As a woman in her late 30s, I feel this so hard. I really feel like I've got an expiration date, now somewhere in my past, that limits my opportunities in life in so many ways - and like, no matter what I do, my looks always have and always will define me.
Your video made me cry. I act all the time in my job. I'm a nurse. You put a wall up between yourself and too much real emotion because all of would probably kill you. But at the same time, you have to be there for your patients and your real emotion in your work is what makes you help them. To remember who you are there for and to help you learn. But at the same time...your body and your age...even though it is making you a better nurse because your intuition gets better and your knowledge base increases and actually connects with it...your body starts failing. Especially if you have children and your shifts are all over the place. You have to be kind but assertive. Jaded enough to look after yourself but still kind when you need to be....and then imagine working and relying on a bunch of people with these same problems. Not trying to be woe is me...I am very lucky and thus is the profession I chose....but your video helped.
I love this new personal commentary section at the end! I would love a whole episode of this type of commentary. But please keep adding it to the end as well!
One of my favorite movies about actresses is Stage Door (1937) with Lucille Ball, Ginger Rogers, and Katherine Hepburn. I love how it captures the competitive nature in the industry, talented ingenues getting overlooked in favor of women who aren't talented but have the connections. It's a sad film, but a very good one.
Can you do The Ingenue as a trope? I see Bridget Jones as a deconstructed Ingenue and Bombshell (face and personality of former, body and sensuality of latter). Also the Wallflower with a focus on WFs of color, the "All Grown Up and Beautiful" trope, Asian Women in media, and the slow burn of curvy bodies and representation in Hollywood
I love these suggestions! Betty Boop could also be an excellent example of an Ingenue, since she doesn't realize how attractive she is to those around her!
I don’t even like being called an actress, an actor is an actor, it’s gender neutral! It’s funny how teens and 20’s are the ideal of a female screen actress but on stage it’s 30’s. Good luck finding a stage role with a decent amount of lines if you are under 30! Or longer if you look young. 🤪 It’s so awful because at 25 I’m running out of time to start screen acting but having to play literal children on stage. Like 11-15 year olds. There’s no winning!! It feels like I’ll go straight from playing kids to playing grannies sometimes. I just want to engage in the art-form I love so much, that’s it.
I think that a big part of the fear at aging of real life actresses has a lot to do with the industry itself. It's so hard to find a good piece of media with complex well rounded senior women's. I mean, according to Hollywood women over 50 are etiher crapy hollow villains or crapy nurturing mother figures. I'd be terrified too.
Hey! I would love to see a video about the "Sensitive male artist working on one last piece of art to change the world" Trope. It's surprisingly common, especially in musicals with men writing *the song*
Honestly, I'm tired of this trope, I don't want to see actresses playing actresses having a hard time becoming actresses. And I'm an actress! I want to see them playing other people outside of their own job.

There are a lot of topics that should be discussed when talking about female rivalry in media, such as feminism, patriarchy, fame, media outlets, female friendship, Smurfette principle, male friendship, and so on...
Female feuds. Many men love these cat fights. If it were among men it would seem a bit weird. Not masculine at all. James Woods would punch De Niro (Sadly Too outspoken woke) around like he did in Once upon a time in America.

To be honest, I've been curious to try acting myself. The idea of putting on a character to reveal their innards to the world. To push forward our perception and understanding of the human experience. I don't know if I'd be any good at it. But I'm curious. Thank you for creating this content. Seeing an examination of this idea from this perspective is so interesting to me. Yet there are actresses over 50 actresses who still have thriving careers, Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Vanessa Redgrave, Sissy Spacek, Ellen Burstyn, Sigourney Weaver, yet these ladies have actual talent to maintain a long career.
That may be somewhat true but they still aren’t given the best parts compared to younger counterparts like Emma stone and Scarlett’s Johansson etc… they also rarely appear in movies as much as they use to. So there’s still a long way to go.
Marriage and family often interfere with women's creativity due to commitment, unpaid workload, and social expectations of being a "good" housewife. That a lot of actresses, writers, eco-activists, managers, and other busy women weren't included mothers is fairly true in the arts and the media. Russian sculpturist Anna Golubkina said: "The art of tied hands does not like. You have to come to him with free hands ... Art is a feat, and here you have to forget everything, give everything".
It's hard out here to be an actress. You have to love it or you won't survive it. I say that from firsthand experience. You don't last or you'll need frequent space to survive such an out of your control career. It can hurt you bad to live life as others for others through other's eyes & visions. The business & bureaucracy alone can take you out some days. But when you love it... and you can see yourself blossom in that love... man, there's nothing like it... ❤️
@TheTake Is there a video about how men crossing dressing as women is "Silly Adventures Time!" And how women crossdressing as men is "time to get a serious education and war medal"?
Haha not really though. Madhuri, Juhi, and Kajol continue to do films, but not with the same success as SRK, Hrithik Roshan etc. Their age poses a fake “sell-ability” problem
I agree. But Bollywood and Hollywood (and let’s face it - the majority of professions) has a problem with nepotism. We rarely get people who don’t have a familial foot in the door make it big in the industry. Somebody could have the training/experience and never make it in simply because they’re not related to a celeb whether distantly or directly.
@@ojuskhanolkar7146 Honestly people still go to watch a movie because it has Madhuri, Juhi or Kajol in it. In Hollywood though only Meryl Streep sells her movies because she is in it. Come to think of it even Shabana Azmi can still sell movies in India. And may I point out, Meryl Streep is by no standards your typical actress. We will never see a Meryl Streep again not because she is a very good actress, there very good actresses in every generation, but because Meryl Streep has been nominated for / more Oscars than any other actress OR male actor alive or dead!! She the most Oscar nominated / won person ever in the history of the world. It is extremely unlikely that any one would be able to come anywhere near her accomplishments. I'm grateful as an actor (sometimes) that I've never been the engenue type. I usually tend to get engenue-supportive roles (best friend to the best friend or someone with their own arc altogether), or villain/antihero roles in a few cases. For my money they're much more interesting, and I'm so glad that my job isn't to just serve as some male fantasy. If I have a greater future in acting, being a character actor is probably it, and that suits me fine. That being said, I do feel bad for actresses who are judged primarily on their looks in the opposite sense, and are told that's all that they can be and are limited by the system as a result. They don't deserve to be judged only by their looks, just as much as I don't.

