  • Wheelchair users should be able to stay in their wheelchairs on flights. The solutions exist, but legislation needs to change so that the FAA is required to get it done.

    The airlines can lie to you and say it's about safety all they want; we all know it's really about greed and money. Having space on planes for wheelchairs that might not always be filled would mean fewer seats that would likely always be full. I'm sure the idea of not having every possible square inch of every plane crammed full of paying customers at all times gives the greedy folks at the top of the corporate chain severe heartburn. Like everything else, I'm sure it all comes down to money money money. Such a shame, and so unacceptable that it means disabled people can't go wherever they want and need to go.

    • @i.am.mindblind
      @i.am.mindblind 4 года назад +3

      They could have regular seats that could be designed to clip into place if no wheelchairs were on the flight. Minivans have removable seats, it can be done. Plus if airlines allowed wheelchairs on planes more disabled people would fly and I bet there would rarely be an empty wheelchair spot.

      Katie Marsh Not really. If there would be more disabled people than „normal“ people it would be the other way around. And then the „normal“ people would complain. It seems like for airlines its all about money and they care less about a few people with special needs, cause they have enough costumers who are satisfied.

    Great to see light being shed on this topic! I am a C5 quadriplegic. In the last year I have flown seven times. None of which have been a smooth or easy process. The worst situation took place following a crash landing onto the runway. Resulting in significant damage to the plane and requiring immediate evacuation. The airline had absolutely zero preparedness for getting me off the plane. I was asked several times “can you take just a few steps“. Once I was off my wheelchair was not accessible until late late later. The complete lack of preparedness for someone of my situation continued. They tried to put me in an aisle chair which I refused. My best option eventually was a general discharge from the hospital after a knee surgery wheelchair. Important medical equipment for my evening and morning routine’s remained on the plane until afternoon the following day which created in myriad of problems. All along I was assured and reassured everything would be returned to me shortly. As the day progressed into the evening and it was evident the airline had no plan for me paired with escalating pain due to inadequate seating I was taken to the ER. All of this took us back to the drawing board to rethink how we should better prepare ourselves for these situations. However, it takes two....Airlines badly need to improve their accommodations for our population

      Therapy horses?!?! Gaa! I miss traveling so much. I have a condition called Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, which is basically extreme allergies. When they started allowing pets on planes, I started going into anaphylactic shock more and more often when I'd fly. And they make me- who has absolutely no say in my condition- wait around for another flight rather than the person choosing to bring a pet. There is no person on this earth who is well enough to fly but not well enough to be separated from their miniature horse for an hour.

    The Air Carriers Access Act only applies to US airlines and any foreign airline that has flights to or from the US. If KLM never touches the US, then the ACAA doesn't come into play. It is indeed sad that wheelers are excluded in the EU. But until they also have their own ACAA, there's not much USAers can do except be squeaky wheels who speak only in terms of money.
    A Google search shows that the airline DOES have flights into the US so they should have to comply with the law. Doesn't mean they will. Could also mean that they only use the bigger, more "accessible" planes for those flights. Their smaller planes would not apply. I think. Regardless, major PITA.

    I signed the petition, wrote a narrative and then posted it on Twitter. My husband just recently died (July 26) and wasn’t able to return to his home in Kenya because of the same malarkey. His accident happened here in the States. It wasn’t fair that he wasn’t able to go back home to see family when his chair would have been safer than a airline seat.
    Great job advocating all of you!❤️

    So Thankyou for making the airlines aware of their discrimination. I’m glad you’re joining in on the fight, I’m glad such a strong couple/family are fighting. This is my story:
    I travel all over the world. When I get home I need 2-3 weeks of rest for my mental health. Otherwise I’d have a breakdown with what I have to deal with... accessibility and discrimination.
    I got back from a 5 week trip around Portugal and cried for a solid 5 days, I was that exhausted. Plus I had broken toes from Emirates airline banging my feet into the walls- so I had to recover mentally and physically.

