When he breaks down and says, "I want to go home." If you've had to leave your home, or lost the person that made it a home, Sam Rockwell's delivery of that line is like a lightning rod to the soul.
I miss when they used to make great small sci fi movies like this. I swear you used to get half a dozen surprise films like this a year that you just stumbled upon and they blew you away. I can't remember the last time I had that experience.
@@iamwhoyousayiam6773 For real. Out of curiosity I went through all the movies that came out in the last few years and compared it to just the year 1999. And it was like a handful of ok to good movies from the last few years to literally a couple dozen great movies in 99, and another couple doesn't good/fun movies. You can basically do this for every year up to maybe 2012. Its crazy how far the film industry has fallen.
You can never fail with Rockwell. At least, Rockwell can never fail regardless of whether the movie does or not. Thank you very much Dave, will note this one down.
Caught this movie about 11 years ago now. Watched it a few times and I only do that when a movie is good. Duncan Jones, David Bowie's son, directed this movie too.
Saw it when it first came out and it has haunted me ever since. I'm so glad they doubled the money they put into it because it was worth every penny, and then some. The acting, writing, direction, scenery, effects, and music are something you don't get from Holloweird, even with their humongous budgets. And no degeneracy. That's a BIG plus. But the story line was so well written. I was happy the corporation finally got busted out, but at what cost? Jeeze...
The Netflix movie Mute takes place in the same universe as Moon, sorta a sequel. In one scene, they show the trial of the company and Sam Rockwell plays the original host as well as the escaped clone. Look it up, its a pretty good movie
Moon is a gem of cinema that needs to be watched and it was made from a 5 millions budget and just shows that with people who loves making stories along with a skill to adapt can make wonders and that is what Moon is.
This is the perfect example of the axiom: a story must explain itself. By the end, all the question threads are tied up, but the implications are left to the viewer. I adore this movie!
I loved this film. One of the coolest parts of it was when Sam was trying to get into a restricted area and GERTY came up behind him, you think the computers going to stop him, but it reached out a robotic arm and punched in the access code for him, then when volunteering to be memory reset it explained its always been there to help him. The company apparently made GERTY a bit too helpful and it helps Sam bring them down. It was a nice twist on the usual "Evil computer" trope. Its also adorable how it communicates with emojis.
In the movie Mute, also by Jones, has an Easter egg for Moon as one of the tvs in the background of a scene has the new reporting the court case. 27 Sam Bells can be seen at the hearing and the caption on the news reads "the 156 face their maker - Lunar Industries ex-employee questioned by panel in the presence of scores of clones." Apparently all the clones were brought to Earth, but it also seems to imply that the original Sam Bell might have known he was being cloned.
Ive never fully watched it, only bits ive seen are the cameo bits from comedian Matt Berry who plays the character Overmeyers who is one of Sam's superiors I found out that Duncan Jones re-used several set pieces from the abandoned Red Dwarf film to save on production costs, These include the sleeping quarters and the corridor of the secret room
The use the piece(memories of someone we'll never know)is heartbreaking in the scene where GERTY tells him the truth..! One of my favorite Sci-Fi movies.. great video Dave
also, Moon released with a short, a mini-movie, I think it was called "Whistle" about a supergun that can accurately shoot a bullet from the Swiss Alps Targeting anybody on Earth. also worth a review/watch.
Yeah, I remember seeing this back when Rockwell just started being a name. I always love finding these little story gems that most people passed on by. This was very entertaining.
The best part about movies like this is knowing nothing about it prior to watching it. I was like hmm, what this? Didnt move the entire movie. Loved it
Love this movie. It played in my area for literally a week, but I managed to catch it on the big screen before it was gone. I was alone in the theater with maybe one or two other people. Such a shame...such a wonderful, overlooked film.
I know that Human Cloning has so many possibilities for storylines. Maybe some science fiction writer will come out with a good reason and/or good cloning storyline. Most will be negative and horrifying. But they will still be entertaining if done correctly. They can be stories that will inspire and teach us moral lessons.
This movie could very easily be set in the bladerunner universe. Early model replicant, "We began to recognize in them a strange obsession. After all, they are emotionally inexperienced, with only a few years in which to store up the experiences which you and I take for granted."
soundtrack is aamzing. PWEI veteran's finest work. great miniatures & an equalled performance from Rockwell. and what a story.. the reveal is heartbreaking. one of the best scifi films in the last 50 years.
Moon is such a damn good movie - and absolutely underrated. I know people use that term inappropriately more often than not - but it really is a superb film, and Rockwell is nothing short of amazing. Glad to see more people being exposed to this gem.
The underlying premise of this movie, and the reveal that Sam's character is not the person he thinks he is and what that means to him and his sense of self is truly one of the most heartbreaking moments I have ever seen in a movie. The pain he must have felt has haunted me for years.
