I still think one of the most beautiful scenes in I Love Lucy is when Desi is singing "We're having a Baby, my Baby and Me" to Lucy when she was pregnant with Desi Jr. The look on Lucy's face makes me cry every time. I know that after they divorced they kept in touch frequently and Desi came over when they had Grandchildren. Desi's last call b4 he died was to Lucy, so despite the divorce, and the alcohol and the fooling around, he never forgot "his favorite REDHEAD"

He was very smart and talented but no genius, for example he brought RKO for $6 mln while he could've brought it for only 1 or 2 mln (there's a doc on YT about RKO were they explain this. RKO was bankrupt). Most of the staff and crew working at Desilu were people who Lucy had known along her career in film. Like the amazing Karl Freund. When Lucy brought out Desi in '62, Desilu was in high depths. Lucy was a performer and hated being businesswoman, so Desi being a good businessman did indeed most of the work when they were together. But after '62 she was on her own and made Desilu successful again (with the help of her amazing staff working at the studio, like Herb Solow) and sold Desilu for $17 mln (today's money: $137.30). So yeah, I think Desi gets a little bit TOO much credit for his work these days. Besides Desi has always been very jealous of his wife's success (even in the 40s).

My family was glued to the TV when "I Love Lucy" first ran, as was a huge percentage of the country. I didn't know just how popular it was until decades later, when a strange fact came to light. In those days, TV shows had a lot fewer commercials, plus there weren't a great many TV channels to choose from, so viewers had fewer opportunities to get away from their TV sets. In large cities like New York, Chicago, Detroit, and so many others, city _water departments_ had to deal with a great many toilets flushing at the same time... Talk about "Star Power!"

I was so happy when they released seasons 1 and 2 as an Ultimate Blu-Ray release with the shows intact as originally aired, with the original openings and closings and the original commercials and transitions. Quite interesting too see, but probably politically incorrect by today’s standards. Since the original sponsor was Phillip Morris, a cigarette manufacturer, all the commercials in the first two seasons are pushing cigarettes.
In later seasons, they were sponsored by other companies.
It interesting to see how in the early days of television, the sponsor and their products were tightly integrated into the shows.

The show was groundbreaking, with the 3-camera filming becoming standard from that time on. My two fav shows from the 50's are "I Love Lucy" and "The Honeymooners", because they were both nonconformist. Instead of the usual small town or suburb, somewhere in the Midwest, they were set In New York City, with all its diversity. Ricky's being Cuban was a refreshing change. Also, none of them were typical couples: instead of white collar workers, Ricky was in show business, Fred was a landlord, Ralph drove a bus and Norton worked in the sewer. Only Lucy and Ricky had a child and the rest didn't seem to mind not being parents. Also, Lucy wanted a show business career and Alice worked when Ralph lost his job for a while. Very different from other shows, and I think part of the reason they have so many fans to this day.

There is nothing, whatsoever, wrong with wanting to be a housewife, even if it sounds like a “dated” concept; especially by modern standards. It’s nice and rosey to think of her as that “trailblazer for the modern working class woman”, but it wasn’t what she wanted, and the fact that she looked back over her life’s work without pride, is in itself, tragic. Makes me sad to think that she spent her entire life looking for that type of love and acceptance and didn’t find it in her marriage with Desi (even though she always said he was a friend to her).

