    It's these videos that you make that I love. As a person who does a lot of retro electronic repair, many clients and friends ask for input about AV solutions for home theaters and such. I usually first direct them to your channel, because 9 times out of 10, you have a video explaining everything they need to know. You are truly a pillar of the community.

    Regarding @2:35 If all you need is a 2x1 switch, the "8K HEZOOMS HDMI 2.1 Switch Splitter" on Amazon does 48Gbps, so it supports 8K60 or 4K120, and it supports VRR and HDR. I use this to switch between an XBSX and PS5 to my one 48Gbps input on my AVR. I have used this for 6 months with no problems at all. And it's inexpensive.

    AVStar 8K@60Hz 4K@120Hz HDMI 2.1 Splitter is a 4k 120 splitter that can downscale the second port to 1080 120. AVStar 4K@120Hz HDMI 2.1 Audio Extractor Audio Converter is a 4k 120 audio extractor. There's a few 4k 120 switches, I'm currently looking at Kinivo's 8k 4.1 and daisy chaining it with another if needed with their 4k switches daisy chaied for retros. Kinivo's 4k 5.1 switches have one output on one side and an input on the other side so those are great to daisy chain.

    Hello Bob, and thanks for the detailed review of all these switches and splitters!
    I have an alternative version of the matrix switch shown starting at the 10 minute mark. Basically the same functionality, but a more square design and a different DAC(I suppose) with two 3.5 mm outputs and 2 SPDIFs. But that's not what I want to talk about. What I want to talk about is one thing that's exactly the same as with the one shown in the video - that GARBAGE included power supply.
    To anyone who might have it: I do not suggest using it if you have any kind of gear that's sensitive to EMI (and I know you do, you sweet analog-loving chum, you). When connected to the matrix, it would create terrible high-frequency whine akin to coil whine and all my HDMI sources would have a very distinct noise in their audio signals kinda similar to ground loop. I was going insane for a couple of days. Threw that power supply out and replaced it with a known good one - yup, works like a charm. No whine, no noise.
    Maybe I got a bad batch, maybe the unit shown in the video does not have this same problem, but considering they all come most likely from the same factory, and that power brick looks exactly the same, I'd wager it's not the best thing in the world when it comes to EMI shielding. Just a simple buyer beware. If you happen to notice something like what I described above, don't pull your hair out, it's an easy fix, but it's annoying nonetheless.

It makes it a lot easier to watch one of these videos than to scroll through posts on the websites when I'm researching something. Maybe make one of these general videos once a year or so? If that's not cost effective, maybe a public database with the testing results could achieve the same thing?

    I'd really love to see an HDMI 2.1 switcher with two simultaneous outputs. The idea here would be to connect things like the PS5 and XSX to it and send one output to the TV for video and the other output to a receiver for audio. Right now I use eARC, but the LG C9 I have has a bit of processing delay, especially when using Dolby audio, so I have to use LPCM instead. I suppose one day I could get a newer receiver that supports HDMI 2.1, but... that's not guaranteed to not add lag, so at least the option of a switcher that does what I want would be nice.

    • @wchill1337

      Look into the HDFury 8K VRROOM. It's basically the best switcher you're ever going to find. Pricy though.

    • @nickglover
      @nickglover 2 года назад

Along with the points you make on this video I'm specifically interested to know which ones are the best to support @120hz and display the selected input on a single HDMI display. I might be picking up TWO BZBGear BG-8K-HS41 for my needs but am wonder if there might be a 8x1 and higher that would be better or equal. At the moment I can find anything and one of my worries is if I'd have issues with two as they have IR remotes. • @marcus_cole_2
    @marcus_cole_2 2 года назад

    13:00 I'll tell you the exact reason for the HDMI audio extractor
    You have multiple HDMI devices on a hub AKA 8x1 some don't have arc optical or coaxial out or you want to listen to it via headphones or Bluetooth you need a pass-through like this perfect example my setup
    HDMI 2x1 daily use product (1) (2) all the entertainment equipment that is off on a 8x1 and far away from the receiver tv from there go to the ark extractor so I can have any and all things go to the entertainment sound system or a Bluetooth adapter for private listening RUclips making etc etc when you're using older equipment originally or far distant equipment TV and one in entertainment in the other all these products have a perfectly good combinational mode use again my setup
    Starting from final end going backwards
    00-Optical to Bluetooth
    01-HDMI ARC
    02-1x4 (splits to four different TVs same source)
    02b extremely long hdmis or HDMI to ethernet
    03-2x1 HDMI manual switcher
    04a primary media source (daily always on)
    04b full entertainment system sources (mostly always off safe power)
    05-8x1 entertainment devices including Xbox PlayStation bdp Nvidia Shield etc etc etc
    And prior to all this I had a CRT TV so it used to go from all of this so we'd have an additional downgraders
    Which were HDMI to RCA
    RCA to coaxial 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂😭😍😋🥰
    This is what happens when you work with old technology new technology and trying to get the best you can get out of it and the easiest functionality you can get out of it and it's what's called patchwork on low budgets

I have had several HDMI modchips installed in various systems and my HDMI matrix is full. Also, when I daisy chained two switches together I had some issues, though i didn't get around to testing if that was a cord issue or some complication from having a system run through 2 (identical) switches. Great video. Timing is perfect for me as well. The question I have is do the matrix functions work bidirectionally? My use case requires switching two inputs to one output. An RPi and a PC to one monitor with audio switching to desktop powered speakers. Obviously a two to 4 might work, but I have zero hand-on experience with these devices. Also, my 4-lort kvm is vga only and one of the usb inputs is not working. So I believe you may be doing another video that addresses those. Thanks for doing this. I have a difficult time deciding what to buy these days. Much appreciated. Thanks!

      Yup, those matrix switches can act as a normal switch as well, so any input can be routed to any output.

    I would be interested to know if any of the really basic 2 in 1 out HDMI switches that don't need to be powered would distort image/sound quality and lag. I asked one company named UGREEN that makes switches about this stuff and they said "there is a certain attenuation" (loss of signal strength) when the switch is in use.
    I need one because my PS3 needs to bypass HDCP for the Retrotink 4K and the switch functionality is needed because I'm out of HDMI ports on my TV.

They’ve got a 6x2 HD version that I might check out as well… couldn’t find too much commentary on it outside of Amz reviews, but that 6x2 configuration is a good one that’s hard to find.

    I have two 34 inch widescreen monitors of the same native resolution (3440x1440). I need to have two switched inputs to both monitors (a PC and a Laptop). I bought an Orei 2 in/2 out switch that allows me to switch inputs to each monitor. However, Windows will not recognise the second monitor for extending the desktop, it will only allow copying of the input to both screens. I am thinking this is due to the switch functionality in seperating the input signal to the two outputs whereas I thought the input would be shared to the two outputs. What do I need to allow the two inputs to go to the two outputs as a shred output signal. Is a splitter the right thing for me?

    • @RetroRGB

      Direct video sends a WEIRD resolution that most HDMI devices don't understand, as it's really only designed for CRT use. It'll be hit or miss as to which splitters and audio extractors work with it, as opposed to standard resolutions like 480p, 1080p, etc. So, you can try the Avedio, but it may not work.
