      Fixing the problem of one broken tap would make one cautious about future tap use. I didn't do it but was handed a broken tap job.A Chinesium tap.Harder than the hinges of Hades so I shattered it with a small chisel and the cast threads survived. I told them no more glass Chinesium taps. That was lucky.

    Warren Dennis here. You should try and use a little bit more magnesium possibly and lots of water my cramps are constant because I course did the same thing you did done a lot of wrenching for a lot of years and the Magnesium makes a big difference on joints and some of the some of the cramps that I get for the muscles stuff like that. And be careful it can get worse if you're not careful with how hard you push yourself! I can only work a couple hours before I've overdone it and I pay heavily for the muscle cramps I get now!! Great work on so many Bolt repairs!!

    Hey Warren, regarding the problems with todays youth. I recently read a book where the author wrote a foreword explaining how the changes from a farming / physical work type society to more sedimentary society has robbed the youth of the experiences that made us successful. Single parent homes, without a male role model, also seriously affect a young mans abilties. I know a young bright man who has experienced nothing that men who grew up in our generation experienced. He's having problems, such as you described, finding meaningful employment. The education means nothing without the life experiences.😢

    Here's my 'bad thread' story.
    I bought a pre owned cylinder head for my CAT C12 engine after I dropped a valve and had to do a forced inframe rebuild. It was $300, and included the injectors and Jake brakes. What I didn't notice about it was that the rearmost exhaust manifold stud hole had been repaired with a helicoil kit, and it had failed. There is a coolant manifold bolt that intersects perpendicularly with the exhaust stud hole, and the helicoil had already cut into that hole, so I couldn't drill it out and install a larger one. What to do? I bought a concrete wedge anchor at Home Depot, hammered it into the hole and torqued it down with my Milwaukee impact gun. YOLO! I expected it to fail within a few months. Here we are, 3 years and 200k miles later, and still no issues.

    Thanks Warren for another great video. And I’ve never had issues with helicoils either. I’ve always been told that as long as they are properly installed in a properly prepared hole they are always aa strong, but usually stronger than, the original threads, due to the fact that they are gripping a larger surface area on the OD of the helicoil than original. And also the fact that most helicoils are made of hardened/ hi strength stainless steel. Anyways, have a good one!

    Trying to teach a new apprentice how to chase threads on cast holes with a tap, bottoming tap was a test in patience. Starting a bottoming tap is not easy. Luckily out of 250 hole he only broke one tap, and it came out by hand. I bought a Metabo Cordless Tapping Drill, push forward it drives forward, pull back it reverses, probably the best tool have ever used for tapping holes. Could you have used a longer bolt with the lock washer and not bottoming out? I’m sure you know, they have a primer for the Loctite to make it cure better, keeps the oil out. Another Great Video, Warren. Thanks for the Videos.

I silver soldered a length of small fuel line into that end. put a slight bend on end of tube. Works really good as you can insert into holes and reach into tight areas and around obstacles.

    Telling us about that helper you had, your daughter's boyfriend at the time and how he had no feel for anything and that you couldn't teach him anything and he was bottoming out taps snapping them off reminded me of an apprentice/helper I was given to have to work with, to teach at a company I worked for.
    I was so tired of this guy. He couldn't do anything right.
    I had him running a drill motor with a 1 inch diameter auger on it.. He was pushing, struggling, cussing at it. I walked over and noticed that he was running the drill motor in reverse. I walked away without saying anything.
    After about half an hour of letting him wear himself out I walked over and told him to let me give it a try.
    I flipped the switch into forward, the auger pulled itself through the hole in about 10 seconds. I said, 'well, that didn't seem so bad'. I flipped the switch back into reverse without him noticing, handed it back to him and went back to what I was doing.

    Couple of things to help with drilling holes in cast iron like you were doing here...
    The bit you were using had a pretty aggressive cut ground on it. Take it to a bench grinder and make the cut a bit more shallow by flattening the cutting edge down a bit more, in relation to the relief cut that is now ground into it. That will help with it not 'catching' as bad as it was.
    Also, when drilling, increase the speed of your cut, but add much less pressure to the drill... This way you will be taking much more shallow cuts, with a much less chance of the bit catching.
    Hope this helps some...

    Some people like helicoils and some don't. Myself, I've used them but only as a last resort. If I was doing this job, I would have drilled out the holes to 5/16 and then re-tapped them with a 3/8-16 tap. Then drill out the holes in the bearing retainer plate to 13/32 and bolt it back together with 3/8-16 x 1 inch 8 grade bolts with lock washers and red thread locker and sleep tight at night. Warren has repaired many more things than I have and feels confident in his repair and will sleep tight at night. I'm just that confident in helicoils.

    • @gmcsierraable
      @gmcsierraable Месяц назад

      If you look closely you'll see that the bolt holes are very close to the edge of the trans case and bearing retainer plate. Warren said it wouldn't leave much material left on the edge if he drilled out the holes to the next size.... but you do you booboo, sleep tight lol

    • @TheLangko
      @TheLangko Месяц назад +2

      @@gmcsierraable Yes, Warren said that it wouldn't leave much material if he drilled it out to the next size. Then he took a drill bit that is .332 inch to drill them out for the helicoil tap. To drill it out to accept the next size bigger than a 5/16 bolt would require drilling them out the right size for a 3/8 bolt. A 3/8-16 tap requires a drill size of .312 inch which is .020 inch less than the .332 hole he drilled for the helicoil tap. Different people do it different ways. Like I stated in my original post, I only use helicoils as a last resort. Seems to me in this case that drilling a smaller diameter hole than the helicoil tap required and then tapping it out to 3/8-16 threads would have left more material in the transmission housing and provided the additional strength of 3/8 bolts versus 5/16 bolts to hold the bearing retainer plate.

    "The Kid": dealt with my share plus. I always wondered how they were able to take a morning dump and remember to wipe afterwards. Soft parenting is probably the root cause.

    I got into an argument with someone on the side of the 99 because his truck had a broken crank, and he wanted me to get it started so he could get it to the shop. You can't talk sense into some people.

    Warren, won't help now, but if you have a mag drill, you could clamp or bolt a hunk of scrap plate across the that bellhousing and use it as a drill press instead of struggling with a hand held drill.

    You're right about young people these days. They want the money and not do the work. It's a good thing you fired his ass. You have a lot of patience Warren. Great job on the tractor.

    Hi Warren , nothing wrong whith helicoils when properly fitted by some one that knows what their doing, and thereby comes the rub. Lots of people shouldn't be let loose whith a wheelbarrow, never mind a wrench, but you can't educate PORK, lol. Although someone out there is sure to tell me differant. Same goes for marriage, if it ain't working after wfe No, 2 , then life's trying to tell ya something, personal opinion here. Keep on keeping on mate, best wishe's to you and your's, and the doggies. Stuart Uk.
