    Installing a dashcam can seem rather daunting, but it's actually a relatively straight forward DIY project if you take your time.
    Modern cars, especially European cars have features which monitor battery load when the car is off and can either cut power, or throw error messages when a dashcam is hard wired in parking mode, in this video I'll show you how to work around this.
    You'll also learn how to conceal all the wiring neatly so nothing is visible inside the cabin.

    Stumbled across this video after searching the forums about a battery warning coming up on my f21 m135i. I had my viofo duo wired up with 2 piggy back fuses rather than a permenant live taken from the battery with an Inline fuse and one piggy back fuse. This has saved me so much money as I was about to buy a new battery and get it coded etc. As soon as I swapped it over to the way you showed on here the warning disappeared and all functions returned to the car. Thanks man! If you lived in the UK I'd buy you a beer 👍

    Mate!! Brilliant brilliant brilliant video, I cannot say it enough, brilliant! Nothing like watching a thorough start to finish install! Awesome work!
    Wish I came across this the other day, while installing a BlackVue in my BMW 320d (2011 E90). While not an exact fit for my requirements this video gave me some great ideas in preparing to install the rear cam. I spent almost 24hrs trying to get my front cam to work with Power Magic Pro while trying to wire into fuse box... not being an electrician and trying to understand the Egyptian hieroglyphics picto/graph of the fuse box BMW provide with the car is no help in finding a fuse with permanent (battery) power and accessory power needed to wire in a PMP. Had to get a tech from BMW to tell me what was what by getting them to read their own electrical diagram, 24hrs later, success!
    Will put my own video up of my wiring into fuse box once fully installed and completed, but just wanted to say great work.

    An extra thing you can do to stop the cable coming back out of the head liner; put a couple zip ties on the cable, trim them and wrap them in electrical tape, then put it in the head liner; stops the cable coming back out with the movement of the car. Thanks for all the info on where to chase the cable in a bmw.

    I just want to quickly address a point that has been raised a few times in the forums regarding my wiring in the A-Pillars. As you can see in the video below, the A-Pillars in the 2 Series do not detatch when the Air bags deploy. The air bags sit further back in this car, meaning the wiring method I used in this video does not itnerfere with the airbags.
    You can see exactly how it works in this particular car here: ruclips.net/video/hbD_l-AJOlg/видео.html
    PLEASE check your car specifically before copying my method. other cars have the side curtain in the A-Pillar, and on these cars you will need to make sure you run the wiring BEHIND the airbag to avoid interference.

    I wonder when car manufacturers will provide a power connection to the mirror or other proximate position to where the camera is mounted? Perhaps also a connection for the rear window also. Either that or they start incorporating a dash cam into the car 🚗
    Great video btw 👍🏻 best I’ve seen.

    Very good video explaining in detail. Will be installing tomorrow in a BMW M4 which will be a tad more difficult to reach the hatch with the wiring. I am a bit surprised when you go through extensive lengths to hide the wiring perfectly, you then run the two wires from the front dash directly up to the sill. Would be better to make a clip on the dashcam to run them horizontal towards the mirror base, then up behind the black window tint in the corner of said base to the sill?
    Will try the floor route instead of the roof route, good idea!

    Hi, I finally fitted my camera. I couldn't tuck the cable into the gap above the A pillar to allow the cable to run down the weather strip so I asked an auto electrician what to do . He pulled the A pillar trim off and tucked the cable inside that. The other thing I couldn't get my head around was the wire tap orientation. I think what you mean is that, if the orientation is wrong then the tap wire is not protected by the built in fuse, not that it doesn't get any power. The fact that you have wired an additional fuse into the tap then the orientation would not be a problem. BTW I wouldn't have been able to do it so neatly had you not posted the video, Thanks

    • @boostedmedia
      @boostedmedia  6 лет назад

      Hi David. You’re exactly right. If the orientation is wrong then the wire tap is not protected by the fuse in the fuse block. Which means there is a possibility of an unprotected short between the fuse block and where the fuse cartridge is. Given the whole body of the car is ground, the risk of shorts is very high which is why the fuse should always be as close to the power source as possible.
      Glad the video helped!