I always find the Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz relationship such a tragedy. Constant drinking and philandering are a big deal and can cause a lot of damage and is inexcusable, and Lucille Ball definitely was right to end a relationship like that because if nothing else it can be emotionally abusive. But in the early seasons you can also tell that Desi absolutely adores her in the little looks he gives her, especially when she is not looking. I doubt that was just acting because sadly those looks go away in the later seasons just before they divorce. I truly believe Desi felt like both his drinking and his cheating a) not as big of a deal as Lucy was making it, and b) were two behaviors that he couldn't control. I don't think it completely excuses it, but I also kind of understand what he is saying that while he was physically cheating on her, he never emotionally cheated on her. Once again, it's definitely not suddenly okay, but I think he meant it when he said emotionally Lucy was the only woman for him. In spite of all of this, I truly believe Desi worked so hard on "I Love Lucy" because it was his love letter to Lucy and also his way to try to make up for everything else he was doing. It was his way to show her how much he loved her. The truth is in spite of Lucille Ball's genius, "I Love Lucy" would have been nothing without Desi. What he did behind the scenes in terms of business decisions, charming business partners, and revolutionizing the way TV is filmed was a huge part of the show's success. And Desi was also an amazing comedian. His ability to play the straight man is critical to the success of the show, and the few times he wasn't playing the straight man he did it brilliantly. I do sometimes wonder if the people around him had properly acknowledged his genius instead of treating him like the lucky guy who was riding along on the coattails of his famous wife if maybe he wouldn't have needed the drinking or the women as much. Also, having watched the moment where Lucille Ball was accused of being a Communist, the absolutely most convincing part of that speech was Desi talking about his own experience having to flee Communism when it came to Cuba. You could've heard a pin drop in that studio when he talked about that. I'm not trying to excuse Desi's behavior or even say that Lucille Ball made the wrong decision in divorcing Desi. But I am saying that I think sometimes history judges Desi too harshly and focuses on his flaws rather than his incredible work ethic and his comedic genius and business genius and his absolute devotion to his wife's career. Since Desi wasn't getting even close to the credit he deserved at the time, the only motivation I can think of for his work ethic was because it was his love letter to his wife and his apology for everything else he had put her through. The fact that Desi doesn't have much TV and movie work outside of working with Lucy after "I Love Lucy" also makes me think that. Don't get me wrong, Lucy proved that she was a formidable business woman, and after the divorce when she had to take over the studio she also made some incredibly brilliant decisions. She was also brilliant on the screen. And she gave Desi every possible chance in the world ever. However, from the accounts of most people who knew her she also wasn't easy to live with or work with, and I'm sure she also contributed in her own way to the couple needing to divorce. From all accounts, Lucy and Desi adored each other to the day they died, but they also found greater peace in their second marriages, and they worked much better as creative partners than as romantic partners. Obviously, the break down of the marriage is a tragedy, but I also think it's a tragedy that as we look back on everything that happened we spend so much time focusing on what went wrong instead of celebrating what that couple got right, and that especially goes for Desi who didn't do things by halves. He went about as wrong as you can go in the relationship without beating his wife to death or nearly to death, but he also went as right as someone could possibly go in terms of how hard he was working to protect and help his wife and her career. Whatever may have happened, there is clearly genuine affection on both sides, and while the marriage didn't last, what they created together has definitely lasted.

Both Vivian Vance and William Frawley had pet names for each other, and not in a good way. Frawley's pet name for Vance was "old sack of door knobs" and Vance's for Frawley was "old fat a**" Vance despised that her on screen husband was so much older and often stated that he should be playing her father, not her husband. When it was coming clear that I Love Lucy (then the Lucy/Desi Comedy Hour), Arnaz came to the duo and offered them a spin off show. Frawley, like his on screen counterpart, saw dollar signs and instantly agreed to do it. Vance, on the other hand, stated the she cannot do an entire series with that man and turned down the role. After learning of her dismissal, Frawley never spoke to Vance again unless work required it.

I love the episodes you highlighted here, but my all time fav episode is called "L.A. at Last!". Lucy is having lunch at The Brown Derby restaurant and realizes her favorite actor, William Holden, is sitting in the booth next to her...and then thru a series of hysterically zany antics, William Holden ends up in the Ricardo living room where he accidentally sets Lucy's fake nose on fire. I saw this episode for the first time about 55 years ago and thought Lucy was the funniest person in the whole world. I can still remember me and my siblings literally rolling around on the floor in front of the TV laughing our butts off. I miss those days.