Can you do the mama bear trope? i think is interesting because how it is something that can be describe as femenine and masculine at the same time
Yes, please! I think that they should also cover the Papa Wolf trope, which is the Male equivalent, and extremely protective towards their cubs!
@Michael Kim the woman literally killed Bellatrix because she wanted to kill her daughter and said "not my daughter you bitch!" I think she does.
“Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my close up.”

I saw "The actress" and Emma Stone and i inmediately thought of that SNL skit where Emma plays an actress that gets too much into her role: the wife whose husband cheats on ,in a gay porn
That skit was awesome, the wife was an interesting, relatable character and you understand why Emma is an Oscar winner XD
That was hilarious especially when paired with Becks deadpan and calmness.
I love the conversation between Sussannah and Debra by the end of the video. A great way to see the compromise that The Take have with the topic they touch in every video
would love to see a trope video on the "tortured artist", especially "the writer"!
It’s disturbing to see in Mainstream Hindi Cinema how the Hindi Film Actress has been ‘othered’ by assuming she’s dumb and that’s what a lot of people think of them. But if you learn about them, they’re interesting, intelligent and fun people.
Bollywood is a shithole and most actresses sell their bodies. What do u expect?
@@TheFourthWinchester You’re half right. It’s not always smooth sailing but you shouldn’t be reductive and say “sell their bodies”. Not at this point in time.
@@TheFourthWinchester Mainstream Bollywood isn't that great but the more niche movies are way better. 🤷🏽♀️
Also when was the last time we saw big superstars paired up with women of their age ? 50 years old male actors paired with 20 years old young actresses(mostly debutants) in mainstream movies, it needs to change.
Thank god OTT exists but it's also being censored because of so called 'Sanskars' or to preserve 'indian culture'
@@Despair254 I agree with that but we need to back artists and not mercenaries. It’s high time that the industry realises this.
As a woman in her late 30s, I feel this so hard. I really feel like I've got an expiration date, now somewhere in my past, that limits my opportunities in life in so many ways - and like, no matter what I do, my looks always have and always will define me.
‘Sunset Boulevard’ was just genius.
"That woman...is a woman!!" ☠️😅
WHAT!? NO!!!
And...
Lol
Yes! Would love this too
@@trinaq "You don't know you're beautiful, oh oh, that's why you're beautiful" describes the Ingenue to a T
You really are obsessed with Bridget Jones, aren't you?
Just want to continue voicing my support for the post-video discussion. I'm really loving this new addition and hope it continues!
Posted 20 seconds ago. Never been this early, I think. Cannot wait to see what your guys take is on this trope
read it now!
Hey! I would love to see a video about the "Sensitive male artist working on one last piece of art to change the world" Trope. It's surprisingly common, especially in musicals with men writing *the song*
Can you do an analysis of toxic friendships in trainspotting?
Honestly, I'm tired of this trope, I don't want to see actresses playing actresses having a hard time becoming actresses. And I'm an actress!
I want to see them playing other people outside of their own job.
Please do a video analyzing various film tests and their pros & cons (like the Bechdel Test, the DuVernay Test, and the Mako Mori Test)
I love the reviews you girls are doing at the end of every video 💗
I'm an actress and this video really hit home for me
Every day that I see there's a new video from you guys is like Christmas- carry on being awesome!
The irony of the whole "actresses are insane" mentality meanwhile Tom Cruise is still being invested in by Hollywood.......
For the general World Wide audience He is Tom Cruise and most are not aware of controversies/criticism he receives. They simple want action and escapism. Adam Driver, Tom Cruise, Keanu Reeves are seen as non political. They don't open their mouth blabbering non sense like many other actors. Look at Tom Hanks expressions during Ricky Gervais Golden Globes ceremony.
@@lucioagelvis2134 P.S. Literally everything Tom Cruise says is him blabbering nonsense. What sane person shames a mother (Brook Shields) for having postpartum depression?
@@giancarlojacobs9982 I agree, but he hasn't added anything for 15 years. Worldwide audiences are unaware of the Brooke Shields incident. Producers as you all know mostly see profits. Marketability. People like the Chinese are in your face non PC.