One of my all-time favorite sci-fi movies. It is one I always bring up when sci fi movies pop up and will emphatically recommend when someone has not heard of it.
I saw a few clips of this movie on RUclips and thought it looked interesting. I bought the DVD since it wasn't being streamed at the time and I have never regretted it. The story was incredible and well done from start to finish. When discussing sci-fi with others, I have brought this movie up many times, and won't stop recommending it even though I have a very low opinion of Kevin Spacey. Well done video, thanks!
I actually caught this movie not very long ago. On Tubi, I believe. It's not the sort of movie that normally appeals to me, but I enjoyed this one. Very well done.
Couldn’t agree more. Love this film. I always had the impression that the original Sam Bell knew all about it, and was compensated. But I guess that wouldn’t align with his character. Will have to rewatch soon, because I seem to remember the movie eluding to this.
Thanks for bringing this movie to people's attention. It's my favorite movie ever. However, whenever I try to talk to anyone about it, I just get blank stares.
One of my all time favorites... this is how you do subtext correctly. What is selling your soul worth to you? Perfectly executed sci-fi done on a reasonable budget. Talent travels through the genes when your dad is David F*^kin' Bowie.🤘
Wonderful review. I own this on DVD but hadn’t caught the part where the original Sam was back on earth, makes the whole film that much more tragic. Agree about the soundtrack- “Welcome To Lunar Industries,” is on my instrumental music playlist.
Thanks for getting to this! Moon is a fantastic sci-fi flick and showcases how underappreciated Sam Rockwell is. Do "Mute" next, it's set in the same universe.
Throughout the film I had the dread that the robot was going to go wacko. But by the time you figure out whats going on I felt sorry for the clone because even though the one escaped he was going to have a short lifespan. I was certain the effect shots were all CGI but was amazed to learn they were practical miniature effects. There's a lot to like about the film.
And here is where I agree with you again. This movie unnerved me quite a bit because this is something that I actually worry about for the future. If we ever develop the technology to fully scan and copy a human mind onto a new body then we will likely have a very dystopian future.
Thank you for this review. I have been evangelizing for Moon for years. Rockwell is great in just about everything, but I agree this may be the best performance of his career. Especially considering he had no other actors to play off of.
I love this film I have since the first time I watched it. It's a genre-defining 1 and done film like Falling Down, Event Horizon, or The Usual Suspects. It tells its story, tells it well.
Concur. I stumbled on this movie on a streamer as I had never heard of it. First time I watched, I wasn’t a fan. But watched it again after a few months and can see it’s a great movie. I also recommend it.
Sam Rockwell carries this film on his shoulders. More than Tom Hanks in Castaway or Matt Damon in The Martian. Never cloying or overly sentimental. Tragic, in the way Blade Runner is tragic. An artificial man with more humanity than the immoral men who made him.
So happy you reviewed this one, I've definitely watched it more than once its very captivating but I still got very cofnused at points and couldnt keep track of the timeline and which sam I was watching in which moment , this cleared things up a bit XD
This was a fantastic movie, and really needed more marketing. Side note: I think, with a little bit of working, you could probably turn this into a stage play. It's almost entirely set in one small area.
Couldn't agree more with this review. This movie is made with the heart, not money.. The scene where Sam sits in the rover, and sobs while saying he just want's to go home is an incredible strong and sad scene. The movie is just amazing..
There’s a neat micro-sequel embedded in another Duncan Jones movie called Mute. It’s revealed to be in the same continuity as Moon because there are news broadcasts featuring the Sam Bell clones happening during the movie.
Spot on review. I hadn't seen many Rockwell movies till then, but its an amazing job he, the writer and director (David Bowie's son) did. Its clearly low budget simply by dint of the almost-solo cast, but unlike the current crop of movies where its ONLY the spectacle that matters, here its plot plot plot. And yes, the music is outstanding by Mansel.
Another example of just how talented Sam Rockwell is.
For sure. I think the director (or producer?) said it was developed with him in mind from the very beginning,
Does he make you hard
God, I love this movie. All of it. A true hidden diamond, great choice Mr.Cullen.
Cullen
I’m not into sci-fi really but I think it’s a good film.
It is a very underrated movie
I wholeheartedly concur.
Agreed this is awesome. It rarely reruns on TV but when it does it's such a treat !
This movie has a coherent reason for all the madness. JJ Abrams could learn from this.😊
I don't think J.J. Abrams is capable of learning from anything.
JJ: Nah, more mystery boxes!!!
When he breaks down and says, "I want to go home."
If you've had to leave your home, or lost the person that made it a home, Sam Rockwell's delivery of that line is like a lightning rod to the soul.
That scene gets me every time. So heartbreaking.
Or lost the safety of where you grew up.
I miss when they used to make great small sci fi movies like this. I swear you used to get half a dozen surprise films like this a year that you just stumbled upon and they blew you away. I can't remember the last time I had that experience.
Once or twice a decade now. Most of what's released is a looping commercial.
#$@& I miss the 90s and early 00s. We had more good films than we knew what to do with.

