More rappers need to understand Tyler, the Creator’s style. He may be doing something unconventional, but that’s what makes him one of the greatest rappers/producers to ever hold a mic. Tyler is not only rapping about something meaningful, but abstract. Take Igor, for example. No one has ever done anything like that before. When it came out, people thought it was “strange”. What people failed to see, was that Tyler was trying to stray away from the traditional rap scene where dudes talk about chains and cars. He did something meaningful. He deserved the Grammy that he got.

I don’t think album sales are spiraling, I don’t even think the audience is as tone deaf as media or artist think we are. Drake, Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj, Taylor swift, drake, future, playboi carti, lil uzi, Billie eilish, Sza, Kodak black, summer walker, none of them have a hard time selling tickets or albums. The common denominator?? They give good shows they’re consistent and most importantly they’ve all put out timeless music. The fans aren’t dumb we listen to the “meme” music because it’s what being thrust upon us, but it doesn’t make it past social media fans have options and we spend our money on quality. You release quality work you get paid for it that’s been the case and it always will be.
Tyler is right, comparing hip hop a few years ago to now is a huge difference, rap has gotten so much less passionate over the span of like 5 years,it used to be dozens of amazing (now classic) albums being dropped in the same year, we don’t have that anymore.

Tyler is right. I'm surprised he doesn't seem to mention TikTok anywhere in the quote, because that is what these "artists" are going for. Ever since TikTok became the new way to try to break new music, everything is brain rot.
Wild because there was a period of time where Tyler’s old work was seen as gimmicky trendy and for shock value only, and when you look back at it yeah it for sure was but the difference is that Tyler grew up and became an actual artist which is what none of these modern rappers will ever be able to accomplish

I wholeheartedly agree with Tyler in his stance , and I really hope and pray that he continues to stand FIRM in his boundaries, beliefs , and morals regardless of the naysayers , and doesn’t sell out to fit the mold or AGENDA of what the industry wants, which is a quick buck obviously. The reason why I love listening to metal so much is because of the amount of freedom and creativity everyone has. It’s really sad to see how a lot of up and coming rappers are just products or memes.
People are calling him "bitter and out of touch"? Doesnt that sound like what Eminem said people will do the SECOND you say something people dont agree with? He tried to tell everybody and now Tyler is doing the same thing and apparently is being treated the same. Sad fuckin climate we living in.
It makes sense coming from Tyler because Tyler has always been one of the most creative, original, and unique artist and never one to really follow trends in the first place. Rather hes so off base and out there that its what makes him stand out, yet at the same time hes very serious about his music and creativity for better or worse, whether you like the sound or not. Hell. The start of Tylers whole career was unique, almost melancholy type of music that was distinctly different, even before going from horrorcore to what he makes now. And even when he getting started and tried doing TV shows like Loiter Squad, it was always still about bolstering his music as well as showing off other members of the group. As off kilter and goofy as Tyler is, the dudes always been incredibly smart when it comes to the moves he makes, and thats one of the reason why hes had the longevity that he has. Going further than even that, despite how insane and weird Tyler seems to be in public, hes one of the most level headed behind the scenes and in interviews especially when you compare him to other artists in the industry.
The thing is he has always had this stance. If you check earlier interviews he says this as well. He just double downed and now the shoe fits more people
whether u agree w him or not, he’s right. u can tell a lot of artists don’t actually care about the music, the history or the culture, which translates into the music itself and we end up getting a product instead of works of art
I gave up on mainstream hip hop a while ago. My problem is with the underground. Since the SC era, artists from the underground were doing things that had never been done, pushing the genre forward. Might not sound like a big deal now, but Yachty sampling Rugrats was insane back in 2015. And no one has been able to carry the torch since Peep, X and Juice - Kid Laroi was the “emo” rapper and he went pop (no surprise, his dad is a corporate executive in the music industry). There was so much stuff going on before the pandemic. The underground is in a weird spot. We have artists like Carti, Ken Carson, Lone and Yeat pushing rage while artists like Lucki and Kankan are pushing cloud rap forward. But the underground as a whole is just copy and pasting their blueprints. I’m tired of hearing all these rappers on a Ken Carson type beat. Ian and Osamason are so lame for cloning Yeat and Ken respectively. Idk, that’s my issue at least. With streaming and songs going viral on social media, I think mainstream hip hop is never coming back from being commercial. Too many artists just don’t care about their music being culturally significant anymore or creating music that represents their unique perspective on life. The audience doesn’t care anymore either. “Give me short and digestible content on every relevant topic” you can’t make art if people just want to hear a song that they can clip for TikTok before scrolling up to see whatever else is on their algorithms. Unfortunately, that’s just where the money is now. People aren’t buying albums or going to shows like they used to.
Somebody has to speak up. Ice Spice's music is just immature. She can have fans, but for ger to be considered one of the top female rappers of this era is ridiculous.
Theirs still good music and drugs proves that you don’t understand if you ain’t took acid or magic mushrooms and tripped balls and listened to any rapper never mind all the shit I’ve listened to or watched on drugs
He's not wrong, most these new rappers from 2022 to now are sickening, tik tok been making it even worse, the SoundCloud era was peak everybody was just tryna have fun and still release quality and lively music, now it's just bland, only rappers like gunna, future, Roddy ricch and some other rappers still dropping heat.
I used to only listen to rappers like travis scott, 21 savage, and kanye west but then my friend introduced me to tylers music and it truly changed my life because hes a prime example of how you dont have to fit in society to be successful
I dropped my mixtape/ album last week. I can tell you right now, I am truly just being myself. Yes I may be inspired by Travis Scott and Kanye West. But I can assure you I am telling you a story, full of journey, self-discovery and resilience, reflecting on personal challenges and the pursuit of authenticity. I just want ya'll to hear me out.
This is really rich coming from Tyler the Creator who became famous simply from shock value and juvenile delinquent antics .. When Tyler blew up he was accused of the same sh*t he is accusing young rappers of doing; profiting off people's outrage and sayin' nothing coherent or valuable with his records It's like everybody has forgotten who this guy was and why he blew up.. He may have some good music now but if he just criticizes young rappers without acknowledging that he was almost exactly the same way initially and only earned some respect as he matured... Then I can't take any "advice" he gives seriously because it shows a complete lack of self awareness I like a lot of Tyler's songs but I have never considered him a rapper of any significant skill apart from just being Avant Garde I was more into Earl and Frank ocean those guys had talent
Cant believe how much scrolling until somebody called him out. Not a fan anymore but It was fun to see how he emancipated himself from the YMCMB era, starting his own wave. But in hindsight, he was prob more of a clout chaser than the people he’s ridiculing. He’s part of the problem. What’s most interesting about Tyler is how he managed to shed his skin to become less horrorcore and more experimental pop. It obviously wasn’t sustainable to keep rapping about SA and terrorizing society, but his entire lore as an artist just says “Look at me. I’m deeply closeted but I’m going to mask it with making music about brutally abusing women and hate speech against gays. And for my next trick, I’m poking my foot outside the closet.” It’s partly bogus of him to masquerade as a man of the people now instead of just being himself from the very start and probably never becoming successful… but whatever, that’s the game.
I see where you're coming from, but when I listen to bastard, I can still see somewhat a creative vision; it's not like he was only cloutchasing and doing whatever gets attention. If you analyze the songs on the album, you'll realize that there's much more meaning put behind it than one might think. I also think his point is, that newer rappers don't even like music, but just the money. And when you look at how much Tyler knows about music, it should become obvious that while he was cloutchasing, he also had a deep love for music and wasn't mocking the genre.
@@Alejandro-yy5kn He might care about music but does he mostly mocks people and rejects accountability. He never addresses the real reasons for the hyper aggressive towards women and gays. He owes no one an explanation… but shit man up open a dialogue. Just saying “I want black kids to be who they are” ain’t good enough. The example he sets as a black artist is trash. It’s hard to really believe he’s being honest ever. Or maybe he’s still stuck on revenge and his African father. He’s more than a generational talent… but as much as he says he dgaf, he knows he has to air it out for the sake of his artistic legacy. Coming out of the closet doesn’t make you a better person, facing your problems does.

