Probably my favorite all time scene from The MTM show. You have to be a good singer to know how to sing this badly. Brilliant show, brilliant acting and Chemistry between MTM and Ed Asner, and of course brilliant writing. Great show no wonder it’s considered one of, if not the best, sitcom of all time.
I love how funny she is even just shyly working up the nerve to ask lou about her idea if singing. clearing her throat shyly and not looking at him. And then her awkward looking around when he describes it as a great torch song about "a woman who's really lived." Great writing, delivery by Mary and direction.
I still watch this classic show everyday on the Decades channel. It has joined the other classics where the whole cast is deceased. Gordy (John Amos) is the only one still living. 😔😔
Hands down one of my fave scenes in TV ever, I just randomly thought of this scene and looked it up. Lou’s making fun of her makes me laugh my ass off to this day.
Ed Asner was just a brilliant actor. People don’t realize how expressive and nuanced his acting was. He could manipulate, cajole, intimidate, be caustic, sarcastic, lovable, devious, terrifying,... or drop dead funny. Asner could go from one expression and emotion to another, in a flash, and do it brilliantly. Like Harrison Ford, Ed Asner had wonderful facial expressions, and major acting skills. Here’s to Lou Grant. The best boss ever.
I just started getting into The Mary Tyler Moore Show since September 2021 and I have to say as much as I liked Ed Asner in other things I had no clue how truly skilled and amazing he was as an actor til I started watching this show. That cast was one of a kind too. Like Mary and Ed, Ed and Ted Knight were also an incredible comedy duo. Remember the scene where Lou tells Ted he wasn't nominated for the Teddy award? Brilliant!
when first suggested for the part they it was a CRAZY idea. Asner was a classic 'heavy' and UNcomic chaacter actor.... only those who knew him knew how funny he was.
@@poetcomic1 Same thing with Ed O'Neill when suggested for auditioning for Al Bundy. Moye and Leavitt thought there were nuts because Ed never did comedy and mostly played heavies and other dramatic roles.
Yes! And the writers and directors knew how good he was so even in the brief sit com format gave Ed the opportunity to show layers to Lou's character. So Lou wasn't just a lone-note grump the way, say, Mel the cook was on the sitcom Alice. Lou was harsh and funny but he could also melt your heart, like in the episode when he watches his ex wife marry a new husband. Thanks, Es Asner and writers!
Such an incredible scene - where Lou's adoration of Mary won't let him directly criticise her awdul rendition - so he saves her by making her appear to be joking with him as a way of stopping her from appearing silly to others, Brilliant acting and writing!
@@leoray1234 Mary was intentionally awful in this scene. That’s what made the scene so funny. Remember she’s playing a character here, not herself. Both Mary and Valerie were dancers and seasoned actors.
@@leoray1234 The humor is no that she couldn't carry a tune but showing how innocent "mary richards" would try to sing a sultry torch song. And she did it beautifully.
Thank you so much for posting this brilliant scene. I grew up watching this series when it was originally broadcast, and it was always one of my favourite shows. The writing, the cast and the directing was perfection. And I remember howling with laughter the first time I saw this. Mary was usually the straight woman on the show, while the other actors like Valerie Harper, Cloris Leachman, Ted Knight, Betty White and Ed Asner got to be the funny ones around her. But MTM was a brilliant comedian when she had a chance, and she slays in this scene. Just as she also did in the final scene of the Chuckles the Clown episode, trying not to laugh during the clown's funeral. She gets the way shy, respectable, sheltered Mary Richards would sing a torch song like this, even when trying to make it smokey. Ed Asner is equally brilliant here. They were so good together. Some of my fondest memories of those years are watching this series.
+Diego Thorrens: OMG, I've heard this in my head for so long - Mary's version - such a classic moment, with Lou, giving Mary 'confidence' as she's singing in the most cliché'd of ways, - 'emphasising words with hand gestures. This is such a good, hard laugh for me, thanks so much for posting. 'Tear my heart out, baby,.sing it out' - Lou Grant
Also on RUclips, Georgia Engel performing Steam Heat from this same episode. Engel had a background as a dancer and musical theatre performer, so it was a surprise to show viewers that shy timid, soft-spoken Georgette could sing and dance so well.
Io che Nicoula non so parlare con la direttrice del supermercato dove lavoro i miei genitori che mi dicono non avere Giulio come al solito paura delle persone
I love the MTM Show, but one major thing I am disappointed about it is the fact that Mary doesn't really sing or dance in this show like she did on the Dick Van Dyke Show. In fact, Mary is supposed to be a bad singer in this series. I would have loved to see a thing like an annual WJM Talent Show episode where Ed, Mary, Gavin, Ted, and Betty White perform. Maude and Laverne & Shirley used to do musical episodes as a change of pace.
Georgia Engel sang and danced Steam Heat also on this same episode (it's on RUclips) because she liked to let her co-stars shine, but Mary herself didn't want this to be a repeat of what she did on Van Dyke show.