    Great install! I had a professional do a similar installation method to this with a blackvue and power magic pro. My one concern, though, is could there be a problem with the constant power wire not being fused? I Guess the only thing that would be at risk is the dash cam and the dash cam wiring harness. He did say that the power magic pro has a fuse inside of it, but I can’t find any confirmation of that. (Please excuse me if none of what I said makes sense - I’m completely clueless with electrical stuff)

    This is an awesome video. After researching on the internet for installation tips on installing the Thinkware 770 to a BMW (F30) to be exact, this is the only video that I've seen with a complete install demonstrated. After watching this, I decided that I could definitely install this cam myself and I've bought all the kit necessary to complete the job.
    I've got two question though, after spending just under £300 on everything, I kept reading that the Thinkware 770 will cause a battery error message approximately on a daily basis. Do you concur with this...?
    And, can you divulge your setup with your F20? such as camera cut off time and when the camera should cutt off if the battery voltage drops below a specified amount?
    I plan on using the Thinkware whilst driving and for only around 6 or so hours after I have parked(switched off) my F30, and obviously the G-Sensor enabled for recording impacts, I'm just puzzled on why the BMW community are all experiencing battery error messages.
    Thank you in advance Sir.

    • @boostedmedia
      @boostedmedia  6 лет назад +5

      Hi mate,
      I haven’t had a single battery error or problem and my car sits for weeks at a time in the garage.
      I set my camera to run in parking mode until the battery drops to 12.2V.
      12V is the point where things start getting upset.
      The key is to make sure you wire it the same way as me with the always on power directly to the battery. If you wire it in after the battery control module you’ll get battery drain errors as it’s detected as a parasitic load.
      Good luck and thanks for the feedback. I’m glad you found the video useful.

    • @Dubb1000
      @Dubb1000 6 лет назад +3

      Really appreciate the quick reply. Your explanation makes sense as connecting the continuous power supply directly to the battery would bypass any battery error sensor messages. Thank you so much once again.
      One last thing, I'm not sure if it's too late, but, I think that you should include Thinkware 770 in the title of your video, as it would seem that there are tonnes of BMW users who are looking for advice/instructions on successfully installing this specific dash cam to their F series. I will definitely be sharing this in the Bimmerpost Forum.

    • @boostedmedia
      @boostedmedia  6 лет назад +2

      Thanks mate. The details of the dashcam are included in the tags and description so it shows up on searches. Didn’t put it in the title because I didn’t want people who have different cameras thinking it’s not relevant.
      Shares are always greatly appreciated, thank you!!

    I am so thankful to have found and watched your video, very educative. Just bought a Dash cam for my 2018 M3 F80 but the hardwire kit that came with it is only 11ft long. Now I know what I can do to extend without any issues. I do have one question, as my hardwire kit only as the red and black wire, that’s won’t be an issue right? I can still follow the same process as you did (minus the yellow wire)?

    Any idea why my dashcam (DDPAI) goes into parking mode but stops recording abruptly after a few hours? Mine is installed with the VCC connected directly to the battery like yours to avoid the BMW battery management system and avoid any error codes/power cut outs. It is definitely not switching itself off to protect the car's battery voltage, as the car battery voltage is higher than the lower voltage limit set in the app.
    Comparing to your installation, the only two differences are 1. the earthing point, and 2. the fuse I tapped into for the ACC (but I can confirm it is switching to 0V when the car is off and locked).
    Car is 2016 BMW 118i F20 Series 1.
    Thanks !

    Hi guy,
    And thank you for this very interesting video.
    Do you know where is the radio fuse in a BMW Serie 3 F30 ?
    Because on this model there is two places (even 3) for fuses : one in the trunk and one in the engine compartment (and a last one next to the glove box)
    On the other hand on this model, the battery is in the trunck as well, but if the radio fuse is in the engine compartement, it will more complicate to wire.
    Except if another fuse can be used, and in this case what kind of fuse can I use ?

    Great video BoostedMedia! I have a problem with mine. Right now it works perfectly when the ignition is turned on, however when the car is off the parking mode never comes on. I have activated this in the App, I have tried disabling battery protection and still nothing. I thought that I might have wired it wrong (incorrectly joined wires), however when I test the end (silver connector) that goes into the front camera the multimeter is reading over 12v so there is power coming to it. I have a 2016 BMW 328 and I used the same fuse you did in the video. Any suggestions?

    I have a 218d Active Tourer, so this video doesn't apply - ie the fusebox is behind the (left hand sided in my case here in the UK) glovebox, and there's no nearby ground connection plus the battery's not close to it, so it's not that straightforward. I also don't have an ACC fuse in the box. So I could do with some specific assistance to exactly the same vehicle model if possible, which would be very gratefully received. Oh, and by the way, I want to use my THIeye Series 2 dashcam with its parking monitoring enabled.

    Why not run both wires together on the same side of the car and split them in the rear behind the rear seat, one goes up to the rear cam and one down to the fuse box and battery?

