Three poor lads take off to find a wife. During their journey a strange old man gives them shelter. The series of complications starts when they don’t keep their promise made to the stone-hearted old man, and he transforms them into stone. In the meantime a clever and good-hearted brother is born for them, who turns events for the better.
Made by the Kecskemét Film Studio.
Directed by: Mária Horváth
Storyteller: Gyula Szabó
Music: Kaláka band
The makers used the decorative art of a certain countryside region at each episode. The trio of folk art, folk music and folk tales are masterfully combined in the episodes, which have unique imagery, sometimes spicy folk humor in the dialogues. Thanks to the natural presentation of the storytellers, and the music of the Kaláka band, the viewer can experience something unique and special.

How to survive a Hungarian folk tale: be blonde
😂😂😂😂😂
Also feed EVERYONE.
Also: have blue eyes and be poor
For having black hair and brown eyes, dang I'm doomed!
I've seen this remark on several of these videos. However, if you listen without watching the video you'll notice that the tales (almost) never describe the hair color.
Why didn't the three gentlemen pair the old man up with their mother?
She's close to him in age, is a widow (so she's available to remarry), and she isn't bad looking for her age.
All they have to do is prim up their mother, and set the two up & see what happens.
Cuz he's picky. He wanted a YOUNG maiden
That's what I thought.
If she had another son, then she's probably still married.
The old man said he wanted a young maiden. Presumably he wasn't interested in a woman his own age.
@@ThePrincessCH, I was thinking that too. Which brings up the question, WHERE THE HELL WAS THE BOYS' FATHER WHILE ALL THIS WAS GOING ON???
The old man's heart became part of the little bird.
When the old man got his heart back the little red bird turned white.
At 7:42 The bird turns red while sitting on the finger of the 12-year-old boy.
Oh dear the story begins again!
im so tearfull in joy, how nice these brother tales are, where youngest forgives, or saves, or helps the elders, even if they were unkind or if he didnt know them. i am so warm, its so beautiful.. thank you for translating these. all the posiblle love from the baltic sea
Imagine letting some dudes stay the night and in return you demand a whole person as payment.
Magical murder and magical kidnapping. God, this tale was weird.
every folk tale is weird
What scared me was that the old man showed no mercy on the gentlemen.
That`s what having a stone heart means.
@Mullerornis
How dare you insult me?!
The garland gift was so sweet 😭
Help, I can't stop watching these! 😄
Must not have been any blonde, youngest sisters in their village.
This is really similar to "The Heartless Giant" story from the Jim Henson "The Storyteller" tv show. Guess all these folktales spread all throughout Europe and had many versions to them.
The 3 headed dragons strength was hidden in a box of 6 wasps; in a rabbit; in a bear...
i remember that one xD
@Sarah Emily its a different Hungarian Folk Tale as well on his channel
I thought it was 9 wasps
Which folktale is that?
What is the name of that folktale?
Very cute, especially the ending!
Davy jones kept his heart in a chest, buried in a beach… this guy put his in a bird, the bird in a rock, and the rock on a mountain 😂. I keep thinking about the lengths the old man went through to hide his heart
Beautiful Story. 😊😊😊
The 12 year old just going away
I'm shocked that the boy who save the day doesn't get married.
he's 12? o_O he has his own fairytale in future xD
This is looks like heartwarming story if you prefer to not notice that one of girls was forced to spend MANY years living as wife for old man she didnt liked in fist place. And just imagine reaction of her "saved" fiance when he finds that instantly to him she became older and "second hand".
"Second hand" is for things, not people.
@@maifelicia1684According to hungarian tales girls IS things. They commodity or prize but not people. Saved princess instantly falls in love with savior, why? Just to soften fact she will marry him anyway.
