    Denial and Bipolar Disorder go hand-in-hand. To the dismay of my family and friends, I lived in stubborn denial for years. I'm sure many of you found this video because you have a loved one in denial. But what happens when someone you care about isn't even aware that they have Bipolar Disorder? I'm not just talking about someone denying their diagnosis... I mean their brain literally won't allow them to see the fact that they are mentally ill.
    Up to 40% - of people with Bipolar Disorder... (40 PERCENT) are living with a very intense condition known as “Anosognosia.” Some may call this the ULTIMATE form of “denial,” but it's actually not denial at all.
    I'll explain a LOT more in this video - from Polar Warriors...

    I'll be in a light version of denial for the rest of my life. I know I'm sick, I'm being treated, I'm taking pills, but there's always a crumb of doubt in me. My family is in denial, but I'm glad I got a diagnosis, so now I know why I behaved the way I did. Great video, thanks.

      After my diagnosis, I could recognize the depression but had a lot of trouble knowing when I was hypomanic. I mentioned this to four of my friends as we were driving out to dinner one night and told them I just don't know if I experienced hypomania. In unison, they all said, "Oh, yes, you DO!" and proceeded to give specific examples. Good friends! It really helped me to hear their comments!

    I'm so glad I don't have Anosognosia so I take meds regularly and can be treated properly. I have been diagnosed with Bipolar disorder for almost a year, although I have been ill for 20 years. I've noticed a significant improvement in my well-being recently, so I'm very happy and full of hope for a better life :D

      I have rapid cycling schizoaffective disorder so my meds are constantly changing. It makes it hard physically bc I get adjusted and then taken off. I'm glad I'm like you and are willing to understand I have a problem and work with what Dr's thinks is best.

    It was just confirmed that I am bipolar yesterday. It took a lot of research to realize that something was wrong with me, and that not everyone doesn't experience moods to the extremes that I do. But I'm finding it a lot more relieving to just be accepting of it and to own it instead of letting it weigh on me.

    Thank you very much for the informative video. Anosognosia, when present, makes treating bipolar disorder very challenging. My sister had bipolar disorder and anosognosia and repeatedly refused treatment over the years. We just couldn''t convince her to get help. She ended up taking her own life. It's so hard to think each day that her life might very well have been saved by medication that costs about $9 a month. Videos like yours help get the word out. This is very hard to write

    Thank you again for your research and all you do to help us with this disorder. I have never been in denial but I know some people who are and will share this. I knew I was 'different' than others when I was probably 10-11 years old but I functioned very well until I had a nervous breakdown at 49 and went for help because I couldn't sleep, and I mean for days on end. When I was younger I thought I was just a very emotional person and being a songwriter I thought that was normal. You have taught me things many doctors couldn't and I thank you because your help has kept me from failing into those long, dark deep depressions I used to experience until I found your channel a few years ago. I am a living testament to prove what you're doing really helps. How can I ever thank you enough?

    There's a good discussion on the neurological basis for anosognosia I just saw yesterday (ask a psychiatrist channel) which was a little hard for a layperson, so I'm really glad you're talking on this. It seems impossible to reason with. That other video did convince me that it's based in actual brain function and not a psychological defense but I 'll have to watch again to understand/remember it better. He talked about stroke patients and brain region signalling.

    I have bipolar disorder since I was 19 yo, but I never was on denial. When I was diagnosed and put on lithium I went on remission and had only an episode of mania twenty years later.
    Thanks very much for this information. I have never understood why other bipolar do not get on remission. Could you dedicate a video for those, like me, that went on remission and just went to the psiquiatrist just for blood test and responsibility? I was prevented that ir could be very easy to have new episodes but I was on therapy that helped me deal with everyday problems.

    Can dogs have issues, I think mine does. I found him abandoned. Took him in, and he has panic attacks sometimes from abuse. You guys do know that childhood trauma does play a large role in your mental illness. Sometimes pills need to be assisted with healthy human love.