I totally agree agree with every point in this video, but the main reason i think it has become this way is that modern rappers and their fans have no respect for music and other genres. I listen to everything, indie rock to afrobeat, and i feel like the pure musicianship. When was the last time you saw ice spice collaborate with an guitarist, when was the last time you saw polo g sample a rock song. To be a guitarist or a drummer in this modern age is almost impossible when almost every beat nowadays is a trap beat. Think about this, when was the last time you saw a band in the top 100. other than arctic monkey who i absolotley love - a band that also came up from hip hop. Where is the mutual cross genre respect that musicians had for eachother. Where is the pop and rap collabs that would actually be interesting.
There are a lot of rappers bucking trends and being unique. The problem is, there isn't an existing audience for a new artist to immediately pop off. It takes slow and consistent building for that. Way easier to try and copy another rapper and get a huge chunk of existing fan base to come pay attention to you at the same time.
Whoever is saying he's saying that for attention is a grifter. He's genuinely one of the most talented musicians that exists on the landscape today and if anyone's opinion on rap music is valid it's his.
A lot of rappers today aren't doing music for the love it...there doing it for money and fame and been like this for at least the last 8-9 years getting worse as the years continued. Social Media and Streaming has allowed mediocrity to shine and the actual talent to take a backseat. What these people make today is disposable music. It's funny how the quality of music was better when we were told who to like vs now choosing who we like😂. Mind you mostly all genres today are filled with mediocrity...it's just hip hop has the most
You can go back even further when Nas said Hip Hop is dead. Artist tried to come for him. New artist are struggling but older artist are thriving. Rap isn't dead. The new artist aren't pushing the culture forward but the older artist are keeping it afloat

He’s not “shitting” on Ian necessarily. Tyler is just saying that people often turn heads for an artist that doesn’t make music for the love of it (but rather make it the profit) but not for artists that puts their life into their craft. Most rappers bite who or whatever they see is trending in order to make some quick bucks, and that’s where the problem is.

Tyler is soooooo real for this he's about everything
Stand for something or fall for anything. 💯
Music today is more about how to promote yourself than how to make actual good music and creating an own sound
Somebody has to speak up. Ice Spice's music is just immature. She can have fans, but for ger to be considered one of the top female rappers of this era is ridiculous.

This is really rich coming from Tyler the Creator who became famous simply from shock value and juvenile delinquent antics ..
When Tyler blew up he was accused of the same sh*t he is accusing young rappers of doing; profiting off people's outrage and sayin' nothing coherent or valuable with his records
It's like everybody has forgotten who this guy was and why he blew up..
He may have some good music now but if he just criticizes young rappers without acknowledging that he was almost exactly the same way initially and only earned some respect as he matured... Then I can't take any "advice" he gives seriously because it shows a complete lack of self awareness
I like a lot of Tyler's songs but I have never considered him a rapper of any significant skill apart from just being Avant Garde
I was more into Earl and Frank ocean those guys had talent
And for my next trick, I’m poking my foot outside the closet.”
It’s partly bogus of him to masquerade as a man of the people now instead of just being himself from the very start and probably never becoming successful… but whatever, that’s the game.

Tyler, the Creator, was always a better entertainer than a rapper, imo.
The only trend needed in hip hop is spitting fire that makes sense and can understand what they are saying….
