    I return to Project Old Grey, a journey to fix my dad's old 2002 #Chevy #Silverado. Today we work on part one of the rear brakes project. There was a heck of a grind going on back there, so my plan was to change the rear brake pads and rotors. I also planned to check out the parking brake while I was back there, because that wasn't working, and I wanted it working as a backup in case the brakes fail again.     More about asbestos risk while changing brakes here: www.epa.gov/asbestos/current-.... Asbestos exposure is very bad. It killed Steve McQueen, for example. While the risk of being exposed to it while changing brakes is minor "in theory," it's still possible. Fear of that is legitimate and nothing to be ashamed of. If that's the case for you, please have no shame and take your brake change projects to a mechanic instead. Whatever works!

    There should be something when a car/truck is built that says.."going to the Rust Belt" and then every thing with a thread on it under the body is installed with anti-seize. I know manufacturers don't care as long as the vehicle makes it past it's Warranty...but really.

    VERY SMART to use the wheel as a jack stand wedge after it's removed from the truck! I've been doing that for decades!!

    Good job. Snapped mine off too. I already figured an extractor wasnt going to be worth trying. Im installing new 2 piece dust shields so I removed that back mounting with the four 18mm bolts. That may enable me to tap a new hole without removing a stud. Im also questioning the need for that retaining clip. The old ones on both sides were completly rusted off, probably for years, with no apparent problems.
    Edit: Found I couldn't reach the screwhole with standard bits and didnt have any longer ones, so I decided to remove a stud like you did. Worked great, especially with the back plate unbolted. I was able to clamp it right up against the back of the wheel plate with the stud hole directly over the broken bolt hole. I wasn't sure what size hole to tap but after trying some known bolt sizes I decided that it was a 10-32. I used a 5/32 drill bit to drill into the broken off screw and came out the other side. I then used a 10-32 tap. The spring clip screw was a bit snug at first so I'm not sure 10-32 was the exact fit (likely metric) but it snugged up fine. Thanks for the stud removal idea, I'm not sure😂 that would've ever occurred to me.

    Thank you for this video and trying different stuff. And thanks for all the comments. The comment about both sides being rusted out and never had a problem is interesting, Because the parking break will still work, Maybe I'll just turn the other way and make believe it never happened. LOL just kidding but I will fix it. Also like the comment about the spot weld within 5 minutes. Great community on RUclips.

    Last one I did, I just tack welded it on rather than trying to replace/use a screw lol. went from a headache to a 5min

    Great video! Next time try a lug nut with a few turns in the stud and hit THAT. it’ll stay in place and you won’t hurt the threads. Thanks for making these. Some things I know and some I don’t. More than 1 way to skin a cat and I appreciate you taking your time to educate and entertain

      After not having any luck with the the 2x4, I considered the lug nut trick but was concerned that it might damage the threads. I went with a flat nose cold chisel and the stud popped right out. To prevent the chisel from possibly slipping off I screwed a lug nut on just the end of the stud.

    Why don’t u use wd40 or pb blaster, spray, let it sit for 15-20 min an then rusty bolts 8 times outta 10 will come right loose.

      Totally agree on the PB Blaster! I was using it here but the problem with that little screw was that it was a through hole, and it was rusted in the back. Had I known that, I would have cleared that rust away back there and maybe prevented the snapping. Oh well, next time…

      I've never had good luck with either but I always give it a try first. You even have to be careful tightening them or theyll snap off. Those small screws are ridiculously fragile as are brake caliber bleeder screws.