I loved ‘Notting Hill’ as a Meta Film on Actresses. Julia Roberts is awesome!
We need a video about female feuds in media, with Joan Fontaine VS Olivia de Havilland, Joan Crawford VS Bette Davis, Kathy Perry VS Taylor Swift, Kim Cattrall VS Sarah Jessica Parker, Shannen Doherty VS Alysa Milano, Mariah Carey VS Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears VS Christina Aguilera, and Victoria Justice VS Ariana Grande.
I'm disappointed you didn't have the names of the movies that you were showing scenes of this time. There's a lot of them in there I would love to watch. What's the one with Jessica Lange called?
Feud. It is a TV show
@@ihavenomouthandimustnya thank you!
Is it fair to say that Norma Jean Baker created Marilyn Monroe the "sexpot" (7:04) in the same manner that Marion Michael Morrison created John Wayne the "über-male" or Archie Leach created Cary Grant the "coolest guy in the room"?
My favourites are Betty and Rita from Mulholland Drive, the dark side of showbiz and all the suspense about that film gets me goosebumps
Please consider Teacher Trope next. It seems like you can only either be a saint or a devil.
How film and mass media engage with our culture's depiction and understanding of femininity is such an in-depth and nuanced a thing, isn't it???
Konkona Sen Sharma in ‘Luck By Chance’ is a great example of the deconstruction of ‘The Ingenue’/Blank Slate Category.
Can you guys analyse the" best friend of the protagonist, who's always at their house, mostly for food" trope. We also see a comedic effect in him/her being repeatedly kicked out. Examples include Hakeem from Moesha and Will's friend in the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
I find it interesting why the shows rarely, if at all delve into the reason why, if that makes sense
Please do the an analysis of the Bechdel test :O
I would love you to explore the writer trope! Or maybe just people with an English related career and how they are written for film and tv.
I was super excited when I saw Sarah Goldberg as she was the best performance general of 2019 and then I became severely depressed knowing we still don’t have Barry Season 3
Atleast we'll have like atleast up to 4 seasons! The scripts been written apparently 🤤
I loved the conversation at the end! Although I think the scripted part is, of course, well-researched and very informative; I enjoy a little conversation that looks more organic 😁
I quite like the 2 min reflexions at the end, good idea. Keep up the good work, you're the best!
I love this channel. I recommend it to my film teacher.
The movie perfect blue by Satoshi Kon explores this trope really well
Yet there are actresses over 50 actresses who still have thriving careers, Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Vanessa Redgrave, Sissy Spacek, Ellen Burstyn, Sigourney Weaver, yet these ladies have actual talent to maintain a long career.
That may be somewhat true but they still aren’t given the best parts compared to younger counterparts like Emma stone and Scarlett’s Johansson etc… they also rarely appear in movies as much as they use to. So there’s still a long way to go.
Hi Takedom 👋 we are here for another troupe, I love these things!
It would be interesting to see the "Method Actor Who Goes Too Far" Trope
Isn't that something that happens more in real life than in fiction?
@@XanderVJ I mean, just look at some messed up stuff Jared Leto has done, for example..
@@peaceflowerstudios6833 Again, that's real life, not fiction.
I’d love to see a video essay on Grey’s Anatomy! Like “A Masterclass in being Human”

Since y’all are doing character-career tropes as well, can we get a Tortured Artist or The Writer trope?
@TheTake Is there a video about how men crossing dressing as women is "Silly Adventures Time!" And how women crossdressing as men is "time to get a serious education and war medal"?
And yet both get hijacked by romance too!
This channel is so good!
18:40 Punintended or not, I really appreciated that
I’m happy that Mainstream Hindi Cinema has some brave women who do some amazing work well into their 40s and 50s.
So let's not use Meryl Streep as an example of how Hollywood is fairer to its leading ladies.
Is this a joke? Bollywood is a cesspool.
@@TheFourthWinchester It is but change is slow. Seeing some semblance of a change is better than no change at all. I know where you’re coming from. I do accept your point.

Please do a Slavic trope in movies, unfortunately they are always shown as Russian speaking mafia crooks, killers, war deserters and in that vein. They keep mixing people from different Slavic countries and the stereotype of the countries and what they look like is really devastating.
This is BRILLIANT. Thank you.
I can't believe I'm one of the first people to watch and enjoy this video.❤️✨
