There is a time and place for technology as a tool, not as a continuous escape from the gift of trying to make something, having a setback and having to adapt. One perfected skill does not make any expert. Good that you to recognize the many other skills needed.
As a fellow Petersen, I have lived much of what you speak. As a self taught sailor I designed and built a 18' catamaran sailboat right after high school (modeled after a picture of a 20' Tornado Cat). At the same time I taught myself to play jazz guitar, and started building custom jazz guitars. I became a University professor of Art specializing in portraiture. Later in life I taught myself to play jazz piano and designed and built custom baby grand housings for digital piano's. A life well lived.
This is indeed true. If boats are your passion, they are indeed a lot of work. Most owners welcome volunteers as crew and as help when on the hard. Do not get to intimidated of 250.000 Euro / Dollar price tag's. I learned by volunteering and 10 years later I bought a boat that had a lot of issues for 10k. I am now living onboard for 7 years. Do not get distracted by the people claiming "There is nothing so expensive as a cheap boat". That is only true for the stupid and helpless that need a professional for everything. If you have one skill set that is in high demand, you can trade it for the skills you lack. I am good at electrics, and a mate can do welding. Bartering that way is big in boating. If you can afford to by a secondhand car, you can afford a boat that you can do up over a couple of years. Not for the lazy though....
Nice video! Hearing your story was a massive motivational boost. I am probably 20% towards making my dreams reality but i know i can do it somehow! I have got the career needed to earn enough money, built a modest house and have found a set of boat plans i like. In two days i will be inspecting a site to see it's suitability to build the dream. I am 30 but i still have youthful energy and dreams. I have no idea on how i will finish these dreams yet but it helps to take every day one at a time
Good stuff, I hope it inspires people and especially the young. I’m happy that I never bullied people and glad it worked out for you. Sounds like you have had many adventures in your time. Peace
i grew up that sailing was only for rich people and you had to have above intelligence because sailing was promoted as a gentrified sport . i soon found out this is not the case . The problem with children today is their mothers saving them from everything.. adversity builds courage and strength and humanity
@@nealpetersen-nobarriers9694 yea please. adversity as in no $ to feed oneself and work that is physical. trying to keep a boat going and feeding one’s dog . to be honest i’m nearly done with this crazy world. 60 now seen everything i need to see .
Well said, I hope many young people see this. I am onboard Lazy Lightning II after rebuilding the mast. I trust you are well. Jamie McPoland Long Beach, CA

sometime I will do a video more on adversity and how it can shape us. Thanks for that focus.

Well spotted . It looks like a baby manta ray?🤗...correction , maybe Eagle ray ?
It pays off being nice to your environment.😂😂😂 Now if I can get the big ray and the manatee to do a cameo next.😊