This is genius comic timing from MTM. Their chemistry was amazing.

Sad both are gone now. Mary Tyler Moore was special.
I HAVE LOVED THIS SHOW for 50 years!! His laugh is priceless!
One of the best clips showing the comedic genius of both Mary and Ed.
These two are just so great together!
4 of the best minutes ever on television.

Was she that awful? MTM could sing and dance in real life, of course, so if she sang badly, that would be acting, too.

@@Vejur9000 I would say she was intentionally campy. If she wanted to be truly awful she could’ve gotten the pitch wrong, but she didn’t.

Took several seasons for MTM to win the Emmy (Teddy?), she learned the importance of ensemble on DVD & as she said, this was the best 1 ever.

Glad You liked it
FAVORITE SCENE EVER.
I loved these guys so much.......classic...
Gooooooooooooood job Mary u did that song justice
This was a Very Special & one of a kind TV shows! I have forgotten a lot of TV shows that brought me so much pleasure.
Thank You!
Very memorable scene.
This was epic.....
If you’ve heard her sing on the Dick Van Dyke Show, Mary’s voice is actually pretty angelic😂❤️
Thoroughly Modern Millie & Breakfast @ Tiffany's on B'way.
I have seen her sing and this was just acting as if she can't belt out a song. She really can. LOL
I love Lou's laugh!
Love that clip...
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Love LOU'S reaction
Sorry Frank! Your rendition is great but for sheer joy and entertainment this terrific. Makes me smile every time!
Nobody better than MTM...now and forever.
love this scene... thanks for sharing
Absolutely awesome. Love you all.
LOVED this show!
🥰🥰🥰
Thank you…
Absolutely brilliant writing!!!
THAT is what as known as Advanced Chemistry in comic cting.

Buongiorno Nicoula e buon giovedì mattino
This would destroy Steam Heat. Why didn't she sing this?
Ti auguro un buon weekend Nicoula l'uomo che a distanza di 5 anni gira sempre un po' nei miei pensieri come la canzone che vita è d'Irene Grandi
Does anyone know which season and episode this one is from? Or the name of the episode? I would love to see the whole thing.
Season 7 episode 10 - Murray can't lose
@@molly-katebritton9414 This is the same episode where Georgia Engle performed Steam Heat, isn’t it?

Il Nicoula che sarebbe tanto felice di rivedermi
No datori di lavoro potete stare tranquilli sono single non sono sposato con figli
When Mary is singing for real, she reminds me of Éthel Merman, but without the vocal power
Scusa Nicoula ma tanto che ti piaccio?
huhu the whole last 3 seasons are no longer on RUclips
They are. Try a channel called Normy Bates
Giulio scappa
She sings "Darktown Strutters' Ball" much better.
Giulio io lo so che non eri in te quando hai scritto quelle cose e che eri solo arrabbiato
Nicoula Nicoula la gente quante risate si fa su di me riguardo te
Eh Giulio quando scrivi.....

She's not playing Laura Petrie here, recurring joke is how awful she is on-camera.

Yes. Like he's thin. & Mary is fat & bald.