    • @boostedmedia
      @boostedmedia  6 лет назад

      Good question. A few reasons.
      1. I always try to avoid running long signal and power wires together to avoid interference, although his may be silly in this case as the rear camera is also powered via its cable.
      2. Because running both wires together caused the trim to bulge a bit around the windscreen area.

    Could it be a good idea to place your rear facing camera on the cover of the rear brakelight? I mean, in case you have tint on the rear window and don't want to risk it coming off if you want to remove the camera permanently?

    • @boostedmedia
      @boostedmedia  6 лет назад

      I always find its best to put the camera lens as close as possible to the glass to reduce glare and reflections. Plus the camera sits quite a bit lower and obstructs the view out of the rear vision mirror more of you stick it on the brake light cover. Also the double sided tape doesn’t stick to the plastic as well as it does the glass.
      Up to you though. You’re unlikely to damage your tint if you use fishing wire to remove the camera and then clean up the residue with alcohol.

      I got about 2 hours of continuous recording out of 16GB. It records over itself once you run out of storage, but it stores things it detects as events seperately so you don't lose them.

  • @GOKHANDILEK

    You don't need to run wires to the battery to power the 12vTO5v adapter... You can just tap into the existing fuse box just like how you tapped into get the ACC 12V. Just make sure you find a constant 12V power supply in one of the fuses like power windows . It is a lot cleaner and quicker that way.

    • @boostedmedia
      @boostedmedia  5 лет назад +1

      Nope. Has the be tapped in to constant power BEFORE the control module (which is between the battery and fuse box) or you get parasitic load errors.

      @@boostedmedia Thanks for pointing that out. Totally forgot the control box. Interesting. That control box must be pretty picky to see if there is any load other than original load.

    I'm guessing that BMW has an Air Bag Curtain on the "A" Pillar, so you should run the wire down against the windshield and not by the door opening. The way you ran the wire in the video, If the Air Bag is deployed, the wire will get caught in the Air Bag, potentially interfering with it, which could result in personal injury.
    The best thing to do is find out how the trim is attached and remove it so you can be assured that the wire is not going to interfere with the Air Bag. I know you are trying to avoid removing trim, but sometimes it is very important to remove the trim so you know exactly what could be affected if the wire is just randomly ran where Air Bags may be present.

    • @boostedmedia
      @boostedmedia  5 лет назад +1

      I’m pretty sure I explained that in the video. The curtain airbag sits a little further back than the cable sits. But yes absolutely necessary to check!

    • @donaldgarretson5007
      @donaldgarretson5007 5 лет назад +1

      I might have missed you saying it.
      I just was pointing it out since in the video at 7 minutes you ran the wire across the top of the "A" pillar from the windshield to the door opening, crossing over the airbag.

    • @WodenWestonUNPL
      @WodenWestonUNPL 5 лет назад +1

      Overall a very informative video. Thanks.
      In my X1 the curtain airbag does continue down the 'A' pillar of the windscreen. I discovered that part way through the install. If installed as per the video the cable would cross the airbag. I ran the cable down the windscreen side.
      I saw a couple of other videos where the cover is removed from the pillar. The cable is then easily run down to the dash. I didn't attempt that because I also found where other people have triggered the airbag when they removed the cover!

      after loads of RUclips Dash Cam vids I decided on the F770 and started watching loads of install..... some folks have mentioned that the Dash Cam wiring can cause interference with both FM and DAB radio reception...... again not that we have much DAB radio here in Ireland.

    • @sutiar

      Not sure if this applies to 2series, but for the F20 1series, the DAB is on the top of the rear window hence locating the rearview camera at the base of the window will not cause interference. More info see ruclips.net/video/xll2I52UB8k/видео.html

    Good vid but you should invest in some plastic panel tools rather than using a screwdriver (could damage the panel with one slip and/or damage the cable) or your fingers to hide the wire within the trim. $3 on eBay. One of the best investments I've made. Cheers.

    Sorry, but there are so many wrong things with this install.
    1. Don't connect the positive wire straight to the battery. Use a constant fuse instead.
    2. It's better to tuck the wire through the headliner route and not down. You've mentioned you don't want to cause rattles yet you go through 10 panels instead of just using the headliner.
    3. Using the radio for accessory on the M235 or any BMW is bad. The radio stays on even when the car is off for about 15 minutes.
    4. What you said about the camera placement under the mirror is wrong. The "sensors" are merely a camera which sits close to the windshield, you can't block it with the dashcam even if you try hard.
