A person does not have to medically transition in order to socially transition. But if you want to be recognized as trans, then there has to be some form of transition. And this person is not attempting to transition socially either. See, nonbinary people are trying to get society to recognize that sometimes people don’t fall into either box regarding gender and that not fitting into either box is ok. And they are right. But that’s nonbinary, not trans. Trans fit into the boxes just fine - they were just dropped into the wrong one, biologically speaking. But trans is an identity - we cannot tell this person that they are not trans. We don’t know. But this person also can’t expect society to respond to them as something that they don’t even try to present as. They present as gender non-conforming (which is a type of expression, not identity). So why are they being advertised as trans instead of what they clearly express themselves as? As a cis female, I often present myself in a feminine way, because it resonates best with my identity. But sometimes, I present more androgynous, just because I like the style. But that doesn’t change the fact that I identify as female - I also don’t expect people to view me as feminine when I don’t present that way. This person presents themself as non-conforming, but insists on being viewed as trans. That’s the problem - not that they don’t plan to biologically transition, but that they don’t even attempt to socially transition.

It doesn't. The definition of trans is that they believe in the binary nature of gender - they feel there are two genders and they are the opposite one to their biological sex. If you don't believe you're either gender then you're not trans by definition. You're kind of the opposite of trans. Trans people have way more in common with non-trans people who believe there are only two genders than they do with non-binary people. They are something else entirely. That's okay - it's just not trans. If they want people to accept that there is such a thing as a genderless human, or that there are hundreds of different genders, or gender doesn't exist, they are free to do that. They just shouldn't be calling themselves trans to do it.

Arianna I mostly agree with but firstly they are non binery not female and looking masculine has nothing to to with it many mtfs after transitioning still look masculine I agree the the determining factor for being trans is gender dysphoria I'm non binery and I have gender dysphoria and while there are many reasons to seek a medical transition to eliveate symptoms of dysphoria that's doesn't work for everyone I do think there are distinctions to be made when using the term trans* as it can mean transsexual (tho most people now use trangendered) to mean ftm mtf the the umbrella use of there term that includes all non binery genders as well as ftm and mtf so when speaking about being trans it's very important to make clear where one falls on the spectrum

Trans is generally used as an umbrella term to refer to people who don't identify with the gender they were assigned at birth and who want to be able to transition. Nonbinary is an umbrella term for people who identify outside of the binary male/female terms. Some nonbinary people do refer to themselves as trans because some nonbinary people want to transition. It can also be easier to just say you're trans because many people do not know what nonbinary is. However not all nonbinary people are trans, and not every trans person is nonbinary. Alok goes by them/them pronouns. They don't believe they are a woman because they describe themselves as nonbinary. So no they did not say they are a woman because they didn't if you have seen other videos Alok has done instead of the little snippets Blaire showed.

The term Nonbinary Transgender is a contradiction, because to be trans you have to have gender dysmorphia and see yourself as either a male or female.

However, there shouldn't be a value scale to validate or not validate trans experiences based on "who has had it worse." There is not one imitable trans experience, and it is about time that we (both queer and non-queer) acknowledge that there is more than one way for transness to manifest in trans people. I also believe that Alok identifies as a "trans gender non-conforming person", not a "trans woman" (like the women in this video). This would speak heavily to the differences in their identity development; for example, how Alok does not feel compelled to shave versus how these women have experienced different struggles (such as surgery). I think it’s important to allow a third gender category for expressing androgyny or non-conformity (androgyny being more subtle and non-conforming being more of a social statement). It creates a place for nonbinary identities to exist. But even if society did accept this third gender category, that’s where this person would be placed because they present as neither male nor female (but rather some combination of the two). Still not trans. Maybe they identify as trans - born male, identifies female, but society responds to how you present (which is why most of us prefer to present in a way that matches our identity). And this person presents as this third category - not male, not female, not trans.

I know it's an old video, but thank you so much! I'm not trans, but I've dated a pre-op FTM trans guy for a while. I've seen how much effort he puts in - daily (bondage, hormones). He was saving for an operation (first of many) at that time and now, after almost 10 years, he's finally himself. It was a long journey and though we're just friends now, I'm very happy for him, because now he can actually look into the mirror without a panic attack. On one hand - dressing as you like is awesome, but speaking for all trans people without an actual trans experience is not the most sincere thing to do.

Some people can’t or won’t do physical changes for their transition, including hormones. And that’s fine. But you still have to present as female - and throwing a dress on that does nothing to make your figure more feminine while refusing to shave does not count as presenting as female. It takes more than that. That being said, there is nothing wrong with the way this person presents - they’re gender non-conforming. That’s fine. But the media portrays them as a typical trans person, when non-conforming trans people actually are not that common (because we usually want to be treated in a way that matches how we identify, so we present in a way that’s consistent with our identity - which this person is doing if they are nonbinary and not doing if they are trans).
