I think we all are very heartbroken with the devastation in Appalachia. We've gotten to go along on the trail with you and others that have hiked it and fallen in love with the beauty of the area and are trying to make sense of the loss too. Many have family there as well, as I do, and are starting to see things being pieced together and roads reopen now! Hurray! Go Ziggy!

I'm picking up what you're subtly throwing down. There's stress at home now that you're back and have changed and grown over the last half a year. You're not feeling happy or content. Things probably feel off, your goals may have changed, and maybe you're even questioning if your life path now makes sense with who you've become. Feeling unsettled is hard. How do you tell someone you want to be alone right now to figure things out, when you don't have any answers? It's tough. Spend lots of time out in nature, meditate, let your inner voice and intuition speak to you.

The devastation due to the hurricane and flooding is very sad. I also am not surprised that coming home is a hard adjustment. You are very fortunate that you were able to do the AT. I enjoyed watching your progress every day. You are very blessed that you have a loving husband and a happy dog to come home to. It's awesome how your work family welcomed you back. I haven't done what you've done, so I can't speak from experience, but I'm guessing that it's probably going to take quite a while to settle back into the new you! From what I can tell, you are a very well-rounded person, and that's a huge plus. My prayers are with you. Thank you for the updates ❤

Hi Molly/Mojo, thanks so much for showing us your struggle as you work your way back to society. I'm glad you had the experience you did on the AT & I suppose you'll learn with some times & reflection just how the Trail changed you. You'll find that balance & it sounds like you've got a good perspective on what's going on. And the damage to the Trail & the trail towns must be sickening since you just came off that magical trail. Give yourself some time & grace. I look forward to your checking in & sharing your life with us. Happy hiking, dear one.

Well geez, Molly, that was a hard watch. I have to say that your transition back to your 'regular' life can''t have been made any easier having heard about all the devastation that's occurred in all the places you've just been. Towns that you adored, memories of places now suddenly swept away, i AM glad that you're reaching out to other through hikers who 'get' what you're feeling and know what you're going through. I am sure that each person you've reached out to was also having post trail struggles and really appreciated that conversation. I know you never met Sassafras and merry gang of through hikers but she just posted that she's working for The Trek! Anyways, I hope that the people close to you are supporting you through this without too much judgement. They may not understand what you're feeling but hopefully they are empathetic. Doing stuff that exerts you, a marathon, some hiking and camping, trail runs and other things I might be missing are all things that can help ease the feeling of loss. Mojo and Molly ARE the same person one of the them nobody but fellow hikers really know and may never really and the other is the married university worker. Only you can really decide how these two can coexist, but you'll never be truly happy if you try suppressing Mojo. She's strong, as is Molly, she has all these newly acquired skills and she's a bad ass. I am so excited that you're running (have already run) a marathon and it would not surprise me to find out that you ran it in less than 3:30 and probably faster. Thanks for the update on Ziggy who must be done by now. Thanks for the honest and tearful update!

Every post AT hiker has somewhat similar feelings. As an older(68yo) section hiker like me and my hiking buddy- Philmont and Ranger- we completed the last Maine section and Katahdin July/2023 (over 18yrs of total sectioning), we miss the trail and talk of it almost weekly. In truth, we never totally leave the trail. In fact, we started again, 3 sections of southern AT this year. Part of the issue of course, is there are no bad days on trail, none! Hard days, long days, cold, wet, hot- but not bad, just different. And at the end of each day there is a sense of accomplishment; goal achieved. On trail there is shared community, no judgement, and live is simple - get from point A to B with all your stuff safely, then repeat again the next day- no deadline. And for the most part we control those days- long, short, nero, zero. Life off trail isn't always that way- there sometimes are deadlines and expectations, and things out of our control, some unpleasant. You mention that in your last video. In many ways, I am glad we sectioned hiked - there was, yr after yr, the anticipation of the next hike. In the interim we each raised great kids, welcomed grandkids, have great marriages, and great jobs. You have the same - wonderful husband, a job, and maybe kids to come(?). Yes, you are a different person in some respects- confident, strong, battle-tested, self sufficient and so on. But, you are also the same Molly Rose that started hiking in March. Same and different at the same time! Now trying to figure out how both fit together. I have really enjoyed retroactively watching your thru hike - I happened on it a few weeks ago while looking at other thru-hiking content, gear videos, etc. I am now working my way through your hike. I can reminisce through you prior AT hikes. Your videos bring joy and uplifting info to others - be proud of that. Thanks! Maybe that helps. Mighty fun hiking. Philmont

Be patient with yourself and let yourself be changed because you are. That was a massive adventure! When I’ve travelled overseas for work for even short periods I have found it can be a challenge to adjust back to everyday life. Everything feels different at first and I need time to adjust.

Hey, good luck with the race (maybe already run by now?). Hopefully you have somebody to drive/feed/take care of you when you finish, as I have heard that marathon aftermath is fairly dire, even if you do well. But you know that in addition to the physical training, you have a new wealth of mental toughness, patience and persistence. I think that will serve you well. Although you know this, please remember that this transition back to non-trail life is hard for everyone -- or everyone who is honest about it. It's good that you are talking with other thru hikers to keep yourself in the community. Just remember that you will always be a thru hiker. And you don't have to stop backpacking. It's part of you, and this doesn't have to be the end. It's just a matter of integrating it into your life going forward, and you will find a way to do that.