I feel sorry for the king honestly
I think I've figured out how this single woman got so many sons, and why the sons couldn't find wives to their liking in town. Half-siblings, she slept around.
theyre all of one age and look alike = triplets....... maybe dont bring such evil thought into folktale for children. many folktales have the element of "boy must travel far out to find wife'' - villages worked like that in old day, everywhere, and even today.
If the 3 boys set off as young adults say 16, plus the few years they were away with the king. Let's go 21. Plus 12 years as a statue. That one maiden is now an old maid at 33 years old unless the old mans magic kept her young
It would’ve been more interesting if the young girl herself went out to get the heart. It felt forced to randomly add the younger brother.
Yeah, thanks for turning us to stone for years and for holding captive our sister for the same amount of time, taking away the best years of her life and torturing her with sorrow.
Sorry everyone, but the final thanks to the old man were too ridiculous X'D
😍😍😍nice story
Well, I was wondering where the blonde child of the family was
Jim Henson's Storyteller series has a variation on this, but it's a heartless giant.
Hope you make 9th season
That one maiden is way older than her sisters, husband, and brothers-in-law though. After all, the others wouldn't have aged while in stone. XD
Why was the old man a king at the end and sitting at the table...did he marry the old woman? Lol
so far in all the stories only men choose the women and women just say yes, simple as that..... no expectations nothing else.....
How to live in Hungarian Folktales: *be blonde*
It looks like this story was adapted from another story in another culture.
Why didn't the girl do it instead of a 12-year-old boy?
Can you hindi explend your story
I thought the title is about my ex
If it was Indian the guy would have left the maiden for not being virgin

Why is this so addictive?
I love how their is always a conveniently amount of available women equal to the number of heroes in the story.
I wish it was like that in real life...
You have to watch 'The thief, the huntsman, the astronomer, and the tailor'
Or the fox princess
The youngest brother didn't get a woman for saving his brothers
@@RKnightD94he was 12 though
"... But they kept these thoughts to themselves and tried to hide their laughter."
This was difficult because, like all Hungarians, their laughter sounded like an accordion having a violent muscle spasm.
as a Hungarian person, I can confirm that that is indeed what our laughs sound like
This is an unusual take on the man with a heart of stone. Usually after his heart is found, it smashed or ripped apart and the man dies and the spell is taken off the stone brides and grooms. I like that here, the old man has merely lost his heart and repents for what he has done after it is brought back to him. Also, the bit where the princess places the garland on the bed is adorable.
I know, she offered him her virginity, adorable. Good thing he didn't take it. Apparently, that's not where his heart really was :)
I never read the original, and I thought they WOULD kill the bird, and then the old man would die.
I like that too. I think if someone lost his heart he'd have no pleasure in life but revange
What kind of stories have you been reading o_o
You say "usually" but I never read a story like that
"she swept, cooked, and cried all day"
Guy, it's not a wife you wanted, it's a slave !
tsuba666 or... a real woman who cooks for her husband
@@GustavoRodriguez-qr5po Dude... a "real" woman can do whatever she wants and is not her husband's property. You are quite a prick, huh. A man who can't cook is pathetic.
I think they forgot to mention that she rode old man's dick everynight and cried coz of that everyday.
Don’t you just love it that feminists freaks can just generalize all men and that’s fine but if anyone makes a generalization about women, they’re all “I’M AN INDIVIDUAL! I’M UNIQUE!!!” You can’t have it both ways. You can’t complain about generalizations and go and make them yourself. It’s hypocritical and unfair and I thought you freaks were all about being fair. But really you just wanna complain and be hypocritical
YamiNoGame all men born after 1893 ain’t funny
all they know is post doge,be racist online, act like daddy dom bf,and say kino
In a hungarian scale, how blonde do you need to be to weel succeed in your life?
Beautiful story , I wish in the real world we can do this kind of magic.
Welll...
1. the old woman had another child..with no sign of a father... 🤔
2. Despite 12 or more years of difference the older brothers or the maidens or the old man did not age?🤔
Folktale, yes, but..🤔🤔🤔
They did not age because umm...the power of love and the goodness of their hearts.
