I have to admit as much as I've liked Ed Asner's work in the past with his roles in Up, Elf, Royal Pains etc. I never truly knew how good an actor he really was until I just saw this scene for the first time right now. WOW! Killer understated yet powerful performance all while still being able to be funny. This guy was the man for real. R.I.P. Ed.
...I remember seeing this Ep when "MTMS" was in syndication weekdays at 4pm, and even in 1977(?), I was flabbergasted at Ed Asner's ACTING! ...'Lou' internally fell apart (1:40), but rebounded FAST, when he knew he can handle his Wife leaving, for GOOD....they've all left us now...but, their classic WORK, remains....
I think the whole video still in Internet! I posted the episode complete a couple of weeks, but for some reason I can't find it anymore... That was the reason why I left the full name of the episode. But I will post it again!
Ed Asner is one of the finest actors I have ever witnessed. Just a brilliant actor, with amazing range. He could do it all. That good.
Top-drawer scene in a first-rate series. Ed Asner's internal collapse and rebound is something to behold. Understated and highly emotional.

That house in the exterior shot looks a lot like the Douglas's house in My Three Sons (the Bryant Park years).
Ed Asner at his best.