To a much smaller scale, intensity, and duration, I understand the sadness of departure from the woods and the trail community. This happened to me as a section hiker every time; asking myself exactly why I was going home. When you live with that kind of purpose every moment, carrying your life on your back, working in unison with Ma Nature, you change. I can't imagine 6 months. 😢 It breaks my heart a little. You're a full glass of water right now, and I'm sure every drop feels like an overflow. Let yourself grieve Molly. I'm glad you're staying in touch with tramily. They are the only ones who understand completely. There's no way to do something like this and not emerge a different person. You summited Katahdin a stronger, more confident, new and improved Molly. 😊 One step at a time, one moment at a time. Be patient with yourself. I'll be sending prayers of peace and healing from Maine for you. 🙏 I'm thrilled you're running a marathon! You're gonna do great. Take care and rock on Ziggy! ✌️

It's getting really cold even where I am in southern new england. I saw pictures of Mt Washington it was already snowing and I think the weather was something like 50 mph winds at 25 degrees. I wouldn't want to be climbing Katahdin in November that's for sure

Molly , when I was your age I traveled overland through Europe and Africa. The challenges I faced every day strengthened me as a person both physically and mentally. When I returned home, I actually felt bored with my daily life. I went from having to make many decisions every day to having to make just a few. My family never understood why I went in the first place, and I was never able to explain why. The answer is simple, I enjoy the challenges of being uncomfortable and pushing myself personally to be able to succeed. I have been fortunate enough to travel extensively since then and I still enjoy conquering the unknown that different places bring. I’m not sure if this will help, but there are many people like you that always wonder what’s around the next corner, and aren’t afraid to go find out. I wish you the very best - be proud of your accomplishments and continue to strive for more.

If my memory serves me you did the Damascas marathon on trail with a 30# pack didn’t run just climbed up and down. Know you had some tough days on trail this is different as are you, the same thing is that things change meanwhile do what you gotta do hike 20+ miles and camp then repeat or do what you need to do now. Four me this is always tough time of year, whether summers over back to school or less sunshine each day. Weather great in New England but soon will be more dark and grey. Then just Waiting for ski season. Happy Trails dry toes and good luck on your first”running” marathon. 😎

Mojo, I wish the transition was easier for you. Post trail life can be a total bitch at times because you are not who you used to be and the people in the real world just don't understand that. You will never be that person again; you have a better understanding of yourself, and your personal life has been a little more fine-tuned, but everyone expected "Molly" to be back. They are not ready for Molly 2.0. It does get better and easier. You will adapt more as the time passes and so will they. You will learn to cope with your new insight into life and they will slowly adapt to the new Molly. It's all part of the process and almost everybody goes through it. Trust me, IT WILL GET EASIER! When you're down and things just aren't happening like you thought or want, reach out and talk to other hikers. They probably need it as much as you do! I can tell you that YOU will have a home, family, town life that everyone including you will adapt to. You will also develop an even stronger off the trail, trail life with fellow hikers, even ones you never met yet but, those two lives sadly will never intertwine. In the end, you will develop more peace and calmness in your life, and that is the ultimate change that others will have to adapt to and live with. You OTOH, have been adapting to it ever since Springer. Talk to hikers, everyday just for a few minutes if that is what it takes. Think things through. Peace and calmness are your friends. You now have two families, and they will never meet, no matter what you do. geek Good luck with the marathon! Running marathons is my daughter's hobby. She is 48 years old, and she is trying to run one in all 50 states before she is too old to do it. She stated 6 years ago and is at number 12.

re: the marathon: Just like on the trail you need to hike your own hike, on the marathon - run your own race - except it really isn’t a race against the stop watch or the one runner next you. You win by completing the distance to the best of your ability. re: Others expectations of you I took great delight in seeing your smile and upbeat personality as you reported your progress on the trail. BUT you don’t OWE any of us a performance. You are treasured because you are you. As an imperfect Christian, I know that God’s grace is what I depend on. Lean on your faith, husband, family and friends. You are not on this journey by yourself.

Hope Ziggy makes it. The Whites are covered in snow on Monday and some snow and slush in Maine. Safe travels Zigman.

Hopefully this video is a week or two old, otherwise Ziggy's not going to make Katahdin because it closed on October 15th.

I know it's hard to hear but that person is gone for ever. Just be happy for the memories. It's like when I graduated from college. My friends who I had for years just vanished never heard from again. It's hard but now you have new adventures coming up and someday you can tell your grandkids all about your great hike

This was really a beautiful update. Raw and real. When I got off the Colorado Trail I found myself going through everything in the house and throwing out/donating a lot of stuff. I didn't know if it was extra energy to expend or an emotional response to having less to deal with for a few months prior. A backpack, a tent , food, warm clothes and water. Right? Simple really. I live in a small town in the mountains but it seemed so busy at first. SO many cars and people! It was overwhelming at first. Cooking was hard too. I am suppose to feed others? I don't remember what to cook or what to buy. I wasn't gone as long as you were either. It has gotten much better but I do wish I had someone to talk "trail" with. I am twice as old as you are and I was slow so I didn't end up with any tramily. I am sorry you are going through this but I do think you will find your MoJo. I always find planning my next adventure a really good way to move forward. Thank you for the video and I hope you continue to update us. You are loved. 💟💟💟

It is definitely an adjustment! I have been going through drawers and closets and getting rid of a bunch of stuff too. If you ever need someone to talk trail with, let me know!

@@mollyroseoutdoors Thank you! Yes, what is that cleaning/organizing/purging thing? I wonder if other people do it too?