I know right 😂
Sometimes these folktales have NO logic
*ocd*
The brothers were turned to stone so they wouldn’t age. The maiden was probably only 16 (given when it was written) so she wouldn’t be old looking after only 12 years.
The youngest brother is probably illegitimate. His mother's husband is dead at the start. She herself isn't suffering menopause, yet.
Same thoughts eh
Hungarian folk tails are so true. This actually happened to me
And me
The design on the dove who came to the little brother, reminded of Native American art❤
One day the old man was "in very high spirit"... as in "spirits"... as in alcohol... he was drunk. The old man was drunk.

"Three handsome sons"
Excuse me what
I expected the old man to marry with the mother at the end, but it didn't happen and I'm disappointed
She is obviously married. That's why she gave birth to her 4th son.
Why is there a king sitting at the table at the wedding in the end?
@@ellamone9998 It's the father of the brides.
LOL that makes sense now :) So the daughters and their father were reunited in the end as well. I like this end better.
Boy: Anyone who is hungry, come.
Ram: *You have summoned me young man, I am here.*
I’ve got to give the one petrified son credit for still keeping his bride after she’d aged 12 years while he was frozen.
He has to anyways. This sassy boy was petrified for disrepecting the poor old man.
oh my god, the bird turned red at the end. it stole that kid's heart
Man, id love a soundtrack for these videos
The old man is seriously crazy
How did the widow have a child.. a boy again without her husband? That's strange
Illegimitacy, perhaps? If the mother wasn't enduring menopause, she could've birthed the boy. Shameful, yet logical.
Maybe she adopted the child?
I wondered the same, esp since she was already supposed to be old before the sons left.
Perhaps she got pregnant before her husband died?
in baltoslavic and finnougric folktales, pregnancies just happen, even if there is no father, because the people in old times didnt quite get what made a kid x) There are many myths where women get pregnant after eating a fruit of some kind or cutting their finger off - magicians and wisewomen would give them shoes to wear down, metal rods to make into needle, and so such things, in a "make you pregnant" spell. its just a folktale, assume it was magic fruit ~
All of these stories have marriage in them! Hahahaha!
The Cursed Potion
Yep..... I like it though, none of this sex out of marriage 😶
BLESSINGS OF THE LORD ON YOU OLD MAN, BLESSINGS OF THE LORD ON YOU
How did the little bird get the man’s heart to begin with? 8-o. **pictures flock of red birds making off with men’s hearts**
Damn, I actually never thought of that before.
Near the end of the imagery of this folktale there is possibly a clue to that and if so a rather grim thing indeed for the little bird landed upon the youngest son's hand and changed from white to red
shinraset
The bird: *sees someone with a heart* I THINK IM GONNA STEAL
I kinda thought the boi would end up hitched with the third wife
Tigro idk it’s been 12 years and she’s probably in her 30s know. Unless it’s the other way around then nvm.
Why didn't the young wife get the bird?
Zanny Unoriginal She couldn't smash the rock where the bird was.
Maybe she did, if she pissed someone off and they held up their fist and...ohhhh, I see what you mean. 😜
Zanny Unoriginal
Cause most of these stories are a little sexist
Since they are old tales from times where women were
Seen as weaker then men
Other stories speak against that. I think it was so the youngest son (an expy for the child being told the story) could save the day.
Lol ur pfp matches perfectly with ur comment!
Also marina > pearl
Being blond is powerful asf
Reads the title:
Is this story about me???
2:46. You know you can just say he was drunk. The milk colored stuff in the bottle isn’t fooling anyone.
I love how he turns them into stone and they kiss him on the cheeks.
