize love watching you guys because even though we ALL have different trials in our lives, you remind everyone to always “stay positive”! 🙌 Such an important message!!! 💜🙌

This is so awesome! In March 2011 I was a passenger in a truck and we were crossing a train track! It was an unguarded crossing so the train hit the truck we were in! So we both got ejected and I had a traumatic brain injury (TBI), my lungs were collapsed, my back was fractured and my pelvis was broken! I was life flighted to USA Medical Center in Mobile Alabama where I spent 1 month in a drug-induced coma and from there I also spent 5 months at the Shepherd Center on the brain and spinal floor where I also had a tracheotomy, chest tube and feeding tube!! All my scares are numb so I can’t really feel them! Y’all are awesome:)

I’m glad you were able to make a recovery! Honest question, if you don’t mind me being so forward: how on earth does a driver end up being in the path of a train? I realize that such collisions happen frequently, and that some instances are just impatience (like when people drive around the barriers of guarded crossings), but I just can’t wrap my head around why one wouldn’t treat an unguarded crossing with at least the same respect as a stop sign, looking left and right before proceeding. It’s easy to jump to conclusions (“people are dumb!”), but I’d love to get insight from someone who was actually in that situation.

My father had a tracheal intubation for the last 1.5 year of his life during his struggle with ALS. I think I had a little PTSD over it, b/c anytime I saw someone with a trach tube or the hole, I would cringe. Have to say this is the first time in 8 years I could actually watch or listen to someone without gagging. PS: Cole - my dad had the same fear about drowning in the shower with the trach even though we told him he couldn't happen - thanks for making me laugh, buddy!

I suffered from transverse myelitis in Sept 2020 (in the middle of Covid isolation) at age 54. I am a quadriplegic (c4-c6, T4-T11, s3-S5) who has battled through to be able to walk again with a single point stick. I was lucky enough that there was a top neurosurgeon on duty the morning after I was brought into the ER overnight in terrible pain, rapidly watching my function disappear and no one could figure out why. He realised what was happening, got the treatment started and sat with me for 6 hours breathing along with me until things eased enough until I didn’t have to get a trach or go on a respirator.
That was a great description of Paraesthesia! I had a giggle to myself because I’ll think my leg is straight in bed and I look down and find it hovering a foot above the covers and bent backwards 😂.

After i was licensed, my patients became my teachers and I'm still learning and I love it more because of them. Thank you

Charisma, first of all great work as always with the videos and informing everyone its super important for all to understand these conditions. However, I’d love to know if you ever have those days where you are just tired, frustrated and feel overwhelmed with just being so depended upon by Cole. I love my hubby dearly, I wouldn’t change a thing about our life together but there are certainly days where I just feel drained and caring for him is that little bit more exhausting. I am not formally trained although I tried to do a carers course to help with learning how to provide care in a safe way without causing harm to myself however I could not complete it due to COVID. I really wish there was paid courses for informal carers to better improve how we provide care for loved ones.

If you haven't done so already, you might want to contact Medicaid. Medicaid varies state to state as far as what they will cover and the programs available. In Indiana, we have 3 Medicaid Waivers. The MR/DD waiver, the TBI (traumatic brain injury), and the A&D (aged and disabled) waiver. The waiver pays for both case mgmt hours and for a home health aide a few hours a day. Not sure if this info will help but I hope it will.

jackycook64 Thanks for the advise. I actually don’t live in the US, we are in Australia. We’re lucky enough to have what’s called the NDIS, National Disability Insurance Scheme, it’s very disorganised and many people don’t get the support or financial aid they need unfortunately but it’s better than nothing. We are thinking of looking into getting a formal carer for around the house but as for now his funding plan isn’t adequate enough to include this as he still is getting approval and reports done up for equipment e.g. wheelchair, adjustable bed etc. that and my husband refuses to have someone else give personal care due to bad experiences and being mistreated in the past.

    • @jackycook64
      @jackycook64 4 года назад

@@kerryb1234 You are welcome. I wish I could do more to help. I can definitely understand his concerns. I have seen a lot and have experienced some myself. And I am very glad you recognize potential burnout and are honest about it. It is so frustrating. It shouldn't take so long to get the assistance you need not to mention the amount of time it takes to research the programs and jump through the seemingly endless hoops. You might try contacting long term care facilities. Even though you are not looking to work in a facility, if you explain, they may be able to provide info on where you could get training that will help you and your husband. If I come across any info or can think of anything else I will let you know. Wishing you and your husband the best.
