Yeah I wish there was one too. I bought a broken Saturn and fixed it but the previous owner got crazy with hot air and totally melted the slot. I made a pcb to take an action replay and makes it so you can solder it to the underside of the cartridge slot. It currently only fits on va0 and .5 for sure. It can be switched on/off and between action replay and pseudo Saturn kai.
I don't have any HDMI modded consoles, but I have FPGA consoles and I'm sure when the Retrotink 4K eventually comes out that I'll be setting the consoles to output at 480p and routing them through the Retrotink for better upscaling and crt filter options.
i love these videos. thanks. I've thought what Voultar said so eloquently for a while. All those fancy digital mods do is include their own scaling software. It feels more efficient to me to have an external scaler. More reliable, flexible, etc.
Agreed. If the barrier is strictly the extraction/conversion of the digital signal to native resolution HDMI, then leave the advanced processing to the external scaler. Give me a basic device, let me handle the rest with my external box of choice.
Nice! I finished an OpenTendo top loader as well and it's running great! It is much easier to put together than the original front loader OpenTendo, but the parts are MUCH harder to procure. Harvesting from a busted AV Famicom might be the best option, but it would require some playtesting. As the toploader is 1:1, you'll also get all of the horrible scanlines as the original if it's only RF. My next built I'll likely be doing NESRGB. 🤔 Can't wait to see when you live stream your own build!
I think there are so many complaints about unreliable Saturn cartridge slot is due to the use of the action replay carts. The official ram carts were beveled and chamfered so it wouldn’t damage the pins on the slot. The action replays were not and often crushed pins. Just a theory. Thanks for the video.
I've only had 1 Saturn and 1 action replay cart. They are basically married and I think I've reslotted the cart twice. When I open it to tape down the lid switch for cd swapping and when I opened it a 2nd time to install an ODE. I've heard what ruins the cartridge slot is the action replays because of the low quality not correctly beveled PCB/edge connector. Or maybe it's just swapping carts a lot. Memory card, 1M, and 4M RAM cart. King of Fighters carts if you have the real game. Couldn't say for sure. A cart mod is a cool low effort upgrade for anyone that wants and ODE and their disc drive still.
funny I found myself confronted with lawyers after one of the retro scaler manufacturer send a report to the hdmi consortium. even I had a valid licensed HDMI chipset the license schema changed, now requires to be part of the hdmi consortium ($10.000/year membership) and you need to pay per shipped unit a license fee. I had luck as my chipset vendor jumped in but if I hear someone implements HDMI without a valid license I need to warn you. it could be very expensive as you need to pay membership for all the years you sold your product and a fee on top. Btw the company sending the report was a famous one in scene....
The SAT Cartridge Slot really isn’t that reliable. I really hope theres a way to replace it someday with something better because it can be a hassle to get working sometimes.
I have a retro bit system it want play the 6pak cartridge. It recognizes it but says something about intended for use blah blah. Is there a way to rid the carts security feature?
My issue with hdmi mods is that they always sellout quick and then scalper sell them at an extremely high price and then many of the original creators ditch their products and don’t release source codes or even bom for us to do it ourselves
if your using lite to upscale a digital signal though, wouldn't you be stuck with the bob deinterlacing on it since that is all the lites support, otherwise it would just be 260p, or does it let you turn that off for upscaling

@@dubesinhower thank you very much. I’m trying to see where I can find the retro think 5x pro cause they seem out of stock. One last question, will the retro think 5 work with a stock n64? Same quality as a n64 hdmi mod?
A mod that would make Saturn cart slots 100% reliable would be waaaaay more desirable to yet another ODE.
I agree, I wonder how one would go about making/sourcing new cartridge connectors for the saturn

I can’t tell you how many saves I lost will that damn Saturn cart. Nothing but problems.
look forward to these every Sunday! Thanks for taking the time to bring us these tidbits of retro mod news!

That's great man..., but you know, the news I really wish I could hear one day is "Guess what, they're making CRTs again"
Sweet, now I can add this to my list of retro gaming news along with Bob from RetroRGB who does the same thing every week, too.

excellent work sir, much appreciated!

Yeah the cart slots on both my Saturn’s have gone funny, ie they don’t recognise that a cart is in the slot.
Hmmm.... I don't imagine the new OSSC beta fw will fix the sync issues with outputting SNES video at the higher resolutions... 🤔

I asked if the ps1 chips would all be the same , just different firmware to enable features, or if there would 3 separate chips.
Making everything digital will be way too expensive. A scaler is all we need.
Надеюсь китайцы начнут делать флешкартриджи для Сатурна, а то разновидностей ОДЕ для этой консоли больше чем для других, но ничего не купить :(

Direct 480i output will be an option for user with external scalers.