This is a different kind of story with a different kind of ending instead of killing the old man or getting revenge on him at least they offer gave him even though he had imprisoned them for a long time most of them were in stone and probably was not conscious but the third Maiden unfortunately was yet they still embraced and kissed him not only the women but the men as well I would think due to the circumstance that the old man was cursed kind of like Beauty and the Beast sort of thing but even with a Heart of Stone he never hurt the young wife again I just thought it was interesting Howard bison to that forgiving the man we're another stories somebody he did this would rightfully be punished regardless of Their Own misery and torture you don't take it out on other innocent people
the handsome sons look like Waluigi
This appears to share common roots with stories about Koschei the deathless. Which makes sense since this is Hungarian and Koschei is Slavic.
This is the first channel which always upload on my birthday which is 11 April.
I am pretty sure that little bird stole that boy's heart. You would think the old man would have killed the bird to get his heart back. And so, the cycle continues.
5:07 eat my hair and you will receive one for all midoria
6:22 DETROID SMAAAAASH
The Young lady was uraraka jaja
I feel sorry for the man whose wife had to marry the old man.
Snood I feel sorry for the wife!
@@kittyrose4778 yeah, that too. Must have taken a lot of willpower not to just run away.
Also even tho they got back together in the end, the girl aged 12 years and the guy did not since he and his brothers and the other two girls were stones, so he got a 12 year older girl back ... "Yaaaay". Not so happy ending for him I guess.
Snood yes but she was kind
Zorander Istvan yes but if he loves her it shouldn’t matter
The kid set out to be a pokemon trainer and managed to catch 2 pokemon
They should have invited the Old Man to live with them! He seems quite lonely!
🐦
Was the garland thing and the heart (supposedly) being between the sheets a metaphor for...uhm, intercourse?
If so...oh no
Maybe. Yeah, grouse.
Maybe. Maybe the old man was just testing her to see if she would try to destroy his heart if she knew where it was.
Read between the garland
Wait, the little bird landing on the boy’s finger at the end becomes red again...does that mean the bird took the little boy’s heart?
How many folk tales have a protagonist with siblings old enough to be their parents
whats weird of that to you? adoption is a thing, so is magic x3
Three sons and what no one did the crops is that why they are pore
Well a part was left out where the old man was executed for imprisoning the kings three daughters
they are poor and choosy
Almost gives me a Kingdom Hearts vibe
Did Gaunter O’Dimm turn this guys heart into stone too?
Aprendo com essas histórias que ajudar animais, fornos, plantas,árvores no meio do caminho sempre geram benefícios futuros.
When the hearth of stone dlc was announced for The Witcher 3 i was kinda expecting this a little bit
And this is where HeartSton came from the end.
So then, does the old man not want a young maiden at the end still because, since he got his heart back he doesn't need sex to fill the void anymore?
Finally the mother was included in the happy ending
4:56 Me when ever someone offers food to me! 😂😩
I was expecting the young maiden to do something, a bit dissapointing but at least it turned out well.
Why do all handsome men in Hungarian tales have moustaches
Because it was traditionally hungarian
🔥🔥🌞🔥🌞
Haha good msg ... there are real ppl with there hearts missing or turned into stone

How the young man climbed the rock 😐
Kinda reminds me of King Koshchei, what with the heart inside of a thing inside of another thing.
Actually, his death was on the tip of the needle inside of the egg inside of the duck inside of the rabbit inside of the chest on the oak in russian folktales ☠️🧷🐣🦆🐇📦🌳
@@artpopangels I heard a similar story by Brothers Grimm.
@@artpopangels Right, and it's used to slay him. I recall reading about another version where instead of a needle with his death on it being inside the egg, the egg itself is his heart or soul, and the hero slays Koshchei by breaking the egg in his hand. All very fascinating.
He's one of the sources of inspiration for the Lich, a kind undead wizard in western fantasy games and stories, who stores his soul in a gold or silver box, or a precious gem, or some other vessel designed to withstand the ages.
The old man still has no wife though so that's sad.
oh my!
I came here specifically because I saw from the title card that the three men weren't blond, so I was curious.