    “Customer care, this is Jayden, how can I assist you this evening?”
    “Hi, I was calling to see what information you could give me on transporting a wheelchair for a disabled person in my party on an upcoming flight to Krakow. I’ve had to deal with loads of hassle with this issue before, and I know some planes have different sized cargo doors so I wanted to see what was the maximum size or weight limit for a passenger’s wheelchair?”
    “Well I’m glad you asked. Just to give you a heads up, there are a number of things you have to do, but I’m here to walk you through all the procedures and it’s really nothing too difficult, you just need to follow a simple series of steps, does that sound alright?”
    “Um ok, so where do I start?”
    “First, you must abandon all your worldly concerns and leave Earth’s gravity on a trajectory to Jupiter. There, you will be intercepted by a black monolith which will bend the fabric of spacetime, teleporting you to a cosmic realm of pure chaos, eldritch mysteries and dark energy which will irreversibly fracture your psyche and awaken the long-forbidden senses of the mind. You shall awaken in a room wherein you shall have to face your greatest foe of all: a living incarnation of your own frail mortality. Ye will be reborn as a star child and hurtled toward Earth, but an unfamiliar Earth from a sister dimension. This world will be a dark phantasia of horrific wonders and beautiful terrors, of dreaded monumental cities and tombs of Elder Gods buried betwixt the waters, but you mustn’t let yourself be led astray from your sacred quest. After 99 successive virginal and ascetic lifetimes of pure and noble deeds, you will at least be approached by The One Guardian of the Threshold and given a golden amulet. Finally, you must thrice perambulate the Aetherworld portal widdershins before a bridge troll will ask of you three riddles. Answer wisely, and the golden amulet will open, revealing the Vespertine Gem of the Undying. Cross the bridge, defeat the dragon inside the lair, rescue the crystal princess, and place the blood of the dragon and the holy Vespertine gem into the Chalice of Uhltroar. If the wraiths of the fallen kings of old deem ye worthy of spirit and of deed, then, and only then, may ye be granted the passage ye seek for your disabled party member and successfully arrive in Krakow without having to cancel your hotel reservations and other plans.”
    “….So he can’t just bring his own wheelchair onto the plane and sit in the goddamn thing? And....did you say widdershins?”

      If my 2014 minivan can make four built in car seats disappear in hidden under feet compartments with the expertise of none other than a chunky 36 year old housewife(me). Then a high tech plane company can figure something out too. They just don't want to. No wasting money on seats that have to be permanently removed causing loss of revenue. And no wasted space for when there is not a need for a wheelchair spot. And before I had a 2014 minivan I had a 1998 minivan where the whole back row unlocked and could be removed from the entire car. It was heavy as crap, but removable and returnable without damage or safety issues. So if Dodge can figure it out so can Boeing.

    Unfortunately I think what it all comes down to is $. The airlines would have to give up one and possibly two seat positions on every plane that most of the time would go unused and paid for. I’m not saying it’s right, just a reality.

    • @Drbethturtlewoman
      @Drbethturtlewoman 5 лет назад

      Steven Brogdon totally agree, it's all about money, they would have to modify the plane to remove 2 standard seats and then add them back when the wheelchair is gone. It's like making morbidly obese people purchase 2 seats if they Can't safely fit in 1 seat.

    • @inalaska1208
      @inalaska1208 5 лет назад +1

      Completely either they're asking for an area the plane to be constantly set aside for a possible wheelchair user. Which again only means that that one spot could be used by a wheelchair user which actually restrict the number of flights that a wheelchair user could be on. Or they're asking flight crews to be able to remove one or multiple rows of seats and turn it around and make it wheelchair friendly in the amount of time between flights. Which from my experiences usually about 30 minutes from The last passenger getting off to the first sets of passengers getting on on a good day. Understand how frustrating it must be but honestly I don't see how you can force airlines to do it legaly. Time between flights end flight logs are actually incredibly monitored and restricted by the faa. It wouldn't be unreasonable for an airline to say that it just increases the chances of them needing to cancel a flight astronomically which is against the rules of the FAA to begin with.
      I have actually seen airlines that are more medically friendly but you kind of have to look out for them specifically. For example I had a friend who is in a car accident on her honeymoon in New Zealand. After spending two months in the hospital in New Zealand she was finally able to return to the United States but at that point she was still medically fragile enough that she could not get out of a hospital bed. She was able to work with a commercial airline company that removed several rows of seats to install her hospital bed in the airplane but it took weeks of planning.