    • @bubzilla6137
      @bubzilla6137 Год назад +3

      This is true. In fact, it's widely believed that trauma is a primary cause of bipolar. And I think that makes sense. Every single person I know or have met that has bipolar also had childhood trauma of some kind. In my case, it was 6 years of SA from 12 to 18 years old. I've since overcome all that but the bipolar is permanent, unfortunately. 🙂

    • @davinarasmussen
      @davinarasmussen 10 месяцев назад

      Bipolar disorder is a disruption of neurochemicals, absolutely not caused by trauma. Episodes after a trauma are commonly so severe, that they escalate to being diagnosed. Not BECAUSE of the trauma but because of the chemical shifts that occur in the brain. The milder symptoms early in bipolar, aren't usually as noticable... Or rather society accepts them: hypersexual behavior="player/slutty phase," Etc. But pyschotic mania is WAY more noticable and dangerous, and when that happens for the first time, there is a large chance of being diagnosed properly.

    Hi, so I know exactly what you are talking about. I went into fashion after doing some CBT because I thought that’s what I wanted but it turns out I tricked my brain into thinking that way because I just got used to the treatment. It was scary coming to terms that I had bipolar because I told myself I developed anhedonia after fashion but it was actually my brain telling me that it was hurting. Im starting to learn that there is such a thing as too much especially with bipolar. I shut my friends and family out because I want to believe I was normal. This illness is incredibly self destructive to the point where I got off my medication for a week and on the final day my brain gave out and I spiraled into psychosis I desperately tried the CBT technique on myself but it’s not safe at that stage. I eventually just had to feel all the things I forgot about due to the andognosia. It was like the whole world was screaming at me. I want to say thank you because thanks to your videos I was able to pull myself together with your meditations. It’s hard to find help when you tell yourself that you are normal.

    I have a hard time noticing I'm in a mood episode. And I will often deny that I am. It sounds ridiculous. And that can make it harder to get back on track.
    It's like a total lack of awareness. And often, I'm irritated because it feels like people just don't want me to do what I want to do.

    my partner was diagnosed by his gp wifh extreme anxiety and deprression around 4 yrs he was given an antidepressant that made his IBS act up and stopped it over a yr ago. now by watching your videos i know he was misdiagnosed. He's 55 and he has episodes around every 2.5 months. this time(now)is the first time he's actually been mean. before this I'd be ghosted for over a week. now he's just angry and vicious...he's amazing when he's normal however i never know when he'll go. he can't see he needs proper treatment. i walk constantly on eggshells. I need help.

    I California I cannot even get my son into a hospital for help unless he agrees to go in. The dangerous things he has told me don’t matter. It would require a terrible event and then he’d likely be put in jail.

    An issue I’m having with my partner, who has bipolar 1, is that he accepts his diagnosis and is not in denial about having bipolar. But he seems to be completely unaware of when he’s manic or that he might be going into mania. And then is in denial that it happened when he is out of mania. If I try to come to him and tell him that I see signs of mania or hypomania, he gets very angry with me and accuses me of using his illness against him. After episodes are over, unless I tell him how much he hurt me, he doesn’t seem to realize what happened and doesn’t seem to want to apologize for his bad behavior. It’s incredibly frustrating and I don’t know how to handle it anymore. It’s taking a huge toll on me and our marriage, which is another thing he seems to be unable to acknowledge.

    Can one have bipolar II if they don't react with mania/hypomania or increased irritability to SSRIs, haven't had psychotic episode, with the only thing being mood instability/ racing thoughts. If I had to call it, I'd say it's either cyclothymia, or ADHD, or maybe CPTSD, but obviously I can't truly evaluate myself objectively outside of just reading the same DSM checklist. Just curious of others relate.

    • @jean6061
      @jean6061 Год назад +2

      Bipolar is characterized by depressive episodes AND elevated mood episodes (mania in Bipolar I and hypomania in Bipolar 2). You don't need to have psychotic episodes to be diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder.

    • @avertingapathy3052
      @avertingapathy3052 Год назад

      Seems like bipolar I mania reaches into psychosis at times for people so it's a more clear predictor. Further SSRIs switch people into mania/hypomania. My point is that BP2 is often heavily depressive and hypomania is harder to spot that mania and rarer in general leading to many being undiagnosed for a while.

      I am a Christian also and being bipolar has felt like I failed yet as believers we need to remember that Jesus died on the cross for our sins. He died for our sins in the past, in the present, and whatever we will do in the future. We are a new creation when we repent and trust in Jesus for salvation. Our past doesn’t matter. 2 Corinthians 5:17
