- On day 33, I hiked from Clyde Smith Shelter to Overmountain. There used to be a big red barn like shelter here, but it was taken down earlier this year. I had a great day hiking up and over Roan Mountain and the surrounding highlands.

I'm a local East Tn Hiker and the Roan Mountain area is one of my favorite places to hike, during the autumn, the views are incredible.
A little bit about the legendary Cloudland Hotel, built atop Roan Mountain in 1885, maintenance of the massive structure on the harsh, high elevation, North Carolina mountaintop became too much of a strain and the hotel was abandoned in 1910. Wind, snow, and rain quickly took their toll and by 1915 the hotel was falling to the ground. Today, little remains of the hotel other than a forest service marker providing information about the hotel’s glorious heyday.

The leaves at 2:35 are bunchflower which will bloom with white flowers on a stalk in about 6 weeks. More leaves than flowers.

You are flying along this trail girl! You're doing great! It's a shame that you had fog over that stretch of the mountains. I think that the Roan Highlands are the prettiest place south of the Mason-Dixon Line. The Balds are incredible.

Just recently read about the Cloudland Hotel. Quite a resort for it's era.
The others I am following this year didn't have good weather on Roan either, yours was nicer to hike in!

Literally where you are camping at over mountain shelter is my favorite place to camp. I hate you couldnt see the views on jane bald 😢 but that sunrise if you make it to hump mountain is breathe taking ❤