ARQ - just watched it tonight and its very good.
@@roberthak3695 that's actually one of the few random ones that popped in my head when I commented. And even that is like 8 years old.
I absolutely loved that film. I have watched it many times... it is a very intense movie

True. Just see him in "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford".
Caught this movie about 11 years ago now. Watched it a few times and I only do that when a movie is good. Duncan Jones, David Bowie's son, directed this movie too.
He directed Warcraft too.
Definitely worth watching if you haven't seen it. Sam Rockwell does an excellent job. The cloning reveal added a whole new level of creepiness.

The film's use of the song "I Am the One and Only" is a masterstroke of dark humor.
Duncan Jones is David Bowie's son btw. Great director!
Everyone knows that dont they??
I'll get my coat.
I remember i was so impressed by Sam Rockwell´s performance when i first watched it. Its a very underrated Movie.
This is the perfect example of the axiom: a story must explain itself. By the end, all the question threads are tied up, but the implications are left to the viewer. I adore this movie!
The score is haunting, story believable and fantastic acting. A great slow burn sci fi movie!

Love this film, watched it so many times. Favourite part - When "Sam" is flying back towards earth at the end and is yelling with delight.
I love listening to the soundtrack while I'm working in the office. Makes me feel like I'm on a space station
also, Moon released with a short, a mini-movie, I think it was called "Whistle" about a supergun that can accurately shoot a bullet from the Swiss Alps Targeting anybody on Earth. also worth a review/watch.
Glad you have brought this great film to other people's attention mate .
It's a very good SciFi movie. It's intense and creepy. Thank you for covering Moon. :)
Watched Moon back-to-back-to-back with Another Earth and Ink. Indy sci-fi films like these are beautiful and so inspiring.
It was pretty popular on early 2010s social media but then it just became forgotten and rarely talked about.
Thank you! Since your Oblivion video I was hoping you'd cover this too.

This movie was aired on terrestrial televsion on the day that Neil Armstrong died. It ran on the bbc i think, following a documentary about his life.

Much like Cube it's an underrated entry into it's genre that so surely deserves more attention pointed towards it.
@DaveCullen: An excellent synopsis of this gem!!
Kudos, my good man.
Try to do Cloud Atlas.
Wish we had a sequel.
Duncan Jones said one of his inspirations was SILENT RUNNING, Bruce Dern alone in space with his 3 robots.
I love Moon. It’s a prodigious effort of a masterclass in film-making and it’s use of Rockwell’s ability to play off environment is wonderful.

Moonfall had a huge budget but an incoherent vision. It was a rehash of previous disaster movies. This has a very unique flavor.

You nailed the review of this gem!
It was a pleasant surprise when GERTY said that he would help the second Sam escape. That certainly goes against what HAL would've done in "2001".
Yes! You did it! I love this movie, that's why I suggested it. Such a soul touching story, and mind exercising.
Side note: In a future Duncan Jones feature Mute, there's a shot of Sam Bell on tv... in a courtroom.
He had his own little shared universe. 😄
I have yet to see this film. I knew nothing about it. Thank you for the suggestion.
In my top 10. Crazy that this film is not more widely known.
Never heard of this movie. Thanks for the heads up about it!