    • @sinjon
      @sinjon 5 лет назад

      It would still be paid for by the person occupying the wheelchair. Just because they’re in a different type of chair doesn’t mean the airline isn’t getting their money

      @stevenbrogdon3074 5 лет назад +2

      N Stj you are missing my point. Yes. They would be willing and would be paying for the spot. The economics of that is that that access would have to be done n almost all planes so every wheelchair bound could get everywhere. I seriously think the airlines are willing to do this. It’s just a reality of life in the world as it is now.

      The Air Carrier Access Act only applies to any leg of your trip that is within the US, departing from the US or arriving to the US. It is very frustrating I know. As an American expat living in Germany I can say that there is nothing as good as the American's with Disabilities Act here in the EU. I've heard the UK isn't too bad, but here in Germany it was hard for me to find doctors whose offices are accessible. Personally I only take trains within Europe, because I can stay in my chair. In USA the ADA act is a 'mere suggestion'......Europe, elsewhere have nothing comparable. Some Nordic countries are WAY ahead of all of us, some countries (India, South Asia) are soooooo far behind they don't even have hand rails on stairways for regular people. First off, love you guys, but I feel the need to point out a statement that could maybe mislead some of your viewers. It doesn’t affect me at all as I have nothing to do with KLM or any other airline (for the time being as I am finishing flight training). So, Shane isn’t actually being denied on certain flights because of his disability, as Hannah stated at 1:10. Most of the video focuses on the fact that the wheelchair is the issue. I agree that the staff wasn’t helpful and you guys pretty much helped yourselves as you found the solution going through Warsaw and such. But, I also get that the airline isn’t prohibiting Shane from boarding the flight due to his disability, don’t confuse one with the other. Of course the wheelchair is due to his disability, but that doesn’t mean that not allowing the wheelchair is not allowing a disabled person on a plane due to the disability. As Hannah says, that’s against the law, but KLM isn’t infringing upon those terms; he can board the flight, they just can’t find a way to fit the chair through their cargo doors.

      Nope. Your logic is the same as airlines saying women can fly, but they have to be inside a suitcase. It’s such a ridiculous, impossible rule that it would ban women from flying. Not accommodating a wheelchair essentially bans people with wheelchairs (aka, disabilities) from flying. All the being said, we know that the nitpickers who defend the law would side with you, but that’s ridiculous and it’s what we want to change.

      Squirmy and Grubs I’m with you guys. I do wish for people to be able to stay in their chairs (of course as long as it’s proven to be safer, I understand from your video that it’s still in the testing phase) and I’d be happy to sign petitions (if it helps as I’m writing from Santa Cruz, Bolivia). So, hopefully legislation can be passed in that matter. Again, I do side with you when it comes to changing things such as these (in my country for example, I am helping with traffic laws as well as a slash and burn law that as I write this comment allowed the uncontrolled burn of now 1,000,000 acres of the Amazon rainforest, and yes, the number is correct, 1 million acres in my country, brazil has its own number of acres) I just don’t agree with that specific comment from Hannah. The chair just doesn’t fit, I mean, there’s no legal argument or legislation that’s going to change that. Anyways, I hope that my first and second comment ever on your channel doesn’t make it seem like I don’t like you guys or don’t understand all the good you are doing because I truly do. I guess I just have this thing with being extra careful with how you say things. Greetings from Santa Cruz, Bolivia. Ps (my sister lives in saint paul, mn and saw hannah in a rest, she couldn’t remember where she “knew” her from and later texted me saying “I saw that girl you showed me the video of (I told her to watch the vid where Shane sings a little diddy and the one where Shane tries to get sponsored by holiday inn telling her it was the hardest I had laughed in so long). Best regards to you both 🤗
